    lol, every body is looking at Mike talking to himself on a camera! I admire Mike's courage for doing it for I would not want to try it in a busy restaurant in Hong Kong. High Respect!

    1:11 Good bowl of wonton noodle soup in Hong Kong where they put a Chinese ceramic soup spoon in the bowl to elevate the egg noodles from the soup stock to prevent the noodles from become soggy (sauna in soup).

      +Anna Payne Not only the beer is watery. The coffee is too. At least the coffee in No Cal. In Germany there is a term for this coffee. It is called "flower coffee", Because you could see the printed flower on the bottom of the cup even if it was full. ;)

    The small portion is done on purpose. A smaller bowl means it can be finished before the noodle and soup get cold.

    Adding hot oil to wonton noodle soup is traditional. Locals eat it this way too. BTW, wonton is designed to be eaten with one single bite.

    Dear Mike next time when you visit HK, try Mak Man Kee's (麥文記)wonton noodle in Jordan. 池記 is for tourists especially mainland Chinese, whilst Mak Man Kee is for local Hong Kongers. The latter provides a much larger portion, and the wontons there are 100% shrimp without any pork. Soup is also more tasty.
    Please be careful not to walk into the adjacent restaurant with a very similar name (Mak Un Kee---麥奀記), their portion is for toddlers (not even kids) and you will finish one bowl with one bite.
    You may also want to try Wong Chi Kee (黃枝記) in Central, they use a completely different kind (?whole egg) of noodle and is quite remarkable.

    • @tinyhowie
      @tinyhowie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sniper5354 I always eat my wonton in Shek Yum where it's close, I should go check out Mak Man Kee... like now lol.

    • @Sniper5354
      @Sniper5354 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +tinyhowie Do you mean Shek Yam in Kwai Chung? By the way, the best way to order wanton noodle, isn't to order a bowl of wonton and noodle soaked in soup. Old Hong Kongers used to order a dish of shrimp eggs seasoned noodle (蝦子撈麵---shrimp eggs Lo Mien) and a separate bowl of wonton in soup (淨雲吞). Don't forget a dish of boiled vegetables with oyster sauce, and a bottle of cream soda.

    • @tinyhowie
      @tinyhowie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sniper5354 Yup Shek Yam, and that old ways of ordering is fucktard expensive nowadays lol. It's only $20 just for a normal wonton noodle soup and ordering them separately easily costs $50ish. If I just want to casually have a small bowl of noodle the cheap way is pretty much the way to go XD.
      Of course, can't deny the fact that getting them separately is extremely satisfying. Just not for daily basis.

    • @tinyhowie
      @tinyhowie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Sniper5354 Just tried Mak Man Kee and it's legit Mike. It's really good, just a bit steep with the price. The bristle and tendon is very good with little fat, but thick enough to make your dry noodle incredible. I wouldn't recommend it to locals, but for tourist if you want the best out of it and don't mind paying a bit higher then it's definitely a good choice.

    • @Sniper5354
      @Sniper5354 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tinyhowie Pal have you also tried 新大光燈 (Sun Tai Kwong Dung-----meaning new gas mantle lantern....please try to copy and paste the Chinese name and you will find it in openrice) in Hung Hom? Their price is reasonable, and the food is SUPERB. Besides noodles, their congee is one of the best if not THE best in the area. The rice is all "melted" in the congee making it really supple and milky.

    Advice from a person who've lived in Hong Kong. If you do not have enough time or just too hungry to travel far to eat good wonton noodles. I suggest you to search up the nearest super super restaurant. It's a chain restaurant but they serve good wonton noodles. In my opinion, you can really taste the shrimp by just the noodles( 'shrimp noodles' ) and its soup. It's is not that expensive too. Just a bowl of it would be about $32 Hong Kong dollars (:

    I know I'm a bit late on this video, but if you ever come back to HK, I could show you some good places to get good wanton/brisket noodles. I go to different joints for different reasons, but I'd be down to go to all three. One in Cheung Sha Wan and two in Eastern Mong Kok.

  • @moshimoshiusa
    @moshimoshiusa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chee Kei is a chain. They are also locations in HK island. The noodle is the key. Every time I return from HK I can't have wonton noodles for a while since the NYC noodles just disappoints. There's no comparison. HK is not super-sized US so the bowl size reflects that. Bet Mike doesn't know he had a regular bowl when one can actually order a smaller version call Sai Yung.

    I love wonton noodle soup. I like mines spicy as well, it can be overpowering but they eat it like it doesn't bother them.
    For me, steam would literally come out my nostrils for it being so spicy. But its so good.

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If steam was literally coming out of your nostrils, that was temperature, not spiciness. Please don't use the word "literally" when you're actually speaking figuratively (the opposite of literal.)

    authentic won ton noodle originated from guangzhou. it only had 9 maces(approx 34g) of noodle and 4 won tons. the places you went to are trying to showcase the authenticity of their product so it is pretty small. every time i go, i plow through about 4 or 5 bowls too.
    ps - totally ok to use the chili oil...i do too

    I teased Mike in the comments section for talking his mouth off in that crowded and claustrophobic restaurant in his Hong Kong dim sum video, and the egotist in me wonders if that was the impetus for Mike talking about "personal space issues" near the 5 minute mark of this video, lol. Appreciate your videos Mike and I hope you keep making them. I always seem to learn something new from watching them. For instance, in this video, I never seemed to realize before that authentic Hong Kong wonton soup is made with a fish base. And my parents are from Hong Kong and I'm a lifelong New York Chinatowns wonton eater. You better not be lying to me or I'm unsubscribing.

    If there was such thing as a spicy noodle soup with hot oil as soup and only one strand of noodle in it, Mike would gobble it up.

    chee kei is a rip off place to tourists, they charged you 3 times the price as a normal noodle shop
    thats why you can sit comfortably

    What makes a good wanton soup ..First is the texture of the meat in the wanton...Second is the seasoning that they have put inside...And how
    al dente is the wanton noodles and finally the fish stock that is use to make the soup...My father use is make noodle by hand and is a noodle expert ...I have also investigated and tried so many ways of getting pure flavour...The secret of any noodle is not how much chilli oil we put as condiments ...But the actual natural taste of our food before we start messing about with our food...😑😑😑
