    The built-in NOAA feature is accessed by holding down the key. There is a slight flaw in the radio's NOAA feature. If your VFO is currently in AM mode, it will retain AM mode when you enter into NOAA mode. It's not a fatal flaw. Just make sure to always have the VFO set to FM mode before accessing the built-in NOAA feature via key .

    The software/firmware could give the side button, a second option. Press, OR, long press. Then I could adjust FM Radio on single press, and SCAN on long press - for example.. These are the two functions I like/need it most. You are a good teacher pal. 73 de PY2UTU

    You have to be moving laterally (i.e. walking, driving, flying, canoing, shuffling a two step, whatever) for the compass to begin working.
    This is because the GPS computer needs to receive at least two different location coordinates from the satellite to determine a compass orientation. This is typical of all GPS units that have a compass display.

    I ordered one of these units based on your video and man I am blown away to the quality of a $38 radio. I have been testing the TX audio quality over several nodes and nets and the UV17pro GPS is by far the winner over my other radios, ID-5100, TM400, TM7250, Leixen 898, ID-51, and YTY 380. It would really be interesting to see a review comparing a UV17's TX audio with that of a BTech 25x2. I for one am looking for a mobile radio that has the same quality of audio as the UV17 for under $125. 73, Steve WB4IZC

    Does anyone have the same problem as me, in the user manual it says that Power On Display can be a Message, Picture (Logo) or Voltage... Unfortunately, I only have Voltage and Picture but picture cannot be inserted into the device, it starts upload but in the end it fails... How to solve this problem?
    And how can the Power On Voltage be displayed a little longer, it turns off too quickly, I can't see how many volts the battery is.....

    I've been considering the uv17 pro, but now questioning that. 1) the euro plug and adapter. 2) miss spellings in the menus. Its the little things that I dont like like that. Yes, it's a $30 Chinese radio. Your's isnt the first review I've seen with these "mistakes" so i know yours isn't a one-time miss shipment. Thanks for the good review and i am still considering this radio. Just need to do a little more of my own research. Ps. I'm in central Oklahoma also.

    I can’t seem to figure out how to “dual monitor”. What I mean is, if channel A is scanning and channel B is transmitting it will not come through. It’s essentially not receiving in one channel while scanning the other.

    • @HamRadioCrusader

    Good video, I was looking for the GPS functions. A couple of things I've noticed 1) in GPS mode the 20 menus other than "my place" says NEVER GET POS, maybe for the chineese satilites? That word in chinese is "MEMBER" For what its worth. 2) I noticed that when your are in the GPS mode, and you key up (PTT) it automatically sends an incoded burst, I'm assuming the GPS information over the air. I can hear it with another radio, I think if I had another GPS model it would decode it, so I'm still looking for some literature on the GPS feature.

    • @paullockyer5079

      I'm struggling with the GPS which comes into play with 2 or more Radios.
      I've bought 2- a black and an Orange one.
      Menu ANI Edit matches the 1-20 GPS options (if you add 100) 101=1, 102=2..........120=20
      ANI Edit also shows in Menu 6 Radio Info eg Radio:101
      I could number them on the radio itself but could only name them when linked to my computer. Menu-> Window-> DTMF
      No.1 Code 101 Name was Contact 1 and I renamed BLACK
      No.2 Code 102 Name was Contact 2 and I renamed ORANGE
      Now Black radio in GPS mode has My Place GPS Co-ordinates replicated in position (up arrow) 01.Black and appears as 01.Black(Host)
      Orange Radio in GPS mode has My Place GPS Co-ordinates replicated in position (up arrow twice) 02.Orange and appears as 02.Orange(Host)
      The GPS compass mode will show the relative positions of each radio
      But, but but When I press the PTT key Red & Green (Transmit/Receive) LED come on both radios but neither Radio receives & displays the other's GPS co-ordinates
      Richard noticed that your PTT press sends a burst. Mine merely a Beep
      Any help would be greatly appreciated

    • @mattradcliffe9279
      @mattradcliffe9279 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Each of those twenty is another radio that it can “track”. Get the radios together as a group and number them as a group and then you can keep track of everyone through those encoded bursts. I haven’t played with it yet(only have one) but that’s what I understand from others.

    • @paullockyer5079
      @paullockyer5079 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes if you change the ANI-Edit (Menu 3, Radio Setting; sub-menu 19, ANI-Edit) by typing a number from 101-120 and hitting OK(menu button) That number relates to the GPS screens 01= ANI 101, 07=ANI 107, 12 = ANI 112 etc
      Menu 6 -Radio Info also shows the Radio ID (ANI number)
      This is done above on the Radio itself. It can also be done using computer software by opening the DTMF window and changing the Radio ID at the bottom of the 20 DTMF channels.
      On the software for the non GPS UV-17 the DTMF window also lists the 20 channels and the Radio ID is referred to as ANI ID.
      Do you know how ANI/Radio ID's are used for non GPS radios? I don't but would like to know

    Has anyone actually run one of these across a bench? I have two and found them to be inferior performers to an original UV-5R. The receivers aren't as sensitive on VHF. Power output is about the same. But the big difference is on UHF. The radios only put out a little over two watts compared to the UV-5R's 4 watts. The sensitivity is also considerably down from the older radios and even the VHF on the same radio. I tested both of the radios I have and they perform Identical. I first found this trying different antennas. The 3 UV-5Rs I have all were picking up a repeater about 15 miles away inside my home. The UV-17 Pro GPS radios would not. Not with the exact same antenna the UV-5R was using and sitting in the exact location. At first it appeared the squelch levels were set differently. But it ended up being sensitivity. The radios added features but is a step backwards in performance. Oh, the performance in the GRMS/FRS frequency ranges on the bench are even worse. I don't see them as serviceable on FRS/GMRS with the reduced sensitivity and the reduced power. Just use a UV-5r if in a pinch. There is a noticeable performance difference.

    That never got over 1 watt. That should be the headline of this review. You had switched to the 0-5 setting when you said 5 watts.
    This has to be a defective radio. Baofeng can build a radio that transmits near its rated power, but quality control isn't great in general with most Chinese consumer goods, and garbage can slip through. One of the risks with buying from China, I think. I'm having one delivered in a couple days and I'll test power. I don't recall if other reviewers have tested it. If it doesn't make >1w then people should know.
