    I used all the down pine tree around my property to build and fill in my raised beds plus the composted wood and saw dust from my wood piles I made use out of downed trees that otherwise would just rot in the woods looks great!

    Having the plants well above ground level is especially important in areas with very long rainy season as the roots will not rot.

      That's very true. We tend to get a lot of rain here so having an elevated planting area is beneficial.

    Looks great, If I could find the 2x8's free or cheap I'd do it that way. Being on your knees or bending over to pick beans is a young person's game!!

      Thank you! Check to see if you have a local sawmill near by. That's the cheapest place we've found wood.

    If anything I'd be using all that brushwood for biochar, especially if you like growing tomatoes.

    What's that wheelbarrow called and where to buy it?

    • @smokymountainfarmhouse
      @smokymountainfarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheelbarrow is a Craftsman that was purchased for Sears several years ago.

    You can see a problem already starting. Where the pieces connect in the corner you can see the board is already starting to curve out and pull away.
    Wood will bow as it dries and ages. Make sure you look to see which way it is going to go and secure those corners.

    • @smokymountainfarmhouse
      @smokymountainfarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We used rough cut wood from our local sawmill and let it sit for about a year before building them. Every board is not perfectly symmetrical and the corners aren't necessary square. However, they are very sturdy and do the job.

    Can somebody please explaine to me, why use a whole bunch of debris to fill up your raised bed to save on soil, if you could just make your beds shallower?

    • @cwestm
      @cwestm ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe they didn't have enough soil, but the limb will break down and become fertilizer for plants in the future.

    • @smokymountainfarmhouse
      @smokymountainfarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Having a taller raised bed is easier on your back and knees. It allows you to garden standing up versus on your knees or bending over extensively. If you made a shallow raised bed you could still put a small layer of leaves for added filler and organic matter. It will break down and turn to compost.

    • @Makemydayoutdoors
      @Makemydayoutdoors ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cwestm i just googled, it takes 50-100 years for wood to bread down in the ground...

    • @cwestm
      @cwestm ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Makemydayoutdoors It won't take that for those sticks, might take a while, but in that case it's slow release compost. No biggie~

    • @Makemydayoutdoors
      @Makemydayoutdoors ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cwestm i would agree if not for the fact that when wood breaks down it produces a giant amounts of nitrogen, with that being said the nitrogen level in your soil will be out of control.

    Nice video but the music is maddening.
