As someone who's a disabled war vet, TheDriveGuyde I have to disagree with your assertion that the Can-Am Spyder isn't something that a rider could fall in love with. I used to enjoy my two wheeled motorcycles (sport and chopper), but those days are long gone thanks to an insurgents five bullets. I'm very grateful that Can-Am, Polaris, and a handful of other companies decided to create this segment. This gives disabled people like myself and able-bodied senior citizens the opportunity to fill the air rush past them, but in a safe and secure manner.
The 3400 km tour I took this summer afforded me many more memorable views of the scenery than I would get on my 2 wheeler, simply because I could afford to look around without worrying about the demands of controlling a 2 wheeler. So for touring, no more 2 wheeler, I'll be riding my 'toaster' while 'burning' a path to riding bliss!
I’ve never ridden a motorcycle in my life. How long did it take you to get completely comfortable with driving your Spyder? These look like so much fun.
I'me afraid that you still have a 2 wheeled approach to gear shifting, the Spyder does not need you to close then open the throttle when changing gear. Just keep the throttle at the same position then press the paddle and the bike will do all the adkustment for you and do a smooth change. There can be a bit of a clunk at low speed and gears but it's very smooth beyond second gear. Also as far as starting it will always be in neutral after startup regardless of which gear you left it in, just remember to use the brake when starting and changing into first. As far as keyless starting goes this is the best thing for professional bike thieves, just needs a receiver to pick up the signal they can take the bike anytime. I'll stick to the key which uses a low range security signal to allow the bike to recognise it, safer than the keyless, they may be able to pick up the signal but useless without the key. New keys must be programmed into the system by the dealer. Central locking for the various panniers etc would be useful but not always needed, I generally only need to open one at any time. I don't see why you would want a Harly trike, less stable and less reliable, new ones having major brake problems causing serious accidents. I probably do more riding longer distances now than on my BMW K1600GT so it is a bike for fun. My plan for next year is a 3000 + mile trip involving touring the alps.
Your comments on the Can-Am Spyder are spot on. Although I feel the HD Tri-Glide fit and finish (paint) is superior, the ride of the Spyder with the stock suspension, blows the Tri-Glide out of the water! Cheers, Safe Travels. 🙂 🏍
I'm not disabled, other than being 68 years old, but give me this over a Honda VTX 1800 every time for two up riding. It seems to me to be much safer with the three wheels, the no heat coming up from the engine, & the ride is very smooth. My wife feels safe on it and the ride is less tedious. These bikes aren't the head turners of a beautiful twin cylinder bike, but they are a great alternative to not riding. Plus the thought of disabled vets being able to ride is in itself enough reason to manufacture these bikes.
The Spyder is meant to be shifted up without rolling off the throttle. From first to second it has a bit of a lag on the Australian version, but the remaining shifting is very smooth.
Can't be true... he said folks will not fall in love with it... it's just a toaster. ;) In all seriousness when he got to that part I just rolled my eyes.
Just bought a Spyder RT Ltd in Scotland. Love my Spyder and great for non confident two wheelers. I watched this video so many times before purchasing and it was a great and honest help. Thank you.
Great information on the new Can Am Spyders that others haven’t touched on. New subscriber to your channel because you are thorough and you get to the point without wasting time. I think most of your points are well taken. Perhaps one opinion you shared may differ from your audience. You say this machine feels like a tool and compared it to a utility such as a toaster in the sense that no matter what a toaster does it just cooks toast. This is saying that the Can Am isn’t exciting. Like yourself, I sorta know what you’re saying because I compared it like riding an atv. But like yourself, after riding all kinds of motorcycles you cannot compare it too that. Motorcycles have the lean, the clutching, just an overall different feel so in that sense yes, the Can Am is less stimulating. But after obtaining my first Can Am, I found that it’s a different kind of experience and excitement. Now people have a true better experience towing in far more safety, having people see your wide stance and the wider frame of your lights with the motoring public ‘seeing you.’ The excitement comes in the form of enjoyment of the ride because you have far more stability and safety that makes you pay more attention to your surroundings (both machine and the great outdoors). When I am on the two wheeled motorcycle, I am constantly looking much harder for road kill, pot holes, loose gravel, highway debri that takes away from the full enjoyment of the motorcycle ride. While I still look for these same road obstructions with three wheels, there is definitely more forgiveness with some of those things mentioned. I seem to enjoy the riding experience more because I am simply more relaxed but not complacent. Hopefully this makes sense. It’s hard to explain for me telling others this experience. Anyways, keep up the great work on your channel and look forward to more of your content.
