I had the same feeling. I was like, “Whoa, that’s true.” Reality, at the individual level, is how it is perceived and experienced. This was a great story.
I had my own (literal) “lollipop moment”. A few years ago I connected with an old friend from my 4th-grade class. She said something to the tune of: “Of course I remember you!! You went to Disneyland and I said, offhandedly, ‘bring me back something!’. And then you went and when you came back you had bought me a lollipop from Disneyland. It had Mikey’s face on it and I was so moved that you had actually thought of me that I cried. I’ve remembered that small act of kindness my whole life and I’ve tried to model my life off of it!” … I don’t remember that happening at ALL. But it warms my heart that it did.

So we all can agree we had an assignment where we had to watch this video and write stuff about it
Whenever I see school janitors, company maintenance workers and so forth (the ones who never get appreciation), I say, “I know what you do is pretty much a thankless job, so I want you to know that I think you’re doing a great job.” That’s it. Nothing more. In that moment, though, it’s incredible how much they light up. I’m nobody important, but to hear that their work matters and someone is taking notice, they glow with pride.
You do, do you? I'm sure they love that. (Eye roll).
That's very thoughtful of you, Nate. It is nice sometimes to be noticed.
It's great that you show your appreciation. I wonder if you'll consider leaving the "what you're doing is thankless" part out of it, and just tell them you appreciate xyz. I say this because maybe they don't feel their job is thankless, and it can be presumptuous/patronizing to imply that it is.

I used to work at 99th street elementary school. I had a student that would never want to do homework. Their teacher would come out to speak to me to see if there was a way I can have him complete his homework after school. At the beginning it was challenging to tell the student to do their homework and they wouldn’t want to. Was in 6th grade. He was very smart. Was great and super fast in math. There was a rainy day where we were in the auditorium and there were fewer students that day. We sat down to try to work on homework together. And I asked him why he wouldn’t do his homework. It was not because he did not know what he was doing. Or because it was hard. He simply said no one at home cares if I do my work or if I don’t and that he did not see himself going to college so what was the point. I talked to him and said, you are very powerful. And only you can choose who you want to be today and in the future. If getting a good grade on a test or on a homework assignment makes you feel good then do it for yourself. Be proud of yourself. I will be proud of you also. It was not a super long conversation. We did homework together that day. And from that day forward he would do homework during homework time or would ask me for any help he needed on an assignment. His teacher was impressed to see how he had began to do his homework with me. I feel like that changed his mind when it came down to the work he did and what he offered. I wanted him to know that if things were a little different at home that he had support from me as his staff and that as a staff I care about his good grades and his work being done on time. That was a lollipop moment for me.
my right ear has just improved its leadership skills
i watched this for a school assignment but honestly I got so distracted while watching it listening to him talk about this stuff that by the time it was over I had forgotten about the assignment because I was so intrigued. Im glad I had to watch this video, very inspirational

Honestly I feel like this is a very underrated TED talk. It's memorable, a lovely story and food for thought.
Such a quality and timeless video. Every time you feel any sense of doubt of your influence, you should come back to this clip to understand the power that you have.
This is a great example of how powerful doing something simple can change our view of leadership. The key message is Drew's own 'aha' moment, we should all strive for those moments.
I just loved the way he shared his story which I felt from the heart. Just loved ur speech.

What a fantastic reminder of just how powerful each and everyone of us can be in our everyday lives. I have always maintained that every interaction with another human being is an opportunity to make their day. I LOVE the lollipop story and as a business transformation consultant I am now thinking of ways to use this as an initiative in bringing teams closer together in the workplace... "Lollipop Moments". True leaders don't have to proclaim that they are leaders. It shows through and others recognize it. If you have to tell others, you probably aren't a leader. Or maybe not a very good one.

So I met this guy at summer college and I bummed a cigarette off of him and in that moment I felt this is going to be not somebody I just bummed a cigarette off of. I dated him for a little bit and then I fell in love with his best friend. His best friend ended up being my first love and I dated him for three years. After we broke up my friend introduced me to my first loves ex-girlfriend and we became fast friends and we are still great friends to this day. Years later I was dating someone who treated me badly, being a bit of a “bad kid” himself my friend convinced me to get back together with him. Just a month later I got pregnant. I did end up leaving that guy but I ended up getting a wonderful daughter out of it. While I was pregnant my friends little brother killed himself, The only reason why stayed sane was because of the child growing inside of me. Two years later to the day that friend committed suicide I became better friends with his sister. Four months after he committed suicide I went to his sisters baby shower in Phoenix. I drove all the way up from Tucson. That night I went out with my cousins and I ended up meeting the love of my life and my now husband Who is wonderful to me.My friend had made such a huge impact on my life that I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like had I never met him. I didn’t put it all together while he was alive but I know I have told him over and over in my head. You never know who is going to make such a huge impact on your life. I guess that’s why I have a hard time letting people go. My Friend was a pretty bad influence on me and yet everything worked out exactly as it should have. In fact had he not committed suicide I would’ve never met my husband it is just so strange to see the butterfly effect.

This is great! I'd like to use it for my online community college class. We must follow the ADA laws for accessibility. The auto-generated captions are not sufficient. Would you please edit/correct the captions and ensure proper capitalization and punctuation so I can show this to my students?
You can re-edit the captions yourself, it's not that complicated.
Reaching as a student I'd incline toward sharing some steps, just download the video place your captions edit or formalize the text in the presentation Capitalization will be the responsibility, so nothing to worry about.. voice modulation can also be supervised
