Indianapolis, Washington, San Fran, Seattle, Minnesota, Cleveland, Denver, Chicago were all playoff teams in 1987-1988. So they were the BEST that year, For some reason Seattle was put in over Houston, whom they lost to, and New Orleans was not included either (they lost in the first round). Throw in 4 very POPULAR teams from major franchises (New York, Miami, LA, Dallas), and yes they are THE BEST AND MOST POPULAR teams. Thanks for playing!
Tecmo Bowl is primarily based on the 1987 season. However with my research of player rosters, Tecmo Bowl features some special teams players that had prominent roles in 1986, but not 1987. The SF kick returner Derrick Crawford last played in 86 for example, but is included in Tecmo Bowl. That suggests Tecmo started to put together ideas about which team to include before the 1987 season started.
Tecmo Bowl was like the NES version of NFL Blitz, a super fun, easy to pickup and play, fast paced, ultra violent football game. It was so awesome that even when Madden came out and my friends had Sega Genesis', we would still go back to good ol' 8-bit Tecmo Bowl.
those super long passes are one of the things I loved about tecmo/super tecmo bowl. always fun to run back to the other end of the field and passing to the end zone.
This was so....BADASS back in the day. My friends went on for days, months and years playing this growing up. The hype from the running plays was unreal! Friends cheering you on, man oh man it's priceless!
the headband logo reveal is one of my favorite youtube moments. In my head I was thinking "its probably an awesome throwback to Houston Oilers".....reality was so much better.
This was the first football game I grew up with, and my Dad and Uncle played it constantly. That is, until Tecmo Super Bowl came out and blew us all away. I remember my stragety well... Just call a pass play, throw it from endzone to endzone, and hope for the best.
This review gave me the warm fuzzies in addition to being informative about some game components I was unaware of in my formative years. Well done, Patrick!
i remember back in like NCAA football 2004 when they had the classic teams and the all american teams Mike Vick was like Bo Jackson...you would play on Heisman level and run laps on the field and score TDs cause the defense had almost no concept of cutting off angles and just chased after guys.
I would have enjoyed this more if you had kept it more football-ignorant-person-friendly, lol. At one point you just started spouting phrases and jargon that I had no idea about what it meant anymore. Maybe it's just the wrong video for me, but usually I can watch retro sports game reviews without issue, so I figured I'd leave some constructive criticism from my perspective. Liking your stuff so far (been aware of you for a while but just subbed today).
This was great, Tecmo Bowl was/is and will always remain one of the biggest classics released on the Nes. It was guaranteed that either you or your neighbor had a copy of Tecmo Bowl. Highly popular game back in the day. Gem.
This review was great the idea of reviewing a Super Bowl game was just plain awesome I usually don't play sports games that much but this one is no exception.
I'm only just now getting into your videos after watching James Rolfe's vids for years...I LOVED Tecmo Bowl, and thanks for making this vid. I always played 1 player, so I had no idea 2nd player play choices had an effect on the game! Now I need to dust off my NES...
was a game highlight of my youth. had a tournament at a friend's birthday party. with the 1 rule being no raiders (bo Jackson). Al being game nerds I felt all else was fair. was surprised no one objected to my pick of San Francisco. until the finals when my opponent figured out there is a pass that cannot be stopped no matter what you do. Walter Payton wasn't enough as the 49ers cruised to victory.
As someone who isn't really big into sports and knows nothing about football, this entire review went right over my head. Seriously, it's like you're speaking an entirely different language! Lol
I cant remember if it was this or techmo superbowl or if they are one in the same, but, i remember there was a team or a few teams on this game that had a play were u could throw 99 yard touchdown passes with ease almost everytime, i use to dominate my friends and cousins with that play, this was a great old school football game, and one of my fondest old school game memories, excite bike , mike tyson punch out, zelda, techmo bowl, ninja turtles,,we had it pretty good back in those times, i had the dragon quest games and so many others that would be worth money now days, hell my games wound up being worth more than my cards and comics. Go figure. Wish i had not of sold them years ago
The 3 things that kept me from playing Tecmo Bowl were that it didn't have all the teams, it didn't keep stats, and you couldn't play a season. Tecmo Super Bowl resolved those issues.
tecmo bowl as well as nes pro action football drew me into nfl games...then madden came along and blew it oiut of the water. NFL 2k was pretty good..wish it would come back.
I don't like American Football but I have been known to enjoy a game or two based on the sport. Chief among which is Madden 2005 on the PS2, that game was like crack to me for about 6 months. I loved all the team management just as much as playing the games. If we're talking about classic American Football games I'd have to go for the original Madden '94 on Mega Drive.I loved that game and knew how to recover the ball after a punt every damn time lol. I had a friend that owned an NES but I grew up with a Mega Drive. I'll show myself out...
This, Walter Payton is the Bo Jackson of that game. Sweetness is amazing. Also good timing Pat with this review to youtube. I saw this originally on your site, but I'll watch it again.
Ikr? I was SO ready for "Sweet Victory" from Spongebob to start playing when that cameo popped up, but nope! Just a cameo! Stephen Hillenburg was rolling in his grave when that happened, I swear.
I don't like sports games really at all but I will admit I liked the soundtrack. I wish tecmo would've used that in a ninja Gaiden game too, it could work in a sky or mountain themed level or someplace where peppy, energetic music fits in.
In tecmo bowl I use to run my receiver's straight out, the play was down and A on the controller, and would run my qb all the way back and bomb it into the end zone. 8 times out of 10 it was a touchdown!!!!
Boy do I remember this one.I wanted this game for xmas, but there wasnt money to buy it.I started to scream everywhere I go "I want the bowl game" for hours.Turns out that my parents already bought it along with Castlevania...Never did I yelled like that.
***** Thumbnail looks like the Britney Spears goes crazy/shaved head era photo. I got that too. I had to do a double-take. Pat's a beautiful man. I guess...
Why review Tecmo Bowl and not the superior Tecmo Super Bowl that is the basis of a strong tournament circuit and is still played in various forms today?
Hey Pat. Your mate Kevin reminds me of that Undertones tune "My Perfect Cousin". Made me think of the bit where he cheats at Subbuteo... did you have that game in the States? Great video dude, lots of laughs :D
Wouldn't say they picked the 12 best teams. Buffalo, Cincinnati and Philadelphia (all division winners that made the playoffs, with the Bengals making the Super Bowl) could've easily replaced the Colts, Broncos and Raiders, all of whom missed the playoffs in 1988.
the head band joke is the funniest on all of the pat videos
Hell yea shit had me rolling
the silent Rob :DD
Agreed.
Top notch. It's the GOAT
We all had that friend like Kevin.

