She has of course, been honoured by The Queen, being made a Dame in 1979, and also she has the highest personal award that The Queen gives, the Order of Merit, restricted to 21 people only. Truly well deserved, the very greatest of singers.
I was very lucky to have seen Dame Joan at least a dozen times in opera and concert. I’ve been thrilled by so many great voices over the years, but from a technical perspective, she really was The Voice of the Century.
An appropriate and touching tribute to this marvelous human being and one-of-a-kind musical treasure. I feel blessed that my life coincided with her amazing musical career.
The year after I lost my Mother, I saw this tribute. How she managed to go on the NY Town Hall was an inspiration. God bless you La Stupenda! You're with your beloved Mama now.
Thank you for sharing this with us. I too have heard and met Joan on many occasions. She is not just a great singer but also a wonderful woman. I have just posted a tribute to Joan on youtube. My home in England is called Sutherland House.
This brings back such fantastic memories! I heard Dame Joan many times in opera and concerts in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego! There will never be another soprano like her. She is missed. It's a bit sad that she had to be helped up to acknowledge the applause...
Thank you for this, its what I would say is a LONG OVERDUE tribute to Joans outstanding voice! Lamentably we have NOTHING that comes close to her voice today and mediocrity seems to be the norm! Brava Joanie!!
Thank you so much SueAnn!! That was just wonderful. Who better to give the speech than Dame Joan's great "partner in crime". The last I heard, Marilyn, had overcome the cancer.
From the Met with Alfredo Kraus,1982...I watched it live, and in shock,on a little black and white TV as a music student...Still haven't fully recovered!
100Singers: That could be said about many of the Kennedy Ctr. Celebrants. The audience attends to be seen and enjoy the show or for a particular honoree. Elton John and Warren Beatty were also being feted and that drew a big crowd. Sadly, I thought this segment minimized her accomplishments and the time spent performing in the U.S., on television and how the U.S. in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s drove the performing arts.
People have commented about the supposed lack-lustre reception Dame Joan receives from this audience. But this event isn't opera specific, so she wont necessarily receive the type of acclaim that might've occurred at a gala tribute at the Met or the Sydney Opera House.
Such a wonderful voice and gracious lady! The voice in the opera house was incredibly large. She was obviously a bit frail by this time. She is missed...
Thanks so much Sue Ann Nivens for posting this rare gem. I'm wondering whether you've found Marilyn Horne's Kennedy Awards night. She is still among us teaching her Master CLasses while fighting pancreatic cancer. Does anyone have the Kennedy Center Honors that includes Marilyn Horne (Jackie). I'd love to see it!
I agree with you iriisblue--they could have found much better musical clips to go with the descriptions. The "Lover Come Back To Me" clip with Dinah and Ella shows her sense of humor, as well as the effortless range and power and beauty of her voice, for example. Ah well, at least she received the honor.
From what I understand, this is an edited selection of the video that was shown to the audience to fit CBS' time schedule. A newspaper review stated there were audible gasps from the audience during Joan's presentation.
If Callas was "The Diva of Opera" (in the best and worse sense of the word)...if Price was .“the Stradivarius of singers,”..and if Caballe' was "La Superba"...then to my mind, Joan Sutherland was "Opera's Extraterrestrial". Any and everything that came out of her throat, was just otherworldly in my opinion. To quote what Aretha Franklin said about the late, Whitney Houston "she had a gift...and it was a gift that separated her from the pack". That describes Sutherland to a tee, in the realm of opera. When I hear her voice singing "Casta Diva", Im always left thinking 2 things 1) no one else should be allowed to sing it, except her...and 2) everything is alright with the World in that moment.
ESTA ES LA GRAN CANTANTE DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS Y MUCHO MAS...MUCHO MAS....Y ESO LO SABE CUALQUIER PÈRSONA QUE TIENE UN MINIMO DE SENSIBILIDAD................
Could you give us John William's honor too please from the same year as Dame Joan's. Perlman plays the theme from Schindler's list and Slotkin conducts all of William's movie themes. It was great!
Am I to understand that Beverly Sills received this award decades before the greatest coloratura of all time? I love Beverly, but how is that even possible? Also, what was the name of the song that starts at 2:25?
Dark Feather: They were desperate one year and selected Sills. Not really, but this an American based honor system and she was an American although nationality does play a part. Sills also moved from singing with the New York Opera to running it very successfully and the becoming the chair of Lincoln Center.
formby2: You mean SIR Elton John. That way they had both a Dame and a Knight. And he is one of the other honorees. Warren Beatty is there but I doubt that he slept with her!
Dame Joan was the voice that made me an Opera fan fifty years ago. She is more than Stupendous!
She has of course, been honoured by The Queen, being made a Dame in 1979, and also she has the highest personal award that The Queen gives, the Order of Merit, restricted to 21 people only. Truly well deserved, the very greatest of singers.
2004.
Incredible soprano. Stunningly beautiful in her prime.
Long overdue but no less well deserved. The greatest bel canto singer in history.
no question.
@@tklogan111809 ha. funny.
Maria Callas
I was very lucky to have seen Dame Joan at least a dozen times in opera and concert. I’ve been thrilled by so many great voices over the years, but from a technical perspective, she really was The Voice of the Century.
That is three great women of song...Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald and Dame Joan...what a trio!!!!
An appropriate and touching tribute to this marvelous human being and one-of-a-kind musical treasure. I feel blessed that my life coincided with her amazing musical career.

