Pentatonix rules of thumb: If you're asking, "Is that MITCH?", it's Mitch. If you're thinking, "That can't ALL be Kevin...", it's all Kevin.

This was their first of three grammys. Grammy's actually changed a category to be able to include them. This was recorded at home, mainly in the closet, for under $400. Kevin couldn't wear the contacts because they irritated his eyes too much. Hence the glasses. But they still kept with the Daft Punk feel😉

They have an invisible 6th member, arranger/producer Ben Bram. The 6 of them work out the arrangement together (2 of their 3 Grammies have all six names), with Ben creating the sheet music.
Also, the concert is a Christmas concert, so check out some of their many Christmas albums. They just put out a album, Holidays around the world, at the end of October, so check that out. (Only 1 MV so far, though.) Also, just today PTX was nominated for a Grammy for last year’s Christmas album, Evergreen.

One thing you will find about this group is lack of individual ego. They do what is best for the song, realizing that the supporting background is every bit as important as the lead. Some songs they slide back and forth so seamlessly between lead and background it is mind boggling.
They all have a deep admiration for each other's talents.
They are a gift to us all........and I hope they win the Grammy for their "Evergreen" album. They are up against some heavy hitters.

This one really shows off their mastery of percussion/beatboxing. Doing a cappella EDM is a pretty specialized talent! Kevin and Avi lived together in the early years, and worked on how best to support each other to maintain a continuous beat and fill up the space between the melodic notes. In some songs the effects flow between them so well it's hard to tell who's doing what. I'm a fan of the one-take videos that allow us to follow each member through the entire arrangement. Their cover of Kiiara's "Gold" is a favourite. If you don't know the original, watch it first to see how Mitch took the digital treatment that Kiiara used, and reproduced it, seemingly effortlessly, with just his mouth. Love your PTX reactions!

There is a backstage performance where they did this for VIPs without microphones. Unfortunately, the cellphone audio tends to wash out Avi and Kevin, but it gives you a great insight into just how little manipulation is actually done in production - the "electronic" effects like skipping, wavering and such are actually the way they sing it and not added later. You can find some live recordings with microphones out there too. I think they did it on a radio show live and the sound/mix is better than the cellphone recording.
Although Mitch and Kirsty do sometimes change their looks dramatically, Avi is the only one to have left the group. He did so amicably to spend more time with family and just for mental health because of a grueling schedule. Avi helped find their next member, Matt Sallee, who's still with them.

One thing that not a lot of non-fans are aware of, is that initially it was just the three 'singers', Scott, Mitch and Kirstie. And between them, they also had some skill with Beat Boxing (Mitch mainly, iirc), Scott can hit Bass notes as well, in fact, Scott often covers for Avi or Matt in songs with the Bass singers do their parts.
When they went to try out for 'The Sing Off', there was a minimum group size of 5.
One of Scott's friends knew Avi and suggested him for the Bass. They found Kevin off of TH-cam from his 'Cello-boxing' video.
They all met for the first time literally a few days before the tryouts.
That being said, Avi also does some beat-boxing, and as others have mentioned, can do Overtone singing. Many of the 'whoosh' sounds in songs is actually Avi helping Kevin out. Memory serves in 'The Sing Off', one song had a inhaling-whoosh, and and exhaling.. Kevin took one side, Avi took the others.
As for Overtone singing, think of it as whistling one note, (mouth only) and then adding a note from the throat (Usually his bass, but not always). It can be a pretty alien sounding note/tone at times, but other times it's very distinctly two different ones.

Since it's a Christmas concert, I'd concentrate on their Christmas music (which is amazing!) You should listen to their latest album as they are likely to do several songs from it. Unfortunately only one video (so far), but we'll watch you react to audio only! The one with the music video is Prayers for this World. Watch that at a minimum as I can almost guarantee they will do it. Be aware that this album has a number of instruments in it and the majority have featured artists from around the world; I'd say around half the songs have instruments, but they are so amazing! Other great ones from the album are Kid on Christmas (featuring Meghan Trainor), Love Came on Christmas (featuring Grace Lokwa), Hark The Harold Angels Sing (featuring Hiba Tawaji) and Invincible (featuring Shreya Ghoshal).
Also they will likely do songs from their (as of yesterday) Grammy nominated album Evergreen. From there try The Prayer (has a video), Over the River (has a video; features Lindsay Stirling), Evergreen (no official video; has guitar in it), My Heart with You (should be a video from their TV special last year), and I Saw Three Ships (no video).
They will also no doubt do songs from older albums too. Try Mary Did You Know (video), Joyful Joyful (live video from their Evergreen concert last year), 12 Days of Christmas (video), Thank You (video; has piano and cello), Amazing Grace (video), God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (video), Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy (video and won a Grammy for it), Oh Come All Ye Faithful (video), and The Little Drummer Boy (video).

