At nearly 66 I’m old enough to remember and have worked on carburetors having copper floats with soldered seams that occasionally developed pin hole leaks allowing the float to fill with gas causing the float to always be fully or near fully down and the carbs overflowed when not in use and sometimes when I use. Also, old enough to remember when water in your gas, (not varnish fallout) due to water in leakage into leaky underground fuel tanks(now all remove/replaced) or tanks having too much water in them which some water in them was intended to serve as something of a catch and fall out buffer material to hold debris that was introduced into the tank below the tank pump’s suction point and it was water that was the most likely cause of problems with gasoline, especially in the early to mid 70’s when smaller 4 cylinder engines were being introduced in large numbers and it didn’t take much water to saturate the in line paper filter media really restricting fuel flow and eventually water would get into the carb bowl and play havoc in the carb jet’s metering of fuel making your already marginally powered 4 cylinder engine run more like a one or two cylinder engine. Gas back then had lead added for its pre detonation antiknock properties, raising the octane and compression influenced detonation point to eliminate or at least reduce pre-detonation. Lead also had a lubricating quality on engine upper cylinder components specifically the valve train. . Gas was considerably more stable back then and retained its octane better but due the health hazards of lead and the increased amounts of leaded fuel being consumed/burned in autos and all gas engines by then many of which were old, in poor condition and ran poorly causing extra pollution resulting in lead being banned as a fuel additive(antiknock pre-detonation qualities) to reduce overall negative health affects if lead and it was replaced with Butane(to raise octane) and other additives. Ah yes, the good old days when corn was used for eating, fillers for foods, makeup, feeding cattle and other farm critters, making moonshine and/or burned in highly efficient corn pellet shop and home heaters via an internal auger and small but high temperature combustion chamber. But, corn soon became far too expensive for anything or anyones use but making ethanol to add to automobile gas fuel to supposedly help clean engine combustion chamber to reduce emissions. But, that’s only IF you don’t consider the emissions related to getting the corn planted, making the high nitrogen based fertilizers corn needs, harvesting, transporting and refining corn into ethanol. I think I saw where the US on average created 20% more carbon based fuel emissions by growing corn and turning it into ethanol for a gas additive which lowers the overall energy in gas via dilution. Oh well, smarter by their definition(much richer and MORE controlling people than me) forced this move on the American public and many were lobbyists and legislators that really weren’t bothered by true details just the kickback and skid greasing of their careers.

I love seeing your kids out there with you. Both of my sons are full-grown men now and they would come out to the garage to watch me work on something. Since I'm like yourself I always have something around here that I have picked up that needs work. I will set my boys up with their own tools and a corner in the garage and let them take things apart. I would check on them and if they were going something wrong I would correct them.
My oldest one liked it so much working with his hands right out of high school he joined the Marine corps and now is a aircraft mechanic or maintenance at some fancy title. My youngest followed his big brothers would pass into the Marine corps but his career choice went in another direction. But most of them both know what it takes to get something working again.

Cheer up James and give that youngster a hug. I have this engine on a Toro mower. I just put a new fuel hose on it after 20 years. It takes more like 6 pumps on the bulb but it starts first pull.
I've been trying to find another one like that. I had one 2 years ago and it got crushed during a storm and never could find one. I also used to clean carburetors by boiling them in half water and half lemon juice before i got my ultrasonic cleaner
What cleaner do you use in your ultrasonic?

I have the exact same trimmer I got off a customer that wanted a spring tune up, I discovered it had no compression. The customer didn't want to pay for the troubleshooting, so I gave him $25.00 for salvage parts. Long story short, it had sucked up some paper(no idea where) and the paper was suck in the exhaust valve! After I remove the paper, did a quick valve lap job, put it back together, double checked the compression, which was over 90psi. Then I discovered the carb was so gross and corroded , got a cheap replacement off Amazon. Both idler pulleys and the three bearings in the trimmer head were noisy, so I replace them. In the end, I spent $65.00 to get it running and couple of hours of work. Since I run the mow team at my church, I just loaned/donated it to the church for the mowing season here in Texas. It has done a great job killing thick weeds.
It is a nice machine for that stuff a lawn mower cannot do. Glad to hear you where able to save it. Well worth the $65 dollars.

May I say this.
I watched the carb gas bow in ultraviolet bath placed up right. With the wave coming from bath bed not much agitation can we get inside the bow. Unless we want to clean bow skin. Your advice?
I cleaned it with de-greaser and rinsed with water blowed dry wish i could of seen the torque setting like you do know I thought I lost the intake gasket. working off the tailgate of the truck in the dark
I find this type of mower unwieldy and cutting width and quality of the cut itself to be more than subpar.
Can you please tell the what the top cap cover is called for the air filter and carburetor? It's the top piece fastened onto the air filter. I have this engine bought a push trimmer second hand but quite a few parts missing so ordered it on ebay. Thanks

It's actually fairly common on those machines I have for them and also push mower with that setup on it and all the things you ever have to worry about is if you tear up that gasket with all the holes in it on the back of the primer bulb housing
