This is easily one of the most thought provoking passages in the entire legendarium. You did an awesome job with this video
Thank you so much! 😊
Only Tolkien could spend years on an in-universe philosophical dialogue for his fictional world.
Indeed! He was an amazing author.
_Andreth adaneth, the life and love of the Eldar dwells much in memory; and we (if not ye) would rather have a memory that is fair but unfinished than one that goes on to a grievous end. Now he will ever remember thee in the sun of morning, and that last evening by the water of Aeluin in which he saw thy face mirrored with a star caught in thy hair -ever, until the North-wind brings the night of his flame. Yea, and after that, sitting in the House of Mandos in the Halls of Awaiting until the end of Arda._
@@lfwinesroad3399 I legit cried here.
@@anyoneattheendoftime4932 It's so beautiful :-)
We r too
The end brings me to tears. Await us there, my brother and me 😭
Oh I know! It’s such a moving line 😊
It gives hope for a joining of destinies and Finrods desire of it for his brother's sake and Andreths.
Thanks for sharing this. It is a testament to how deep Tolkien was that he thinks through the spiritual ramifications of the different elvish and mannish lifespans. One of the most interesting things that Christopher found to put in the history.
Agreed - Tolkien was amazing at bringing such depth and richness into his storytelling. We are all indebted to Christopher for spending so many years bringing his father's unpublished works to the public.
I love this obscure story so much! I was thinking of it yesterday hahaha
That end always gives me chills: *“but you are not for Arda. Whither you go may you find light. Await us there, my brother - and me.”*
“Await us there, my brother - and me.” I like to think that was old Andreth's final thought when she passed away...
This sadly obscure story, short as it may be, is one of the most beautiful, poetic, tragic and unimaginably deep works of Tolkien imo. I really would love to have met it earlier in my life...
The metaphysics, theology, drama, tragic love story and bitter hopeful end... I'm certain this is one the greatest literary works out there, it's a pity it is so obscure and not well know as it deserves...
I always feel... ethereal things and a certain hollowness when I move my thought too much to this story and that of Aldarion and Erendis...
I hope and have faith they'll met again, some day... that story is so beautiful and unspeakably _tragic..._
Thank you for the great vid! ☺️
Indeed! It is terribly tragic, but so wonderfully poignant and beautiful. I love the final lines as well :-)
@@lfwinesroad3399 I love the final lines too! They marked me greatly, I always remember it. Indeed their love isn't for Arda marred... but for Arda healed! This _will_ happen one day, I have estel of that!
I love how Aegnor will stay _willingly_ in Mandos until the end of the world out of love of Andreth, remembering that ineffable morning upon the hills of Dorthonion, for all the millennia to come, until they met again... beautiful, very beautiful indeed! Mandos is collecting quite an interesting permanent crowd: Finwë, Feanor and now Aegnor! Must be a family thing :-)
@@isilion I have estel of that, too :-) Haha you're right about Mandos collecting an interesting permanent crowd :-D
I am so so thrilled to have found this today. What a work of love you've produced. Hurrah!
This is one of the great conversations in all of Tolkien's work. I love it.
Indeed it is!
For me it is a fundamental text that allow to understand a lot of things behing the surface in the legendarium. Unfortunalty many people who knows Tolkiens work only through the films and books (teven if they have read the Simarillion) miss the metaphysical part of his work
@@philippes.9571 yeah, many people think it's just a great fantasy or action film and book but miss the metaphysical meaning.
A new video - thank you for retelling this complex exploration of death and nature of Tolkien’s world - it is easy to see Tolkien reflecting his real world faith - of Eru entering the world - how this could done to redeem it - but also of the long defeat of the elves bound to Arda which will some day fail - Tolkien is without peer - the beauty of language- I didn’t hear it when I first ready LOTR as a middle schooler - thank you for the video!
Great comment! I'm glad you liked my video :-D
Thanks for the recap, man I love this conversation. Its arguably more important than a lot of the Silmarillion chapters. It's tragic not much people have read it or aware of its existence.
I agree, which is why I hope more people come across this video so that they can go straight to the source material!
@@lfwinesroad3399 aye, the professor would be proud. Arguably one of the most important conversations he wrote being spread to a new audience who unaware of it existence. You don’t have to do this but maybe bring awareness to the later version of Finwe tale and laws and customs among the elder. As I reckon Silmarillion did Finwe a injustice. But yeah do whatever your passionate about. Love more content regardless.
@@Dylankiwi1 The Laws and Customs are indeed fascinating, and I would be interested in that in the future for sure!
You have added so much to my understanding of this love story of Aegnor and Andreth. I find it heartbreaking and beautiful.... if only.
I'm glad to have helped 😊 Yes, I agree that this story is just so heartbreaking, yet beautiful. It's one of my favorites. ❤
Tolkien's Christianity is showing through this excellent piece and I am here for it. Well done! Glad to have you back!!!!😄
EDIT: Aegnor and Andreth!! Now I want to cry. Such a bittersweet ending.
Great comment! And I'm glad to be back :-)
The return of the queen!
:-D Great comment!
😂😂
Seen so much of your vids. Gotta say you have one of the most informative look into Tolkien's legendarium. Great vids deserving of much more views
A new upload? It's been 84 years...
Many thanks!