Same here 7th SFG Vet! And Father Time has caught up with my knees and lower back. Still riding my Honda VTX 1800. It's a 800lb bike and backing it up is becoming a little more challenging on my knees lately. Been eyeing the Can Am since it first came out, I am now on the market for a 2nd bike. Been looking at the Honda GW with DTC/reverse features but it also a heavy bike. But the Can Am RT is also appealing, I know this video is a few years old and the new 2024 Can Am RT might be my next move, I like the fact its 3 wheels and stable to ride and a different type of handling in stop and go traffic, I live here in Brooklyn NY. I will always have a 2 wheeler but for everyday use and going back & forth to the VA I would dig the Can Am. I would love to own both the Can Am & GW some day.
can't wait to get a can am down the road when i'm older. for now my body is holding up on my light sport bike with 74mpg.... I sat on a can am limited at the dealership and holy cow did that feel like sitting on clouds. Can-am spyders are incredible machines. Definitely for those who don't want to worry about clutch and balance and downshifting anymore.

I ride my spyder fifty feet to my mailbox.😂ride it long enough to get familiar to it. it will become a whole new enjoyable experience for you trust me. I have the 2020 rt limited.
Braveheart you are so right man I love my spider rt limited. This guy doesn't speak for me. In my first six months, I put seven thousand miles on my spyder. With my wife right on the back. I can't get rid of her😳I have ridden a motorcycle all my life. This is a wonderful change for me. I don't know what this guy means by a tool. Personally myself I will not buy another motorcycle. Once you get a spyder you can't do a couple of trips on it and make a proper assessment of it. you have to ride enough to understand it, and be comfortable on it. If you do you are going to fall in love with it. You might even want to put a ring on it. 😂😂
Excellent review. I especially liked your critique of the RT being a tool and not a toy. That’s specifically the reason I am buying one. It will be our second car. In my estimation the Spyder is the safest open air vehicle in the world. I would be buying it to travel from one city to another for my business. So it will definitely be a business expense. Once again, excellent review.
We had to go to three wheels a few years back after my wife's cancer in her brain caused her to have seizures. Our thought was if she had a seizure on a two wheeled motorcycle it might cause an accident injuring both of us and possibly others. Whereas on a three wheeled machine I think I should be able to pull over and tend to her needs without harm to anyone. She has battled cancer eight times. We chose the Harley Tri-Glide and put on 20,000 miles the first year. We are on our second Tri-Glide now and put on just a little over 10,000 last year. But our next will be a Can Am. Either the Spyder RT Limitied or the F3 Limited. I haven't made up my mind yet. It just seems to me the Can AMs are more refined than ANY Harley. I think the Spyder RT is the Ultimate touring machine for those who love motorcycles.
At age 84 I can ride with my son who is 30 year younger and my grandson-in-law who is 60 years younger. I couldn't do that with a thousand pound 2-wheeler.
Wow, I'm 79 in September, have been riding since 1963, Have a 1600 Nomad, Been Looking, I seriously want one of these. Been watching many videos here and got it down to a couple of colors and yes, it will be a Spyder Rt Limited, Has to be a used one for the price point, but hopefully in the weeks ahead I will be able to find one. The idea of being able to enjoy riding again with all the safety and just the feel of real enjoyment without the Two Wheel stuff is a game changer for me. So looking forward to having one. PS: we are the same height 6' 3" 235 lbs. The bike fits, and you have room for all your gear, oh, I could sell these for all the research I've put into Can-Am.