I love the look on Pat’s face when he turned his headband around. Pure gold!😂
Why is it that Pat ALWAYS look like he has never slept in his life?
He's permanently stoned.
I always thought he wore eye liner
I assume it's genetics? I've had the same issue my entire life. Everyone thinks I'm stoned or I'm an insomniac lol.
I loved the advertisement for Rygar on the scoreboard.

Rob's silence was so simplistic yet so damn funny to me. Thanks again, Pat.
I love the uncomfortable silence about "just dance 2" on the head band LOL!!!!!
the headband logo reveal is one of my favorite youtube moments. In my head I was thinking "its probably an awesome throwback to Houston Oilers".....reality was so much better.
funniest intro, dude. Was not expecting Just Dance 2 lol and then ROB just staring at you hahah
This game sure helped me understand football. Played with the Raiders of course. Wish I played this much earlier.
Staredown with the robot was AWESOME
When I was a kid, one of my neighbors had tecmo bowl for the Nintendo, I loved it then and I love it today. I even like the PS1 version.
Everything I know about football, I learned from Tecmo Bowl.
I can relate. Everything I know about guerilla wars comes from games like contra and Ikari warriors.
Everything i know about submersible warfare i learned from silent scope.
Same

my man!
@@iank3924 Classic! Man, I was only 29 when I posted this old comment, hoooly bejesus.
@@johnnybensonitis7853 that's awesome
@@iank3924 You the man! Brought back some memories!
This review gave me the warm fuzzies in addition to being informative about some game components I was unaware of in my formative years. Well done, Patrick!
It's really a damn shame this video doesn't have more views
Some of my greatest memories as a child were playing tecmo Super Bowl with my dad
The music goes well with pats frustration during the pat and robs playthrough.
Did anybody else see that photo, of who I'm assuming is Kevin, that lasted one frame at 8:56?
It was cool to see him featured on AVGN's video. AVGN is a really cool guy who gives anyone a chance to prove himself.
i remember back in like NCAA football 2004 when they had the classic teams and the all american teams Mike Vick was like Bo Jackson...you would play on Heisman level and run laps on the field and score TDs cause the defense had almost no concept of cutting off angles and just chased after guys.
No one cares.
*****
ha
The avgn neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeds to do LJN sports games
I liked Tecmo Super Bowl better cause it had Detroit, and I could use Barry Sanders.
Wars & Wars & Wars on the weekend Vs. The Maxwell brothers 1990 1991. Great Review Patrick
This review was hilarious! Damn you, Kevin!!!
I would have enjoyed this more if you had kept it more football-ignorant-person-friendly, lol. A well presented criticism here. But I think if Pat had stopped to explain every term he used the video would have been 45 minutes long lol.
Always excited when i come home and see a new video
The headband gag was priceless. Kudos for making me choke on my water.
Kevin came back as R.O.B.
With his judgmental stare.
Still the second best football game ever behind TSB.
Yudo NeidaNo yes
The headband bit will never get old for me.
I still play Tecmo Super Bowl today. I just mod the players and teams for todays NFL. Its Epic.
Rob's "face" was the best! hauhwuhauhwuahuwhaw Rob is my favorite!
This was great, Tecmo Bowl was/is and will always remain one of the biggest classics released on the Nes. It was guaranteed that either you or your neighbor had a copy of Tecmo Bowl. Highly popular game back in the day. Gem.
I always preferred "Tecmo Super Bowl"
+Juan Diaz Do you mean Tecmo *dling-dling*?
This review was great the idea of reviewing a Super Bowl game was just plain awesome I usually don't play sports games that much but this one is no exception.
What about techmo SUPER bowl on NES?
Oh yeah Tecmo $#%&^$%#^
Los Angeles. Bo Jackson. Fuck yeah! I loved this game.
I'm only just now getting into your videos after watching James Rolfe's vids for years...I LOVED Tecmo Bowl, and thanks for making this vid. I always played 1 player, so I had no idea 2nd player play choices had an effect on the game! Now I need to dust off my NES...
I used to write down stats from games in a notebook and act like it was a professional season