Suggestion for your next reaction: Their Popspring 2016 performance. You get three original songs and Evolution of Michael Jackson.
There's actually a video of them performing "Daft Punk" without any mics.
There's an article on Grammy about how they arranged this medley, but somehow I only get a blank page when I clicked the article. Maybe you'll have better luck. "How Pentatonix arranged tight harmonies on 'Daft Punk'""
On their arranging process, from an interview:
MC: How is material chosen? Who does the arranging and how do you take a well-established pop hit and make it a Pentatonix tune?
Hoying: We pick a song with a great melody that we can agree on. Five of us sit in a circle. Kevin starts with a beat and Matt will sing the bassline. Then we improvise the lead and backgrounds over that and record voice memos to capture those raw moments. It’s really messy, super sloppy. We give those improvisations to *Ben Bram* , who translates everything to paper with all the little details and mistakes. He takes what we come up with organically and creates a structured arrangement that is “singalongable.” Then we work out the other details later. I consider “Hallelujah” our best arrangement ever and it was the biggest song in our history. We sang through it only one time before Ben cleaned it up.
Mitch Grassi: It’s a crazy process with crazy chemistry. We put a phone in the middle of that circle and stumble through the song, make up parts as we go along, and then everything has to be cleaned up so it sounds listenable.
During COVID social-distancing situation, they arrange online via Zoom. Ben would screen-share the music sheet of the arrangement and members of Pentatonix would tell him or "sing" him their ideas.

    • @Gwennedd
      @Gwennedd ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for that info. I knew they bounced ideas off each other...I've seen some clips of "during the tours" vids that show them getting together on the bus or in a hotel room and doing the "bounce it around" way they deal with new songs they want to try out. It's quite fascinating how well they all work as a group without any egos or grousing.

Getting information on this video in the comments is like a game of telephone... everyone is so excited to be the first to give "facts" they also read in a comment section, yet no one gets it quite right and so every new thing I read is more wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️
The studio they had booked fell through, so, yeah, they recorded the *audio* in a bedroom closet. The video was recorded in the kitchen... but by a professional company called Fifgen Films. There's actually a behind the scenes writeup by Fifgen in a Lighting & Photography blog. Scott is the one responsible for saying "for $400" but Fifgen said that was more like the cost of supplies.
The Grammy PTX won for this one was for the arrangement, not the video. PTX and Ben Bram were all named... and, yeah, the category was renamed from Best Instrumental Arrangement to Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella that year specifically so they could be nominated. They won the same Grammy the following year for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, as well. The year after that they won a *performance* Grammy, Best Country Group Or Duo for their performance of Jolene with Dolly Parton. It was just announced that last year's Christmas album, Evergreen, got nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album up against the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Michael Buble'.

      Sept 28, 2022 concert livestream:
      th-cam.com/video/a8PZ7_KMGM4/w-d-xo.html
So depending on if you are more interested in off-mic raw vocals or what they sound like singing it *now* (less than 2 months ago), there you go.
Also, all five of them plus their producer arrange their music. Ben Bram is the pro, but don't sleep on the band. They mostly bring Ben in if they are doing something really complicated or to polish something they were working on. All six of them were named on both their arranging Grammys for a reason. There are actually videos on YT of Scott, Mitch and Kirstie singing pop songs they arranged themselves *in high school*.
But good videos to watch regarding them arranging and how they do it are:
      1) This 15 minute fan compilation of all the times PTX were working on songs during their mini-documentaries in the early (Avi) years -
      th-cam.com/video/XbxPnbC9vnk/w-d-xo.html
      2) The Making Of Evergreen (don't have the link offhand but that's what it's called). I think it's 18 minutes long... it's the second week of recording, so you don't see the actual arranging, but you do get them fine-tuning the arrangements and you get to see how they work together as well as some fun recording moments. This was last August, so with Matt.
As for the concert... it should be an interesting one. They always sprinkle in some of their past Christmas (and some non-Christmas) songs, but I'm sure they'll have a ton from their new release. The fun thing there is that almost all of those songs feature guest artists, so in concert you'll get all new arrangements with the members taking the leads instead. I always prefer those... get me some good audio to bootleg, eh? 🤣

