As I was pondering the Gift on Healing one day, I understood that when I have the love of the Savior for a person, I will have the power to heal them.

About 15 years ago I was given the gift to interpret dreams, after I studied the process and the others that had the gift and prayed and ASKED for the gift to help others to know what the dreams mean, all to the glory of the Lord. I can never understand what the dreams mean without the aid of the Spirit, so if I get much out of line the gift will evaporate quickly. I am greatly blessed in helping others as we both learn what the Lord is saying in such a different way to us with such wonderful insights into what the Lord wants us to know and to be.

Not LDS, Evangelical Christian here. Obviously we've got some differences in scriptural interpretation. But I appreciate the manner in which you laid this out. Very helpful!

If you are referring to energy healing that is not of God. The Brethren do not condone energy healing as stated in the General Handbook. Energy healing is acting as a medium between a person and God in a effort to improve their emotional health and spiritual growth. It instead impairs the person's ability to learn to rely on God, His words and the priesthood. It weakens faith and allow demonic influence, disguised as light. Evidence that it allows a person to feel better (probably temporarily) is not evidence it's from God. Energy healing can never help another grow in becoming like God. We act poorly due to those who have had harmful influence in our lives which has created us to have false thinking. As the Brethren have said, there are no quick fixes. We heal step by step as we learn who God is, who we are in relation to Him and what His teaching are about how we should live. We then seek to recognize the false thinking causing our poor behavior and replace it with the truth.

@@strawberryme08, the gift of healing would be used as a member of the Church would think. A male would need to be living obediently and humbly seeking the Lord's will and words while using the priesthood to bless. A woman would do the same but instead of laying of hands with the priesthood, she would use prayer while seeking the Spirit's guidance.

I really do appreciate your lessons. You teach the information with clarity, precision and great humility. Those are wonderful, defining characteristics of a teacher. You also encourage your students to "find out for themselves". Like your question about a 3rd Tier. Great insight!
A Third Tier? Absolutely! But, notice that the 3rd tier requires more humility, purity and submission to the Spirit. Along with a higher degree of benefit to ourselves and others, it requires a higher degree of worthiness and a greater degree of participation from and for "others" as well.
    Again, great question/insight. Wonderful!
I hope you don't mind a suggestion or two.
Beholding Angels is only half of the category. Add: Ministering (as) Angels
    - When we receive a prompting of or by the Spirit of the Holy Ghost to help or minister to someone, and by THAT SPIRIT, ACT upon the prompting, we become Ministering Angels, as Elder Holland so beautifully pointed out.
    I would also add:
The GIFT of Charity. (Definitely a 3rd tier gift!)
-We can work to gain an understanding of charity and purify ourselves to be worthy, but The Pure Love of Christ, Charity, is a Gift. I include a quote of Elder Bednar's, from a Brigham Young University-Idaho Religion Symposium address given on January 25, 2003.
"Charity is not a trait or characteristic we acquire exclusively through our own purposive persistence and determination. Indeed we must honor our covenants and live worthily and do all that we can do to qualify for the gift; but ultimately the gift of charity possesses us-we do not posses it (see Moroni 7:47)."
I really, really enjoyed the lesson.

So, as I was listening to this gentleman share his thoughts that the parable of the talents was referring to spiritual gifts the Lord has given us - like faith, healing, administration, etc. (as opposed to musical, speaking, or mechanics). As I pondered it, I felt that maybe I was approaching seeking gifts all wrong. Perhaps, as I earnestly used the gift(s) I already had been given, the Lord would grant me more gifts (once I had proved my commitment to be a good steward over the one). Hence, praying for a gift, or trying to learn everything about a gift were not necessarily the key to getting another gift - but rather the use (investment) of the ones I had would automatically lead to the bestowal of more. But if I bury the spiritual gift(s) I had been given, they would be taken away. Does this make sense? Not saying we shouldn't still pray or study other gifts. Those are definitely important keys too - but just need more emphasis on using the ones we have more diligently before we can be trusted with more. If it's true, it means we'd better figure out what gifts we already have been given (so we can actually focus on using them).

