@@Luke_Starkenburg i hate to sound backwards, but is it possible that some of the people moving so fast have diahearra? and or the nasty shits? i cant think of someone or anybody moving that fast if theres no need to rush somewhere.and the red brick building in the right back part,is where a few trains go by

That is the club car. It has been elegantly remodeled inside. It has a full bar and waiter service. Members pay a $10,000 membership up front and a hefty annual fee. In addition, they have to buy a regular ticket. Everyone leaves at Lake Forest.

Great vid! My wife and I take long distance AMTRAK and Union Station is our main connection point. We always go to The Junction so I can have a beer and admire the gorgeous bartenders. But, both of us enjoy watching the commuters grabbing a quick drink. I've had some good conversations with them, friendly people. What is amazing, though, is that we watch commuters running up to the bar and the bartender has their drink in a brown paper bag to go. They know a LOT of their customers and are very efficient in rapidly serving them. The Station is nuts at rush hour! Metra moves a hell of a lot of passengers for sure.

    • @Luke_Starkenburg
      @Luke_Starkenburg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I enjoy watching the hustle and bustle during rush hour also! I'm not a commuter, but I take a few rides occasionally, and also take Amtrak a few times a year. (It's so different now, I'm sure. I hope it gets back to normal soon!)

  • @MrBnsftrain

I noticed at the first timelapse, that there were a lot of non-stainless metra coaches still in use!
The business car at 1:27 was a nice find! not too many private cars on Metra!
2:12 I've never seen a Metra light engine before!
    2:30 a 2nd light engine?!
I just noticed the El train to the far right at 3:09!
4:42 nice to see a repainted F40! I think that Metra's F40s should stay in blue while the other diesels recieve that livery!
11:47 I guess they remoed the special40th anniversary wrap on 100!
Thanks for sharing this! Virtual Railfan should have a webcam here!

Thank you for the memories it was very entertaining, and your time lapse is perfect. I could have watched another 12 minutes. One should review this video again just to observe how many CTA cars passed by in the background. But I found the watching the people, cars and truck pass by at street level enjoyable. Looking at the Garbage truck backing up into the viaduct was a real close call at time lapse speed.

If I can't live there, a proper live stream is in order. If I can, there's a pool and I'm good with it.

Especially since they provide along with the Pace Bus System, the CTA L Trains and Buses a very rich public transportation system

Yes, as a childhood model railroader, backing trains up seems dangerous and prone to derailments, but Metra and a lot of commuter trains use the push/pull method safely, even through all the switches and around very tight curves.

1:29 Car 553 operates twice daily on the Union Pacific / North Line between Chicago and Kenosha, Wisconsin. The car is operated as part of an agreement between club members and the Union Pacific Railroad (which operates Metra trains on the UP / North Line). While in the past, membership was exclusive to wealthy "North Shore" families, it has since become open to anyone who pays an annual fee of $900, in addition to the fees for Metra's monthly pass. The car arrives in Chicago around 8:00 am, and departs for Kenosha shortly after 5:30 pm

What an amazing railfanning spot. Definitely on my bucket list. It never ceases to amaze me how few cars are let through before the gates descend again. Honestly, I'm surprised that for such a big city, there isn't more traffic backed up, and also that the level crossings there still exist. I feel like by now they would have at least attempted to construct an underpass or bridge, which would honestly be the safest and smartest option. It wouldn't be as fun to railfan, but I'm sure the city would appreciate it.

loki352 I couldn’t believe the view when I saw it the first time! This pool deck is so amazing for watching trains! I also have a morning rush hour video and I will post a real-time video of this afternoon rush hour eventually. In answer to your thought about crossings, I know Tokyo has a few road crossings close to major stations where the crossing arm doesn’t go up much during rush hour.

@@Luke_Starkenburg Judging by Google Maps, I assume this was filmed at the "Alta at K Station" apartment complex. Do you live there, or were you just visiting (since I'm assuming only residents can gain access to the pool)? That's an amazing view and I'm honestly jealous of anyone who lives there. And with the rails wrapping around the building, I can't imagine any room providing a bad view.
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, a lot of level crossings on the Caltrain main are being considered for conversion to bridges or underpasses. Not much has been done so far, but I assume a lot of it has to do with the ever-clinging on California High Speed Rail proposal and the electrification of Caltrain. Also, we've got chaotic drivers and terrible commute traffic.
And I forgot to say, this is an amazing video. It's so satisfying to watch and really gives a good insight on how Metra rush hour is at the Canal Street level crossing.

To be honest, there was just a little bit of guesswork when notating the different trains. I wish there were LED signs on the train cars or engine saying which train it is. When I'm boarding a train at Ogilvie or Union Station in downtown Chicago I have to triple check the boarding platform for the train I want. When you are on the platform, you need to make sure you board the correct train on the left or right side. There are no signs on the platform or train. The signs are in the waiting hall, on either end of the platform. If I'm unsure, I'll ask a passenger or staff where the train is going.