Do you think the Spyder RT has good enough build quality that I could put 300,000 - 500,000km on one without multiple things breaking? I currently have a Honda Goldwing with 250,000km, it rides like a new bike and has never broken down. Have only needed tires, oil and Spark plugs.
We test drove a Spyder several years ago before they had power steerimg and we didn't like the way it jerked from side to side with the least amount of imput, I tried to keep it straight but it was very jerky? Has the power steering improved that problem? My other question is about the ride for the passenger. We are on our second HD Tri-Glide and the ride input from the large rear wheels are very hash. I installed a pair of progressive shocks and only run 20 psi in the rear tires but when you hit a bump, like an expansion joint, or a pot hole the ride is terrible. Going down a perfect road is great, but there are not too many roads that are perfect, if you know what I mean? How smooth is the ride from the passenger seat? I would hope it is better, a LOT better than a HD Tri-Glide. It rhe steering has improved and the passenger ride is smoother, a Can Am Spyder RT Limited might be my next motorcycle.
I don't know which Spyder you rode, but they all have DPS (Dynamic Power Steer). At first the Spyder does feel jerky but once you relax in to it it will feel better. You have to remember you have two front wheels as apposed to one so you will feel the road more. I know a guy that was injured badly riding a two wheeler so went to a HD trike, looked at buying a new one but too expensive. Found out about Spyders and bought a 2021 RTL, now says he'll never go back to the 'standard' trike style.
Shaft drive should be considered. Can Am continues to be plagued with belt/alignment problems. Get rid of belt drive and you will have me as a new customer. I'm 6'4" as well. I ride a goldwing with a slight mod on the seat raising it three inches cutting it back 4 inches. Which does not leave much room for the passenger. Which can am has. That said. My next bike will be the BMW grand America. No seat mod required because the bike seat has the room for two. The new Goldwing does not work for bigger/taller individual. The bike is a lot smaller.
I agree about the shaft drive. Along with that Can Am should have detachable saddle bags like BMW had. Had them on my BMW R100/7 that looked like suit cases. Really handy to take off and held alot of stuff.
Quick fix call Lamonster garage have fix for belt vibration. Spyder set up right I burn rubber and no fear in curves. Upgraded sispension, Cat. dele pipe. Now she rocks you just don't know how to set 1 up.
Great review, thank you for sharing 🙂👍. Precisely what I'm afraid of: enjoying the ride, but not passionate about the machine. Guess a test drive's in order. Thanks again.
Your rite, Harley is also very expensive to buy. Rotax makes motors for small airplanes to they have to be reliable. Don’t want any engine trouble at X thousand feet! 😳
Thanks for your comment. This video and many comments from former Harley Davidson owners has made me forget the Harley and look at the Can AM. I am interested.
Hello In August I will be traveling to Pennsylvania from Florida it will be interesting to have a another route, Route 99 sounded like an interesting Could you send me your route?
The salesmen, both of them, didn't even know that it has power steering. I wasn't permitted to test drive one or trade in my motorcycle. Look up problems with the Spyder before buying one and make sure that your dealership is knowledgeable and dedicated to the product. I didn't buy one for those reasons and I would advise anyone else to research all of this before buying one.
@@tonyrowland9216 We only have one basic dealer, 2 locations, in the Tucson area so service and warranty work is questionable. Phoenix has the same dealer and the same policy. I have a place in Indiana and the dealer there has invited me for a test drive. I'm going to take them up on it. I see virtually none of them on the road in Arizona. There's probably a reason.
Try a F3S with uprated shocks , swaybar a RLS Punisher exhaust and a mild stage 1 remap.. Grin From ear... To ear... RT's are rather slow and sluggish , cause you know, its a fat, well equipped tourer with auto leveling suspension?! This aint...
