    This is one of the most concise and comprehensive video tutorial on anything I've watched. I learned a lot from it (plus, btw, I also "assign" desktops to apps in the order they're on my dock so I know what I'm swiping left or right to).

    Gary, this is a timesaver for sure. I never used Mission Control much except for using the 3 fingers on trackpad. Now that you explained the shortcuts and reasons to have a 2nd or 3rd desktop, I am already saving time with Safari on 1 desktop, Mail on another and so on. Using the 4 finger swipe was new to me. Had no idea that existed or the "control error" shortcut. Fantastic! 👏🏼

    Coming from years of Linux and recently switching to Mac, I really like the spaces (or workspaces). I don't find the Mission Control particularly useful though, as I prefer to set hotkeys for the number of spaces I use (in my case 5) which makes it way faster to switch between them than swiping or pressing F3 and clicking. As for moving an app, I just click and hold on the title bar and press the hotkey for the desktop I want to move it to (in my case Ctrl+1-5). Also, when I have the hotkeys assigned, my Mac always boots up with 5 spaces after reboot, and I can assign apps to always start up on specific spaces through the dock, really neat. Great video Gary, keep 'em coming!

    I recently started using Adobe Lightroom in addition to Adobe Lightroom Classic (been using that since day one). To keep them open nearly full screen I tried 2 monitors. Using Mission Control with Lr open on one and LrC open on the other is a better choice.

    Finally some tutorial on mess of spaces, desktop and Mission Control that makes some sense.
    I missed the use with multiple screens.
    Also I would like to configure that whenever I open a new app it always comes in a new space/desktop in full screen mode.
    Any idea how to do this?
    Most annoying I find that if I have an app in full screen on one monitor and I want to put a mother app to this monitor it is not allowed. The full screen app blocks the monitor! Of course I would like to associate the new app to a new space on the same monitor and when I move the new app to the monitor, I want to switch to the implicit new space associated with the new app.

    I discovered virtual terminals in Linux and was delighted to find them implemented on my Mac. I changed the setting in trackpad preferences and use three fingers to swipe right and left. I always have nine 'Desktops' set up, each with a different macOS or Star Wars backdrop so I always know where I am.
    Control-1 will go to the first screen, control-2 will go to the second, if you don't want to waste time control-arrowing around, just jump directly.
    I used to always use the trackpad gesture to bring up Mission Control, but to move a window to another Desktop, just drag it across. I only use that top window to see where everything is. It's fun to drag a bunch of files on one Desktop (always THE Desktop) to a program running on another Desktop.

    Hey Gary, yet another amazing and helpful videos. Can't thank you enough. You are really helping many Mac users around the world.
    The question is that I was struggling to understand the option within Mission Control that says "when switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application" Could you please demonstrate this or rather all other options do or share the link of the video if you did cover already?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try it to see how it works. Create two Desktop spaces. Open a TextEdit window in one and then move to the other. Now switch to TextEdit using the App Switcher or the Dock. It should automatically take you to that second Desktop space.

    Great video. No reflection on you, Gary or Mission Control in general, but I have never found having multiple desktops useful. Even on a Windows or Linux PC. I just wind up getting frustrated because I can't "find" what I was just working on. Command/Control tab or clicking on a partially visible window just seems quicker. Perhaps I'm just not "getting it" yet.

    Hey Gary, do you know maybe if there is a way to stop the system from rearranging the app's layout in mission control? Depending on the position of the cursor whenever I enter mission control, the apps change their places. This makes selecting the right one slower and harder. Thank you in advance!

    Hi Gary,
    this is going to sound like a strange question but how are is holding down on the window and pressing control and right arrow at the same time? I have big hands and that is a struggle for me to press with one hand as my other hand is on the mouse!

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some keyboards have Control on both sides. If yours does not, then just use the trackpad gesture instead. Or, use one hand on the mouse and right arrow, the other Control. Or, alternatively, drag to the top of the screen, wait, and then use mission control to move the dragged icon over the right desktop space.

    Hi Gary, Have you found any way to have Mission Control open with the icons expanded to to images of the Desktop in question rather than a numbered list, i.e. "Desktop 1" . . . ? I know that you can make them expand by moving the mouse pointer into that area, but I would prefer going straight to the larger desktop images.

      Do you mean screen or space? For screens, just drag from one to the other across screens. If you mean spaces (this is a video about Mission Control, so I think you mean spaces), just start dragging and switch spaces with Control+Left/Right or drag to the top to trigger Mission Control and then hover over the space to open it.

