Hey mate how are you finding the steel rims? I’ve got an MR too and considering going to a 17” steel rim on a MT but just mindful of the weight factor!

Hi Mate, My initial reason to go with the black steel rims believe it or not was for the aesthetics! haha. I just love the more rugged look. in saying that, I recently saw a set of KMC MESA wheels (the gold and black combo) on someone else's vehicle that had me drooling in the car park. 😆 so my attention has shifted to a future upgrade to alloy wheels.
Aesthetic reasons aside, because we were planning on going to some of the most remote places in Australia my thoughts was that I would have much better luck fixing a bend steel rim in the middle of the bush than a cracked alloy rim. (and the steel rims are much cheaper to replace)
The weight is definitely a factor especially when combining with a MT tyre. I felt the difference more before we had the canopy.
With all the weight we currently have on it going to an alloy wheel will really help.
but in saying that, with all the top heavy weight from the roof top tent it might actually be a benefit to have some more weight at a lower centre of gravity to balance it out?
The other thing that I am finding is that every little paint chip on the steel rims turn to rust very quickly. And the other day I entered one bog hole with a shiny gloss black rim and exited with a matt black rim as all the paint got "Sanded" as the wheels spun in the mud.