    • @paulav7961
      @paulav7961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yup, what you say is true. Your gifts get more powerful as you use them to uplift others, and you will be given more gifts as you more fully utilise the ones that you have. Eventually, you may get the whole set. :D

FOR ME IS THE KEY TO DEVEPOLING THE ONES THE LORD GIVES TO THOSE WHO NEED. AS WE PROGRESS OUR LORD IS AWARE OF THESE GIFTS THAT ARE NEEDED TO BLESS OTHERS SHOULD ALWAYS TRULY PRAY FOR DECERNMENT THE LORD IS ALL KNOWLEDGE HE KNOWS OUR TRUE DESIRES! LOVE THY GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART MIND AND STRENGTH AND TO LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS AS OURSELVES. FORTHEE MOST PRECIOUS GIFT IS THEE AUTHORITY OF HIM THAT US GIVEN TO US. Agreed .Indeed we should seek for more! What Father would not want all that HE has. And even more. I know that's how I feel about my son. Following the LORDS direction most Father's would want that for their children. I guess my point was that 1st we need to stay close to the trunk of the tree. Our 1st and 2nd as you well know! Is to love our God HIS son JESUS THE CHRIST! AND TO TRULY SEEK TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. I. NEED TO DO A BETTER JOB MYSELF. TO GET OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE. ASK OURSELVES ARE WE REALLY DOING ALL WE CAN. FOR ME I SAY NO. BUT MY HEART IS TRUE I LOVE THEM EASILY I'M THANKFUL FOR THAT DOWN TO EARTH BLESSING. SO FOR ME IS TO BE MORE REFLECTIVE AND TO INCREASE THEESE GIFTS AS YOU WELL STATED. WE ARE BLESSED WITH SO MUCH . MY POINT WAS TO BE MORE GROUNDED TO THE 2 GREATEST COMMANDMENTS. THEN T G EE OTHER GIFTS WILL COME TO YOU 10 FOLD. THANK YOU BROTHER FOR YOUR SPIRIT AS YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME TO PONDER UPON THEESE SPEACIAL BLESSINGS...

Thank you for your hard work in putting these together! I do remember a General Conference talk given by Elder Marvin J. Ashton in October 1987 titled, "There are many gifts. In there he mentioned many Gifts of the Spirit which are not mentioned specifically in scripture - but are still gifts. One which he mentioned was "the gift of being able to ponder". Believe that I will take his word that it IS a gift (along with all the other seemingly insignificant, viewed by yourself and others, as not really being a Gift of the Spirit). Please know that I am not attempting to contend at all with your point of view mentioned in this video. Everyone has their own thoughts - that is one of the gifts granted to each of us, the ability to choose and think for ourselves. Only wanted to bring this talk to the attention of people (which had a great impact on myself, and also apparently Elder Bednar). Thanks again for all the effort, studying, and putting together these videos!

You should do a video on the process of revelation. Especially since it has been pressed so hard though #HearHim and basically every conference talk given lately.
You totally exemplify that process through having a desire to learn, receive and understand and then seeking out and studying the available information. Pondering on the things you’ve learned and recording it. Then sharing it if appropriate.
For me, I’ve found that the revelation really does come after everything I can do while I am writing and recording what I’ve learned and found to be true by the spirit. Just like the gifts of the spirit, most people do not take advantage of the process of receiving revelation and what we can attain. There is NOTHING that can or will be withheld from us if we do our part. You are clearly very familiar with this process and are continually refining and perfecting it.

    • @paulav7961
      @paulav7961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yup, that's how you get revelations: desire them; study the scriptures and related works; ponder them; share them.
The prophet Brigham once said that the Saints would be taught everything that Joseph knew, as fast as they are able to bear it.

Marvin J. Ashton gave a conference talk about this subject. It was possibly around the 1990's. I specifically remember him mentioning " the gift to be a good listener" among many others. Another comment is on the talents. In Luke i think he mentioned the hard work in gaining other talents will result , my thoughts, in being given a position of presiding over cities in the lower kingdoms in a future time.

One thing to remember about our gifts is they are meant for us to use on ourselves first and then we also use them on others. If you wonder what you can help others with look at what you’ve been through and struggled with most it’s likely along those lines! Also gifts show up with our deep interests too.

I think a way to increase our faith would be to remember to pray that it what we are seeking will only happen if it be the Lord's will, and to remember we are on His time frame not ours. Oftentimes the Lord is preparing away, teaching us a lesson such as patience, or testing our faith.

The gifts of the spirit seem parallel to how JRR Tolkien described the rings of power. There are many different rings written about, and lesser rings that exist but are not described. The wearer of each ring gains specific enhanced abilities which are usually not observable by others.