Well maybe not as complete as your information, is there anything that you have seen that someone mentioned that was wrong? Your information may be slightly more detailed, but I don't see how it differentiates from anything that anyone else said.
I was one of the first commenters. And I mentioned that it was mostly done in a closet. Keyword, mostly.
I mentioned that the Grammys category was changed. Although I did not specify what it was changed from or to.
But I guess, my information was false because it was not as complete as yours. Thank you for comparing us all to a game of whisper down the lane

Definitely check out the live version of this from the Hollywood Bowl (Miles Reuben's channel).
for the concert you should listen to their Christmas music since its a Christmas concert. From the sneak peaks it looks like they'll be singing White Winter Hymnal and Making Christmas from their older songs, there's also God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen which their usually perform, they might do The Prayer. You should also check out Joyful Joyful (Live form the evergreen Experience). They livestreamed their Xmas concert last year, this song is on youtube :)

    1. Yes, that's Mitch. They're wearing blue contacts. Also, this was something like 2013 or 2014, so we're talking Babytonix here.
    2. Not layered. They also do this live, and it's virtually identical except for the visual effects.
    3. Kevin is one of the best beatboxers in the world, if not *the* best. With Avi for bass they had an unbeatable rhythm section. And Matt (the new bass, since Avi left in 2017) is well on his way to being spectacular.
    4. The general pattern is that they sit around in a circle with Ben Bram (AKA the 6th member of Pentatonix) and come up with an arrangement that works for all of them. Ben is the official arranger, but they all have a say. Note that this is a medley.
    5. Recorded in Avi's closet for the acoustics, video recorded at a kitchen table, total budget $400, and then it won them their first Grammy. NARAL had to change "Best Arrangement Instrumental" to "Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Capella" in order to get a category to fit it into.
    6. Private performance, recorded with someone's cell phone but no distracting fan noise: th-cam.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/w-d-xo.html
    Congratulations on the concert tickets!
My husband killed himself about 9 months ago, and I just discovered Pentatonix 2 or 3 months ago - their music has made a horrendous time a little easier. And I bought tickets for *my* first concert the night they released the audio of "Prayers For This World." A friend and I will be going this Sunday. We could only afford seats in the nosebleed section, but we are darn well going to go and we're going to have a blast. Maybe in a few years we'll be able to afford a meet and greet. 🤞

All true, except they DO layer in their recordings. Most artists do it. It’s been talked about by Ben Bram most recently in his interview with Jacob Restituto. It doesn’t take away from their talent though, and they don’t add extra parts, it just helps make a fuller sound.

      Thank you.
On the 19th a man with an assault rifle walked into Club Q, a Queer nightclub in Colorado Springs, about 70 miles south of my home, and attempted to recreate the horror of the Pulse massacre from 2016. This time we got lucky. One of the men who was there saw people he loved being murdered and ran *toward* the danger, rather than away, and, astonishingly, actually managed to take down a man wielding an assault rifle, using his bare hands. Because of him, this time we "only" lost 5 people. One was the mother of an 11 year old boy. She died while trying to protect others, so there was more than one hero present.
I first heard about the atrocity at Club Q the next night while sitting in the Ball Arena, checking email on my phone while waiting for Pentatonix to come on stage. It was a good concert, but obviously it wasn't as much fun as I'd anticipated.
I have loved, and lost, so *many* queer friends over the years, to everything from AIDS to suicide to old age and heart failure, and the thought of any of them, or of the queer friends I have now, being at Club Q on the 19th, chills me. Beyond that, Club Q brought back all those old losses, just when I'm having to deal with this newer loss.
I've been listening to SuperFruit's rendition of Katy Perry's "Rise" ever since. It got me through Thanksgiving, which was very bleak this year, and I expect it to get me through Christmas, and my birthday next month. I've downloaded it and put it on my permanent playlist. It speaks to me of defiance of the odds, and hope, and empowerment, and right now those are the things I most need. And several hugs, of course - fortunately I have good friends for those, and I'll be able to meet with several this weekend, at *last* - I've come to hate Zoom meetings.