You shouldn't be reviewing the spyder, you have no clue what the hell you are talking about. You have nothing to compare it to and you have no experience , at least 500 miles driving time, to rate it. Any true Spyder rider will have nothing but smiles and a positive attitude about the Spyder and that's where it's at. Take you review and stuff it.
I was with you until you said most won't fall in love with it and it was more like a tool than..... and you compared it to a toaster..... no. Sorry. LOL I have always likened these vehicles to be like a snowmobile with wheels. And plenty of folks simply love snowmobiles. ;)
The worst thing I ever bought and used. I've had an accident. Fallen over 37feet over another call. Bleeding inside my head comma, had to cut my skull bones, seizure...few months later another seizure attack left me paralyzed, have had cranioplasty surgery...still recovering from paralyzed... thanks God i was partially paralyzed. Wife stolen all my bank balance business as well properties luckily parents took care of me. I've had good health insurance. My car was paid off my wife left it as its not drivable conditions
Well, You should have got back on the Spyder... You would be well now, and loving every moment of life,,, sounds like you lost your dreams guy... "Change your Attitude, Change your Life." time for some new dreams and new living of life.
The design is so ugly, the gas milleage is very bad, it just a proof of how the engine is not performing well, this engine is known for burning a lot of oil, there nothing of high quality on these thing.
I’ll bet you’re the life of any party. I’d wager that you get on every motorcycle review and post what total shit whatever bike that’s being reviewed is.

Spyder RT should be a shaft drive, 100% reliable drivetrain.
Ditch the belt Can Am !!!
30,000 Km here never a problem with the belt Maybe you were unlucky or something.
Great review, thank you for sharing 🙂👍. Precisely what I'm afraid of: enjoying the ride, but not passionate about the machine. Guess a test drive's in order. Thanks again.
Harley-Davidson tricycle. Less storage. $18,000 more. Plus a questionable engine.
Hello
In August I will be traveling to Pennsylvania from Florida it will be interesting to have a another route, Route 99 sounded like an interesting
Could you send me your route?
try shifting at 300rpm. very smooth shifting
The salesmen, both of them, didn't even know that it has power steering. I wasn't permitted to test drive one or trade in my motorcycle. Look up problems with the Spyder before buying one and make sure that your dealership is knowledgeable and dedicated to the product. I didn't buy one for those reasons and I would advise anyone else to research all of this before buying one.
find another dealer.
Great bike
Car license only required in New Zealand
Try a F3S with uprated shocks , swaybar a RLS Punisher exhaust and a mild stage 1 remap..
Grin

To ear...
RT's are rather slow and sluggish , cause you know, its a fat, well equipped tourer with auto leveling suspension?!
This aint...
They go up to 200 mph and can beat almost 99% of the cars on the roads. Slow and sluggish 🤣
@@BlakWiseCracker He just dont know.
Make it 20 more horsepower, add a turbo and shaft drive. :)
😂🙌🏽
I was with you until you said most won't fall in love with it and it was more like a tool than..... and you compared it to a toaster..... no. Sorry. LOL I have always likened these vehicles to be like a snowmobile with wheels. And plenty of folks simply love snowmobiles. ;)
You will fall in love more so then ANY toy you have ever been on and I have had them all. So calling it a toaster is idiotic to say the least

Сколько стоит такой спайлер?
I love my toaster what do you know😅
Yes, Butter or Jam, It's all in the Ride...😇
Has no idea what he is talking about. Shame. Please stick to cars.
Not correct that you need a motorcycle license to ride this in Ontario. A G licence is enough
A toaster? Seriously.
Sounds like a BS story.
The old 998 did drink oil. The 1330 does not.
I’ll bet you’re the life of any party. I’d wager that you get on every motorcycle review and post what total shit whatever bike that’s being reviewed is.