Thinking about the 7 x 3 principle and the last mentioned category, which has been given as Beholding Angels, is it possible that Level 2 of this category might be the Gift of Seeing Our Saviour and Level 3 might be the gift of Seeing Our Heavenly Father? As I was making notes based on your presentation (for which I thank you from the bottom of my heart) I felt like this was something that could be a possibility, particularly when I think of the Second Comforter as spoken of in the Scriptures.

Yes, I think you are probably right about that. It seems to me that Christ is the second comforter, so perhaps seeing Christ is level 2, and having him minister to you, like He did to Joseph and the Brother of Jared, is level 3?

I know you are on the right track. We are told that when we see Him, it will surprise us just how familiar His face is to us (Pres. Ezra Taft Benson). The 2nd half of Beholding Spirits in the Gospel App under Spiritual Gifts is Ministering Spirits. But, I firmly believe that seeing Christ face to face is a privilege we all can have. We have to want it and we have to want it for the right reasons. Are we not told so at almost every Conference?

Love all of this....let's not forget that when we are "born of the Spirit" (rebirth or born again) that we indeed have a personal "manifestation of Christ himself" via the Holy Ghost (Comforter). This is when we actually "receive" the Holy Ghost. And thus, they are both manifested to us in private. We know This Has To Occur before the Second Comforter experience. This is a higher gift/blessing as you are mentioning. If we are seeking the Lord's face, we need to make sure we have sought out and received our First Comforter experience first. I understand Father can do whatever he wants, and there are those who have had the First and Second together. But for most, it seems, the process is two separate occasions. It makes sense to my soul that as we seek higher blessings and spiritual gifts, we are signaling to the Lord we are earnestly seeking His face. I know you have been given some insight. :)

Gifts and talets ABSOLUTELY means gifts and talents like playing music etc as well. This isn't just the Lord telling us to develop only the gifts of the spirit. It's very important to nourish all gifts/talent. We know there will be music in the worlds to come. Even the gift or talent of being good at sport. Like every single thing has many many layers. And even small things like calm can be a great talent for some. Learning to work and grow literally anything at all (that's good) is teaching us how to do it in an innumerable other things as in many layers as we grow

In my blessing it tells me i was given the power of discernment. I believe mine has much to do with personal revelation. All my life I’ve been able to discern if something was real or true, I just ask, will this work for me? is what they are telling me true? what will really help ect. I’ve gotten in to the habit of just asking in my mind to be told if something is going to be for my best or not. I’ve had personal revelation all my life, it seems to come very easily sometimes, but I need to be careful to make sure it isn’t just an emotional answer, but truly from God. I have to say that every single time i’ve been given an answer on some topic, IT HAS WITHOUT fail been correct. I trust it completely! But I need to make sure i don’t get in the habit of asking to be told every little thing, because the Lord wants us to find things out on our own when possible.

Be sure to realize that though these gifts benefit us too, they are mainly to be used to help others and build the Kingdom of God; otherwise, it's like we are burying our talent. As you discern others, you can be led to know their needs and how to help them. While seeking to teach someone about the Church, you can know what they are ready for and what they are not ready for. Some won't be ready to learn about this church at all, and you may feel to teach only about Christ. And, with some, you'll know speaking of Christ would be casting pearls before swine and then you'd seek discernment to know who else you could bring to Christ.

As was stated by Oaks in the beginning of the presentation, I don't think we understand and utilize the gifts. Example, whenever this comes up in a lesson, it seems to always be followed with, "Oh, this is personal", "Don't share specifics of your gifts (say, from your patriarchal blessing) with others." Huh? So, with this being a semi-anonymous forum, a gift listed in my blessing is the gift to heal. I've often wondered how I can be more effective in this, with the backdrop of, "Don't offer, just be available if someone asks." What I'm saying is, how can I be more effective with this gift if I'm the only one who knows about it? Example, during covid, my belief is that covid is obviously a unique and real virus, but most of the propaganda surrounding it was not. I would not have hesitated for one second if anyone had asked me for a blessing when they had covid, and yet the culture surrounding all of this within the church is just sit tight and be ready if asked. No, we don't need to "toot our own horn", but we could do better if we are to fully utilize them.

    • @CliffWarren

Perhaps the "either/or" nature of the gift descriptions (gift to heal/give to be healed) is really meant to teach and highlight that in everything we are to work together as a Zion people.

