    I bought one 3 years ago at a goodwill store for $20. I replaced the carburetor and it ran great for a while, but now the old 675 eager1 is tired and wearing out. It will still start and run but knocks at start up and puffs white smoke...still the best 20 I ever spent. I have a Honda, hopefully the swap will work for me too.

    I have a old snapper, smokes some but not a lot anyways I like the older fuel lines, because most of them that I have seen have a fuel turn on and shutoff switch and when you turn it on, just wait a few minutes and it primes it self which is so much better than having to go down and crouch then having to push it a lot

    He is working on a model 917.773706 shown on the sticker, at 6.0hp The 917.773742 is a 675 series motor but I think it takes the same carb. The 6.75hp is a good machine.

    Good rule of thumb is check compression first, put two ounces of 1/2 naptha and 1/2 diesel to full gas tank will increase engine life ....

    rebuild with new rings if the bore is sound, it's almost like a new motor anyway.
    I've rebuilt many a briggs motor this way without problems.

    I have one of those with a "beaver blade" on it, which I use to knock down about a 1/2 acre's worth of saplings.

      They are a hell of a machine perfect for stuff like that and all the thick weeds at my dads. He's been really happy with the one I put that Honda on. A lot of that stuff is just too much for a normal weed whacker

      Easton Ford i didnt either. On the manifold where the gas goes from the carb to the engine take those bolts out and just remove carb attached to that manifold pipe
      Also there are to bolts kinda above the carb take those off
      Then you have 2 gas lines and a linkage hook thing that goes from throttle to governor and i don’t know how it goes back on so I’m stuck at the moment

      @hanksgarage_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Other than a dirty carb I can’t really think of anything else that may be causing that. Other than maybe the governor? Not sure. Does it bog down? They are only supposed to run at that same speed

    How do you change the fuel tank on this trimmer?

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like you would any lawnmower with this engine on it to be honest. Pop off that center recoil plastic screen. Remove the 3 5/16 bolts on top of the tank securing it to the recoil assembly. Then remove the 7/16” or 1/2” bolt which secures it to the side of the block. Remove the fuel line and it comes right off the engine.

    I have a question, mine won't stop running when i move the lever to stop, any reasons why?

    • @markmurto
      @markmurto ปีที่แล้ว

      The lever has to be pushed past a click point to stop. Push it a little harder down past sliw, it will make a click sound and go to the stop position. That's on mine, push past slow, sounds like you broke it but you didn't.

  • @marvinjones5505
    @marvinjones5505 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How can you tell if the shaft is broken

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The motor freewheels with not compression felt at all. The Shafts themselves rarely break, its either the flywheel key that will fail or the connecting rod will let go.

  • @PhildWithMalice
    @PhildWithMalice 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's a shame that the motor is really gone. It should have many years left. You could hone the cylinder and put new rings on it, but why? It's one of millions and easily replaced with much less effort. I try to explain that to my customers that it's cheaper to put a used runner on it rather than fix what you have, but many would rather waste the money on "their" engine that they've abused.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya I haven't come across people like that just yet, I'm sure I would though if I had my own shop like you probably do. We are in total agreement though. I'd love to tear into them like that if it was worth it but it sadly isn't. Thanks for the comment man cheers

    Why would u not change the oil real quick? Shame to clean the carb and test the rings but not complete the 3rd gem

    • @andybub45
      @andybub45 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the rings are shot. Unless the owner paid him more money, it would be foolish for you to put oil into something that wont last much longer

    I know this is an old video, but so far, can't find this model in any other videos. Would have been nice to cover what you referred to as a governor. THAT is my issue, and I decided not to take small engine repair in high school, so why it's loose/slack, I don't know unless someone else covered that in a video IF I can find this model darnit.

      Just look up how to adjust Briggs quantum governor on TH-cam

    • @danoakes4071

      I used to bend the governor actuator arm to increase or decrease the speed, but I'm not sure about this model if you can do that.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea they are fairly common here we get a lot of brush that normal weedeaters won't get all that well so they do sell them at most stores

    • @mikespain8655
      @mikespain8655 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      These things are worthless. This style I mean. A good string trimmer with someone who knows how to run it is much better. They lack power, not very maneuverable, and slow.

    • @BRWfilms
      @BRWfilms 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mike Spain they arnt worthless. This is way more heavy duty than the handheld ones

      Where is "down here"?
      I have a sythe with a zarph handle and 36 inch hook blade, really mean, but I have the weeder too because it gets tight places. Don't like hitting my blade on the fence posts. Also have a string trimmer, but "up here" we have big weeds and these wheeled trimmers use big line. Also you don't get all splattered like a string trimmer does you.

    • @hanksgarage_

    • @ryanravencaller
      @ryanravencaller 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh man, bad enough i'm getting a 3 year old craftsman lawnmower that my grandpa used used oil from his car in before he passed, In his estate the property is being sold but after the closing i am getting the craftsman mower which i believe needs a selfpropel cable, and it smoked when i started it, which i am hoping isnt worn out rings in the engine already :/ that poor lawnmower has seen a lot of abuse i am really hoping i can save it

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mitchell WildFlame ya worth trying some straight 30 oil and seeing what happens. A lot of people make that mistake of putting regular car oil in some can handle it like Hondas gcv motors but these older Briggs and Tecumsehs were just not designed to work with it. Hope it works out for ya though

    • @ryanravencaller
      @ryanravencaller 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really so do too because I just replaced the brake and bag control cable on my other craftsman to find out when I changed the oil with the proper stuff that it is too late, it runs but smells like burnt oil

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup when I'm at that point I was with this then I do the compression test to determine what's going on. They should get some more use out of it until it quits