Absolutely wonderful and a most fiting tribute to one of the greatest voices of the twentieth century. Thanks so much.
This brings back such fantastic memories! I heard Dame Joan many times in opera and concerts in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego! There will never be another soprano like her. She is missed. It's a bit sad that she had to be helped up to acknowledge the applause...
Horne's narration is just perfect.
Thank you for this, its what I would say is a LONG OVERDUE tribute to Joans outstanding voice! Lamentably we have NOTHING that comes close to her voice today and mediocrity seems to be the norm! Brava Joanie!!

The two greatest ladies of opera.
Immense artiste ❤❤❤
this was 2004, the best year of the honors so far.
I enjoyed very much this video!!! Thanks
Marvellous tribute from Jackie Horne. Brava, bella, brava!
From the Met with Alfredo Kraus,1982...I watched it live, and in shock,on a little black and white TV as a music student...Still haven't fully recovered!
Such a divine voice from heaven 😍
Fantastic!
thank you !!!!
One of the greatest opera singers and tragedic actresses of anytime.
Joan was a phenomenon.
I want to cry everytime I see this now! She looked soooo thin :(
Rest in peace, Dame Joan.
I'm sure most of those who give Dame Joan standing ovations don't even know her or have never seen her in an opera.

My impression is that they’re just stupid.
I’ve watched a lot of these and I think this reception is astounding. Loudest of them all.
I loved that.
Such a wonderful voice and gracious lady! The voice in the opera house was incredibly large. She was obviously a bit frail by this time. She is missed...

Sin dudas, la voz mas hermosa, y carrera dilatada, la mas grande y celebre cantante del siglo!!!!!
an angel!
Dame Joan, please say hello to Patricia Janeckova for me. May you both rest in peace.
La Stupenda

It's Dinah Shore Show.
At this, Sutherland sang 'E strano..'
MISS U DAME. INHUMAN PERSON MARAVILLOSA. QUEPD

2001 for the great Luciano, along with Jack Nicholson, Van Cliburn, Julie Andrews and Quincy Jones.
Rest in Peace!
que viejecita tan adorable!
and most of those people had never heard of her before.

Wow, Richard Bonynge was kind a hottie, wasn't he? (2:55)
Grant Linder: Yes, it is your comment which fueled his lifetime commitment to music. That’s what he was working for.
it is on youtube.
Her life story should be told, dramatized. Idk who would portray her? But God what a success story....dream your dreams

La stupenda
RIP
It would be great if you post the Kenedy Center Honoros of pavarotti, I think, they were on 2003
This was cut off..where is second half?
the piece (lucia) at 3:50 - which recording is this from?
A lot of the Hollywood audience is 'Who is she ?'
Not Jack Nicholson. He heard her several times and was a fan apparently.
Am I to understand that Beverly Sills received this award decades before the greatest coloratura of all time? I love Beverly, but how is that even possible? Also, what was the name of the song that starts at 2:25?
I think it's an aria from The Bohemian Girl“I dreamt I dwellt in Marble Halls”
its also a wonderful version

"I Drempt I Dwelt In Marbled Halls"...
E Bonynge? Perché non c'era nel balcone con lei a celebrare la carriera della Stupenda?
E la, ma non sul balcone
5:43 Looks like early 1972.
I wonder if this caused a spike in intrest of opera from the American people?
Why on earth should Elton John be in her party at this wonderful tribute?
formby2: You mean SIR Elton John. That way they had both a Dame and a Knight. And he is one of the other honorees. Warren Beatty is there but I doubt that he slept with her!
RIP