LOL, your friend spied on your plays! We had a rule, defense chooses first, for both Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl.
Tecmo SUPER BOWL will forever be known as the greatest football game on the NES.
youdud44 AVGN hates it.
LOL that friend-betrayal rant was incredible

DAMMM THIS VIDEO TOOK ME BACK B.. I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS GAME ON A BLACK & WHITE TV LOL- THE STRUGGLE WAS PASS REAL, IT WAS LIFE!
Y U no film in HD?
The 3 things that kept me from playing Tecmo Bowl were that it didn't have all the teams, it didn't keep stats, and you couldn't play a season. Tecmo Super Bowl resolved those issues.

8:20 Pat's shoot promo
About time Pat reviewed another NES game!!!
review Tecmo Super Bowl
How are there only 28k views on this vid? Best game reviewer on the internet. Liked, subscribed, bought the DVD, shit self...wait, not that
I’m still conflicted about the word “Super Bowl” nowadays thanks to the 2019 Halftime Show.
F*****g Sicko Mode.
Ikr? I was SO ready for "Sweet Victory" from Spongebob to start playing when that cameo popped up, but nope! Just a cameo! Stephen Hillenburg was rolling in his grave when that happened, I swear.
I don't even like Football as a game... but Tecmo Bowl was fun to play with friends.
WHOA WHOA WHOA there Pat!
Ya think you can go back and start over and go a bit slower?
I didn't quite catch any of that.
I don't like sports games really at all but I will admit I liked the soundtrack. I wish tecmo would've used that in a ninja Gaiden game too, it could work in a sky or mountain themed level or someplace where peppy, energetic music fits in.
I loved this series part 1-3
Dammit Pat, you're going to make me like American Football at this rate.
You should play Tecmo Super Bowl...
where is the spanish captions pat?
Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl are both extremely awesome games.
Does anyone remember on ATHF, Carl was trying to sale Giants jerseys but it turned out the said Gnats instead.
In tecmo bowl I use to run my receiver's straight out, the play was down and A on the controller, and would run my qb all the way back and bomb it into the end zone. 8 times out of 10 it was a touchdown!!!!
Probably my favorite Photoshop cover of Pat lol
Boy do I remember this one.I wanted this game for xmas, but there wasnt money to buy it.I started to scream everywhere I go "I want the bowl game" for hours.Turns out that my parents already bought it along with Castlevania...Never did I yelled like that.
One of my favorite episodes!
Pat: football talk football talk football talk
Me: :3 I REMEMBER THIS GAME!! Oooh the voices and the player models and the music and... MINNESOTA!
Britney Spears in a Football helmet @0:18 lol
***** Thumbnail looks like the Britney Spears goes crazy/shaved head era photo. I got that too. I had to do a double-take.
Pat's a beautiful man. I guess...
LOL I was here to write this comment, nicely played
I know I'm late to the party here, but what part of NJ are you from? I'm from Newton and went to college in North Brunswick.
I love ROB so much. Please, bring him back!!!
Sadly I don't even think Madden 17 is a good and fun as Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl overall.
I love how the review spiraled into a psychotic episode for a minute there
Why review Tecmo Bowl and not the superior Tecmo Super Bowl that is the basis of a strong tournament circuit and is still played in various forms today?
Tecmo Super Bowl (The sequel) was far better.
Yes
Yep
Agreed
R.O.B.'s pause at 2:00 is classic.
Hey Pat. Your mate Kevin reminds me of that Undertones tune "My Perfect Cousin". Made me think of the bit where he cheats at Subbuteo... did you have that game in the States? Great video dude, lots of laughs :D
OK you mentioned it, where's the review of TSB?
Hey any NES basketball and baseball games good on this console as well?
If only Nintendo had promoted Rob as being this much of a wiseass robot sidekick they'd have sold millions... I know I would have bought one.
Besides Oakland is the best in TB because they have Bo Jackson
Friends don't let friends look at each other's controller.
Why doesn’t anyone talk about super tecmo bowl?
There is a kickstarter for "Mutant football league" setup by the creator of mutant league football. EVERYONE BACK THIS!
my god, i probably wasted more time on tecmo super bowl than all the other nes games combined.
That's the best game on nes in my opinion I still play it to this day
What dose it keep bleeping out
you look like britney spears in the thumbnail
The headband joke made this whole video.
I have this game but the cartridge doesn't work
Made paperboy my ringtone