Hi I usually barely coment but I love your reactions so much I get as excited as you even though I know them already lmao so I wanted to let you know a few things
    1) you figured it out eventually but yes that is Mitch he went through a lot of different changes throughout the years lmao but now I feel like he setteled on what I guess is his style now it’s like he finally found himself in a way
    2) they arrange their parts together, usually they start with just Kevin learning the beat of the original song and then arranging it so it goes along with the other’s parts, if not Avi does the same thing with the bass and they build the harmonies and beat over it (Kevin and Avi used to work a lot as a team within the group since they were both in charge of the rythmic section)
    3) I don’t know if you know that but Avi left the group years ago because of the pressure their rythm of work was bringing upon him. They had a song without him and then recruited Matt as their new bass so you might see Matt at the concert instead of Avi but you’ll see he does an amazing job as well and Avi helped them find him so I guess they made a really good choice
    4) They recorded the Daft Punk medley in a closet and they put real house lights behind them for the effects lmao that’s actually funny to know when you know they won a Grammy for that song
    5) If you want more of them I recommend "Sound of silence" so you get to know Matt’s talent while enjoying Scott’s amazing range and the whole group’s incredible arrangement, "Aha" live in Singapour because they made an operatic intro which is not in the studio version of the song AND Mitch PERFORMS with a capital P, "Come along" for the intricate harmonies and again more of Matt cause he deserves more recognition, "Dancing on my own" which is the first song they made after Avi left and you can enjoy Kevin’s talent for Cello beatbox.
    6) other than that I recommend you watch videos of them singing for their VIP meetings just because it’s even more intimate than a live concert and you can clearly hear them without any effects and check out Superfruit channel if you want it’s Scott and Mitch’s TH-cam Channel, they’re not active anymore but they made a lot of covers and a whole album just them two
Here I hope you enjoy your journey these are all the songs I think will help you know exactly what they are capable of have a great day or night idk 😅

Avi, the bass, is doing a lot of beatboxing in this song.
It’s always Mitch and it’s always Kirstin. The only member change is when Avi left in 2017 and Matt came aboard. Don’t think you’ve seen Matt yet.

I have been asked on other videos to place the following on new reactors pages, so here goes:-
    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The members are
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
    Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range as heard during his solo);
    Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes.
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
Also worth a watch is the "Beginners Guide to Pentatonix" which shows several solo's from each member and a potted history. th-cam.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/w-d-xo.html

I am so excited for you and your wife! You will not be disappointed when you see them live. They are just as good live as they are in studio. I’ve been to one of their concerts in New Mexico, and I hope they come back. I will be front row again.

One of the best live recordings of Daft Punk is from the concert they played at Hollywood Bowl in September. It features their new bassist, Matt. Avi left in 2017. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/a8PZ7_KMGM4/w-d-xo.html. The same channel also has a video of them performing Bohemian Rhapsody at this concert that is much better than the one you watched, the mic balance and volume levels were almost perfect.

Whole catalog is amazing. Personally, my most listened to are cheerleader and save the world / Don't You Worry Child. One of my favorite ones to watch reactors do, that you haven't done yet, is definitely Wizard of Ahhs 😉

Wizard of Ahhs is genius! It helps a lot if you are familiar with the original 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, with Judy Garland. If not, you miss so many of the clever references they sprinkled throughout the video, and even the basic storyline.

Mitch and Kristy are somewhere between fashionistas and shape shifters….always massive changes in their appearance. Somewhere i remember hearing in an online interview that this arrangement was predominantly led by Mitch. I believe it’s all written out…since, Avi mentions at the end of this video, the sheet music is ‘available’. Great reactions so far.

They are going sing White Winter Hymnal at the concert. It's a little bit tricky. 😅 So maybe react to the music video before and find out at the concert, whether they are able to do it live. 😁