The gift of knowledge and wisdom is indeed tied to the blessings of living by the Word of Wisdom and based on how much we are obedient and how much of the WofW we adhere to. One would not know that unless he/she is doing this and seen the blessings. We can't merely abstain from coffee, tea, alcohol and tobacco and expect the promised blessings of health, vigor, knowledge and wisdom unless we are eating the variety of fresh produce it teaches, eating whole grains as the staff of life and flesh of beasts and fowls "only in times of excess of hunger"-- when food is scarce, such as during "cold, winter or famine." Also... I think perhaps having enough faith to behold angels would lead one to enough faith to perform necessary miracles for protection and the ability to do God's will, verses faith to behold angels resulting from faith to be healed.

I think (but don't quote me) that it means that sometimes you are given blessing and at the end the priesthood holder says that it will happen "according to your faith". If you have that faith you will be healed because you have that gift.

I say this because, if a Brother tells me in a blessing that something will happen I believe him but IF he says it will happen according to my faith then I immediately jump to the conclusion that I don't have enough faith and therefore it won't happen. Good old Catch-22.

Sometime, it also seems I'm not to worry about it and instead concentrate on living the gospel better and helping others, and I'll be taken care of. In both ways, my faith has been increased in the ability of priesthood blessings to heal me.

I think sometimes I get a warning, but i dont feel like following it and think its probobly not the Spirit, but then I regret not following it in the future. What if I feel like I have the gift of prophecy? I have been shown or told many future things in my own life that have come to pass, but how would the gift of prophecy bless others, especially people I don’t have stewardship over? Or maybe it’s not a spiritual gift at all, only a form of personal revelation.

I have heard the Brethren speak from the pulpit many times mentioning the fact that the possible gifts of the Spirit are not limited to the ones specifically mentioned in scripture. (Because I have been very interested in learning about and seeking spiritual gifts I have paid very close attention to things that have been said in conference etc)
Bruce R McConkie said "The gifts of the spirit are infinite in number and endless in their manifestations because God himself is infinite and endless, and because the needs of those who receive them are as numerous, varied, and different as there are people in the kingdom.”
Marvin J Ashton mentions some of these less-conspicuous gifts in Oct 1987 conference, in his talk "There are many gifts" The gift of asking; the gift of listening; the gift of hearing and using a still, small voice; the gift of being able to weep; the gift of avoiding contention; the gift of being agreeable; the gift of avoiding vain repetition; the gift of seeking that which is righteous; the gift of not passing judgment; the gift of looking to God for guidance; the gift of being a disciple; the gift of caring for others; the gift of being able to ponder; the gift of offering prayer; the gift of bearing a mighty testimony; and the gift of receiving the Holy Ghost."
By teaching that gifts of the Spirit are limited to the ones specifically mentioned in Scripture you are putting God in a box. Don't put God in a box! I hope people don't get discouraged after watching your video if they don't see their particular gifts in the select few you mention. After watching your video they may think that if they don't have one of those, they must not have a gift, whereas their gift might be in one of the other endless numbers that aren't mentioned in Scripture. That would be a terrible shame.

You are missing the point that we are each given at least one of the stated "gifts of the Spirit" in the scriptures that we are to develop and use to bring others to Christ-- and we are to seek more of those stated gifts. These gifs in particular bring others to Christ and move the work forward. Beyond these, yes, we should be seeking and using all attributes of Christ which will help us have better relationships with others. The true gifts of the Spirit are to bring others to Christ's true church and Church of the Firstborn, to move the work of the Church forward, and to protect our health so we can continue that work.

Hmmm that's funny before I got my patriarchal blessing I'd been praying for heavenly father to show me or help me further build my talents. Not fully understanding what I was asking for. I had confused my talents for being my mortal life talents, and not my eternal ones. I was granted many gifts of the spirit it would seem. He directly answered so in my blessing. When I had asked in prayer I was hoping my sewing, my artistic talent good wax greater, and be good. I'm trying to keep my artwork clean. Knowing how easy it would be for me to chase likes, follows via creating pornography. I don't want to squander those talents either and had asked for help. So hopefully maybe he we bless me with both eternal and physical talents to be used in a way that pleases him. I will do my best.