What a gem of a conversation from JRRT. Thank you for sharing this. Have missed you and your uploads.
Thank you very much!

You’re back!
:-D
What a nice surprise to find a new video! I hope everything is going smoothly and you're having enough sleep time. 🙂
Great to have you back. Cheers.
Thank you very much! Yes, sleep time :-D It's definitely better than a couple months ago. I hope you enjoy the video!
So glad to see you back again! Such an interesting video.
Thank you!
That was beautiful! It made me cry 😢. Thanks!
You're very welcome!
Never thought that I’d ever experience anyone else’s opinion and thoughts on this!!! Awesome! Thank you!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed! 👍
Wonderful. This is top tier colloquial Tolkien! Brilliantly executed, thank you!
Thank you so much for such a lovely compliment! 😄 I'm glad you enjoyed it.
This is such a fabulous idea. I think this would be great for other sections as well!
Thank you! 😊
A beautiful and sad story. I believe that union of Elves and men would strength mankind and Middle Earth. That would be why the two were made physically compatible.
That's a great comment. I've never thought of it that way before! 🙂
I totally agree! Elven blood in Middle Earth would be a strength to mankind.
Bravo! This was wonderful
Thank you very much!
Ouch, my heart...
This is so unbelievably sad to me. A forever unfinished lovestory.
I agree. Such a sad story. 😞
Beautiful.
Would love too see you do some Collabs with like Red Book and Girl Next Gondor etc. Awesome video as always! We missed ya.
Maybe someday 😀
Welcome back! I missed seeing you in the notification bell AElfwine's Road! It was such a delight to see you pop up, and thanks for doing this video great job!
Agnor was a cruel sob, really hate him. I know it is harsh, but he fled out of selfishness and narcissism, unable to love the soul of poor Andreth he chose his vision of her. One who bore little resemblance to the reality of who and what she was I think. Technically the Elves were at peace so not marrying because it is war-time was a lie. And what of Idril? She had a child in war-time, same with Luthien, and Orodreth.
I love this dialogue but Finrod is blinded by love for his brother and his continuous excuses for Agnor are unbecoming of him. What I love best is the gradual character-development, deep within him he believed love between men and Elves to be impossible at the start. Yet by the end he's a believer, and I always attributed him being a shipper of Beren & Luthien to be due to this exact conversation. That it was the realisation of just how poorly Agnor had behaved when he used and threw away Andreth with nary a thought to her, that pushed him to want to help her last remaining relative have a happier time of it, and achieve true love.
In some ways, I think this story should have been included in the Silmarillion as a prologue to the tale of Beren & Luthien.
P.S. I've watched and re-watched your Beleriand video a million times already, and intend to do the same here ;)
Wow! I've never even thought of it from your perspective, but you have a point! And I agree in calling bs about the not marrying during wartime thing. I've always felt like Aegnor and Andreth got the short end of the stick in the Elf/Human department. Oh well, someday in Arda Remade....
I'm glad you enjoyed my Beleriand video :-)
Welcome back! ❤️
Thank you!
That was beautiful thanks
Thank you very much!
What a bittersweet story.
Indeed it is.
If anyone can answer this as ive always wondered about it. Do Gimli Frodo and the rest when they arrive to Valinor do they die peacefully or live on Tol Errse (that iland of Valinor) for the remainder of there lives or do they live forever 🤔.
I believe they live out their mortal lives and their souls leave the world the they die.
Omg you're back! :D
:-D
👍🏾
Yay ya back i was just thinking last night of putting a comment up on ya last clip asking when be back and hope ya would do a reading like ya did with The Silmarillon of the The Hobbit and LOTR or anything new especially regarding lesser known characters. Shout out to the 5th beatle i mean hobbit fatty bulger (hope i got the name right)
Shout out to Fatty Bolger, indeed! I'm glad you've enjoyed this video :-D
I was just writing to someone about this. Lol.

Hello there!
:-D
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I'm not crazy about your paraphrasing putting it in words that Tolkien never used. Would have liked it better if you had given direct quotes and then tried to explain it in plainer english.
Then this channel is definitely not for you! 😄
