    If y'all are taking A&P in college anytime soon, take thorough notes on each of these lessons before you even take the class. I just took my final and finished the course with an A while the class average was a C-. It so important to have a basic knowledge of the material before even the first lesson.

    This video got me thinking. And not about the topic, but about how a small team of people can better educate over half a million people, using a relatively low budget, in a short time frame and in a less monotonous and entertaining way than a teacher, who has years of training, and the entire school year to educate only twenty or so.

      +Matt Cubed Education major here! One of the biggest factors that comes into play here is that Hank and John's largest asset is their entertainment value and the fact that they know how to appeal to large amounts of interested viewers. The format also allows much more flexibility than a high school classroom, in which teachers are hard pressed to plan and prepare daily lessons on top of a 40 hour work week spent administering them.
      Unfortunately, as I remember John pointing out in one of his many videos, youtube is a great place for information but not a fantastic means for education. The process of truly learning something is much more complex than simply watching a series of videos and "getting it", it involves remembering the majority of details surrounding the large network of information in place and being able to apply that information in practical ways.
      You must also remember that viewers of these programs want to learn, whereas students in schools don't have a choice in their education and are inherently less enthusiastic about it. Also, simply showing these videos to a group of students would not better educate them than actual classrooms because by only watching, students are not involved in their own learning. Imagine how many times you would have to watch these series over and over again before you understood all the terms, retained all the information, and mentally mapped out each complex process. Comprehensive understanding requires studying the knowledge and applying it to papers, projects, tests, etc.
      Long story short, we need our teachers, and crash course is an amazing supplement to education!

    • @seleneyavari5127
      @seleneyavari5127 8 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      That is likely because of how your school systems and courses are designed. Our educational foundations in North America are screwed. Instead of teaching how to learn they just get you to memorize facts and details that have no real world applications, then wonder why so many youth leave high schools with no life skills or common sense and are unable to get by. There are many different types of learning and the only one they nurture in the modern scholastic environment are those which will pump out the banker/lawyer/accountant sort, which is but a small percentage of the population. The rest are left untaught and wanting as they couldn't learn the same way and were left behind. Those people end up in the low paying jobs or trades they had no interest in purely out of necessity, when really, they might be geniuses and/or artists of unseen caliber that could truly benefit society. No, instead they are left without even the simple tools needed to educate themselves. Even with all the information available to them they wouldn't know how to put it all together or how to remember it if they did. And if they ever wanted to improve later in life, they will likely be unable to afford it because of the cost of secondary eds. It's a system that is broken and desperately needs a reform to catch it up to the 21st century. Apologies for the rant, I am just sick of seeing friends and family, myself included, robbed of their education and struggling year after year to undo the damage done by their early schooling, all in an attempt to move forward in life and be able to learn new concepts uninhibited as we were meant to do.

But, I am very pleasantly surprised that I actually retained more than I thought I did, and learned so much more. I will be adding these videos as my study companion tool. A&P, Microbio, Chem..these courses aren’t hard so much as they squeeze in A LOT of information and yes unless toyr a genius you can’t just study one night before an exam. You just need to STUDY! I worked literally 8 hours a day on Chem, hours n hours of homework in that class just practice the equations over n over on over again, study and you’ll get that 4.0 in all these classes. That’s all the advice I can give and it got me the perfect grades in all of these classes and lab exams. I’ll admit it’s exhausting & takes serious work but when you get those grades back in they’re in the 90’s (high 90’s) it is EXHILARATING!!!

    I just graduated high school this year, and I've realised that my passion in learning simply from fascination and curiosity is completely gone. I used to love all forms of history, biology, zoology, psychology, archeology etc, but because you are FORCED to learn to achieve some meaningless number, I've come to associate these subjects with stress and dread. I'm slowly coming out of that mindset, and have to contribute it to Crash Course, thanks guys!

I love watching them before class and being able to confidently answer any questions in class because the way the information in presented in crash course makes it very easy to understand and stick. I've recommended these videos to all of my peers and they also love them! I've even starting watching the other videos from crash course on psychology and world history because they're just so fun to watch! It seems like I could give the surgeon directions that are equally exact by saying, "It's behind the heart, but in front of the spine, and below the collarbone, but above the stomach. I wonder why we felt the need to invent new terms when we already had synonyms... they must stemmed from Greek/Latin, and we just stuck with them in the medical world.

    • @AidaaXD
      @AidaaXD 10 ปีที่แล้ว +117

      So that even when you move to another country the surgeon there could understand it: proximal from cardia, distal oesophagus etc. In medicine a universal language makes it easier to communicate between different parts of the world (or even for foreign students/doctors).

    • @istvankleijn3643
      @istvankleijn3643 10 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I think you are right about the terms just sticking around from Latin/Greek. But it is useful to agree on the body (of the patient) as a frame of reference as opposed to the doctor, and I think it can be useful to use different words than common language. For example, if you are lying down on your belly, what would be 'above' your stomach?

    • @RainAngel111
      @RainAngel111 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A lot of those words are used in different contexts and with different meanings. It just seemed easier to use new words so that once learned, there is no doubt of their meaning.

    • @ThePlayX3
      @ThePlayX3 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think they are more precise to doctors. ;)
      I'm French so it's less strange for me since I think these terms are more used in the usual day. Also 80% of the English terms used in advanced fields comes from French, thus Latin. These are not "invented terms". ^-^

    • @zedek_
      @zedek_ 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Istvan Kleijn
      You make a good point, I can see the use of having terms that are so explicit. However, if we're going to create a convention with entirely new words, surely we could simply just create a convention for orientation right?
      In this case, the convention would be using the "Anatomical Position", just as we already do. The head would be "Up" (Superior), the toes "Down" (inferior). The stomach would be "Front", and the rear would be "Back". We never use our current medical terms in relational the body's current orientation, only in reference to the Anatomical Position, right?
      Now I'm not saying we should remake the conventions, I just think that the way things turned out is interesting.

    I withdrew from my Intro to anatomy and physiology course this summer and I am going to take it again August for 16 weeks online. The thing that set me back was I had a negative mindset and I didn't believe in myself. And I didn't put in the time or effort to study for the class. I will be ready next month and I will do the best I can to think more positive and not give up when things gets hard. Because I want to become a nurse. Eh, I would argue that Hank was correct. Because, technically, you are just your brain (and spinal cord) so the rest is just a meat case to protect you... so yes, it is possible to argue that you are riding in your body... but it is really just semantics and there is no real right or wrong answer. Just at how you look at it.

      @geniusmp2001 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Istvan Kleijn How so? Sure, some aspects of you would be the same, even most. But your experience of the world would change. You would no longer sense things with that arm. You might be a very similar person, but not the same.

    • @geniusmp2001
      @geniusmp2001 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ellock1998 But we aren't just a central nervous system. What would a CNS do without a body? How would it experience the world? One can just as easily say that the brain and spinal cord are just there to do the computation work and message carrying for the rest of the body.
      The truth seems to be that you are not your brain, nor are you your mind. You are your body, of which your brain is one part, and from which your mind arises.