    Great tutorial, thank you. I use mission control all the time but there's one thing about it that really bugs me and I can't find an answer to. Is it possible to close an app in one of the spaces within mission control without having to expand it to full size first? I remember you used to be able to just drag the space outside of the mission control and a little dust cloud symbol would appear, signifying delete.

    • @macmost

      Close an app? Command+Q for quit.

    • @danieltownsend5435
      @danieltownsend5435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost Thanks, but I mean quitting without having to expand one of the windows from mission control. It's just irritating to go into mission control, see an open file/app that you want to close, but have to click on it and expand it to full screen before you can quit it (Command+Q).
      I realise it's a very first world problem but if anyone has the answer I'd be very grateful!

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danieltownsend5435 Not sure how that would be possible. You need one action to focus on the window, a second action to quit the app. I suppose a Option+click for the little circle at the top left in Mission Control would be a nice added feature, but probably not many people asking for it. Maybe use the App Switcher (Command+Tab) instead of Mission Control in these cases. You can use Q in the App Switcher to quit an app without switching to it. I use App Switcher to switch between apps, not Mission Control's interface most of the time.

    Gary I have a question, why do YOU use apple mail over gmail

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually use Gmail -- as my email service. Or one of them at least. I use iCloud too. I use the Mac Mail app as my CLIENT to access both of them. If I used just Gmail, I'd have to go elsewhere to check iCloud too. I have no problems using Mac Mail. Works great, looks a lot better, I don't need to be logged into Gmail (where Google would then track me to almost every site I visit) and Mac Mail integrates with Mac Contacts and other apps too. It is a nicer environment to compose emails too.

      What do you mean by "things." Do you mean file icons on the Desktop, or app windows? If you mean file icons, that is the way it is supposed to work. Any files stored in your Desktop folder will show on all desktops. Have worked that way since the beginning of this feature. There is only one Desktop folder and the contents will be seen on the Desktop background no matter which Desktop "space" you are viewing. Only the windows for apps are different.

    It would have been handy if Apple had some detail or links to more detail in the manual; from recollection I studied it carefully and learned almost nothing that wasn't obvious; while following part of this guide the TH-cam video was diminished and I wanted to stop it to confirm but the stop button had disappeared; the sort of thing that seems to occur with anything associated with Mac OS on a very regular basis; I was bemused when hitting F3 produced launchpad - but just maybe I'd hit F4; if I was using a Windows OS I'd say definitely my error - but its indicative of my experience thus far (with Mac Monterey OS) that a completely unexpected; less than useless outcome would not attract close attention as to whether an error on my part had occurred. It was a fairly clearly expounded recording; probably for newer users it would have been better to start with the "System Preferences' as "Mission Control" is its name there and that isn't a generic name for Window Management/Placement.

    I use Mission Control a lot. But there is one issue that I have not found an answer for. Whenever I open Apple's Book App, it automatically switches to whatever desktop I go to. Very frustrating. I wish that Books would behave like every other App and stay assigned to a particular desktop that was used to open the application.

    Dude, you try hard and you are probably the best out there. Unfortunately Apple is not helping with productivity when forcing us to search where to arrange the desktops "ON A FUCKING GRID" ...... human memory works best on a 2d pattern instead of sequencial ... who the heck is going to memorize "up to 16 sequential desktops" ? Now. imagine that in a 4x4 and the task suddenly clears out.
    Thank u Apple....

      16 spaces is a lot. I use spaces but I only have 3 at all times. Maybe look into using Stage Manager instead? Or Spaces + Stage Manager?

    How do I turn OFF that rubbish? It always pops up automatically and I don't have a use for multiple desktops.

      Just don't do whatever it is you are doing to activate it. For instance, if you are accidentally using Control+Up then figure out why you are doing that. (Same for anything else really).

    This is the only way to use a Mac. I keep 7 open all the time and stay powered up.

    I wish Apple did a stripped down OS for older people who could care less what amazing and ultimately useless things their Mac can do! Do you know why so many people don't know about these tips and tricks? It's because they really don't need them, they have no practical use for them! Most older people (and yes I know there are exceptions) only use their computer for emails, surfing the net, games research and blogs, maybe skype, facetime or zoom.
    It's a tool, not a lifestyle choice. So for the older pre- personal computer age' person, they don't want to learn new tricks, they don't want continual updates or improved anything. As long as it works and remains familiar that's all they care about. Having said that, I know an awful lot of younger people who seem to just play games on their laptop...