You did not bear testimony about your personal gifts. What is your natural gift? I agree with you that as one grows in faith, he can acquire more gifts. For me, the first gift was knowing that Jesus is the Christ the son of th living God. The first time I remember going to Sunday School, I was 5 years old. We had just moved to San Diego. The teacher welcomed me to class as the new kid and then asked me if I knew who Jesus was. I did not recognize the name so I said, No. She went on to say that he was the creator of the world the son of God. I remembered being with them before I was born and I said, "Oh, yeah, I know who you are talking about." I just did not know him by that name. I found out later that Jesus is the Greek corruption of his name and that his name in Hebrew is Yeshua. I knew about the gift of healing since I was 5 also. My little sister had a kidney disease and the doctors had given her 6 months to live. My dad went with a couple elders from the ward and gave her a blessing. She was healed over night. I was only five, but I knew that when I grew up and became and Elder that I would have the gift of healing like my Dad and heal people, and it came to pass. I have been healing the sick ever since I went on my mission and I am still healing the sick as often as I get the chance. I still remember when I was confirmed and given the gift of the Holy Ghost. I felt something change inside of me, even though I did not understand it. Now I do. One of the benefits of receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost was that my grades in school drastically improved. I was barely satisfactory in the second grade and to start third grade, but after receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, I shot to the top of the class. The next gift was the gift of revelation. It is really hard to say when it actually started because I remember wondering about things and even before I was baptized and I seemed to have gotten answers that came into my mind, but I had not been taught to attribute it to God, but when I was twelve, was when my relationship with Jesus really began. While I was trying to go to sleep one night, I got an impression in my mind to pray. Just one word, Pray. Of course I had been taught to pray, but I had never initiated a prayer on my own before and I was afraid. Because of the fear, I tried to ignore the impression, but it would not go away. Then the thought came into my mind to analyze the fear. I thought about it and realized i had nothing to fear and I got out of bed and said a simple prayer. "Father in heaven, bless me with what I need. Thanks for what i got, in the name of Jesus Christ Amen. Then I jumped back into bed. Then the most wonderful feeling came over me. I knew I had done something right and I decided that from then on, I would say prayers before going to bed. That was 60 years ago and I am still at it. After that, the Lord took me under his wing and taught me how to pray and what to pray for and it came naturally to me to studying things out in my mind, and when I was receiving instruction from the Lord, whenever I was on the right track, I would have the same feeling I had the first time I prayed but when I would get off track, my thinking would get muddled and I would return to where I left off and start again until I was back on track and had the good feeling again. When I learned about the scripture telling Oliver to study it out in mind. I thought, "Wow, I have been doing that for years." The gift of vision came after I was sanctified. I was sitting in the celestial room of the Logan temple and after everybody else was gone, the Lord came in and asked me what I wanted to know. I said, "Everything, the beginning and the end and everything in the middle. The truth about creation and the future. I want to know what the ancients knew." The Lord OK and left. A few days later, My wife and I decided to study the Scriptures together and decided to study the book of Moses in the pearl of Great price. As we started reading, suddenly my mind was filled with a vision and I was seeing what was going on. I got so excited about it that I kept reading it seeing the vision and after seeing the whole vision, I would read it again and see the same vision again but with more detail. I still visit the vision and each time, I notice more detail. If you would like to know the truth about the creation let me know. I have been given many gifts. And I hope to obtain more. My Dad blessed me with the gifts tongues before my mission. I had tried to learn languages before my mission, but I nothing stuck, but my mission was to Chile and i had to learn Spanish. Because of the gift of tongues, but the time I came home from my mission, I was speaking like a native. I have been ministering to Latinos where I live and they all ask me what country I grew up because I sound like them. I could go on, but suffice it to say, in my ministry, Besides healing the sick, I have raised the dead, I cast out demons and I have walked on water. So now tell me abut your gifts.

    I really enjoy these presentations!
    But....
This parable isn't about talents (spiritual gifts or natural skills). The use of the money "talents" confuses everyone, it seems.
It is also Minas or Pounds but no one talks about loosing or gaining weight. We know those are money. But talent seems so easy.
Here's my point. Sometimes in life, we have natural talents, but those aren't meant to be our life's focus. We ARE supposed to put those on the back burner. God WANTS us to set them aside and focus on other doors he opens for us. The common interpretation of this parable causes guilt or concern for no reason.
The money represents knowledge, spiritual power, insight, love that God has freely given to you (like the money was given freely to the servents) and he wants you to use it to build his kingdom and magnify the giver of these riches. If if they were freely given to us we are expected to submit to the giver and NOT hide them.
We as believers raised in a gentile Christian culture miss out on true meaning because we grab what has been offered for so long and we think it is THE truths. We limit ourselves.
