Oh wait, it was the Giants, not the Jets. And knowing Carl Banks and Laurence Taylor were together as an OP duo alongside Joe Montana and Jerry Rice at the SF 49ers, it makes sense
Tecmo Bowl is the only video game that my dad has beat me on. I'm happy to have at least one video game I can play with him that he enjoys and is good at. For that, it is a model sports video game.
A friend of mine when I was in elementary school's step-dad used to play Tecmo Bowl with us all the time. We could never beat him, but it never stopped me from practicing and learning the ins and outs of the game. Now it's me who's teaching people how to crush at it! haha
“Execute interceptions” is a very funny way of putting it. TSB taught me how the sport of football works in a very high level way, and I’ve been watching it ever since.
Another outstanding episode!! Your stuff is going to be just as important archivally going forward as the works of the likes of Gaming Historian, Classic Gaming Quarterly, and Kim Justice. Just great, well-written content! Keep up the fantastic work.
Tecmo Bowl was one of the few sports games I could really get into as a kid. Picking Chicago, handing the ball off to Walter Payton and having him dance around tackles all the way down the field never grew old.
I had Tecmo Super Bowl on my uncle's hand-me-down SNES as a kid but since I didn't understand American football I only really played it with friends. When I got a bit older (and had lost the SNES) I learned how wrong I had been, the addictive and snappy action of the games lured me back through emulation. I actually learned what a "down" was so I could get better at the game. Tecmo Bowl was a welcome and somewhat surprising addition to the Wii Virtual Console that I picked up, though I always wished they had brought over the superior sequel as well, whether the NES or SNES version.
Believe it or not, I learned the rules of football by playing Madden, and subsequently became a football fan, but I stopped playing that around 2007. Then I rediscovered Tecmo (Super) Bowl through emulation, and I've been a fan ever since. And this is coming from someone who likes NFL Blitz! Oddly enough, I like the NES version better than the SNES version.
The 1988 Mets won 100 games and the division behind the masterful pitching of Dwight 'Doc' Gooden, Ron Darling, and a young David Cone who went 20-3. They lost to the Dodgers in 7 games in the league championship series.
I rented Tecmo Baseball one weekend when it was still fairly new, and I even back then I remember thinking it felt lazy that the exact same hit off the wall in centerfield happened multiple times a game. We see it here at 1:31. 😀 35 years later, it's never left my brain. (Oh, and Tecmo Bowl was amazing, of course.)
Lots of NES baseball games yet to come. Baseball Stars, Bad News Baseball, Roger Clemens' MVP Baseball, Base Wars... I have lots of fond memories of those games.
@@Frigidevil A really fun baseball title was Baseball Simulator 1.000, which gave you normal baseball if you wanted it, but also a kind of super-power baseball in the Ultra league where players had special swings and pitches and each team had a number of "power points" to use during the game to activate the special powers. Really need that strikeout? Spend 5 points on the hyper fastball that goes 160mph.
I am no fan of football, but Tecmo Bowl absolutely delivered a game worth playing. The 2 player option was absolutely brilliant. If you could smuggle a peek at your opponents play selection, you could counter it very effectively. This naturally lead to players hiding their controllers to make selections or simply punching the other player in the arm for daring to peek.
Thank you so much for bringing up the soundtrack for Tecmo baseball I don't really find the game that's fun to be honest when it comes to good baseball games but the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, Keiji Yamagishi killed it.
God we loved Tecmo Bowl as kids. We used to get into fights if you chose LA or Indy. Eric Dickerson was broken also. Not as broken as Bo was but Bo knows Tecmo Bowl ;)
Tecmo Bowl is a classic, hands down. It simplified the football format enough to let anyone play it and feel like they're good as t the game. My favorite is all the modern ROM hacks that try to add modern teams and players :D
Who here didn't have their home city or state's team in Tecmo Bowl and/or Baseball? Me. No Philadelphia OR Pittsburgh! The first team I beat Bowl with was the Chicago Bears and I still remember the password I earned to get there. ABAFEFAB and it's against Seattle. I can barely remember what I ate for dinner 3 nights ago, but I sure as heck remember passwords from games
Most likely since I looked at a list of NES games and Ultima is the only one released in the relevant timeframe where the grand finale joke would make sense.
I wonder if Tecmo was going for the Renegade strategy again with their baseball games, releasing separate games for each market to appeal to the region's tastes. They'd release the much more cutesy and anime-inspired Gekito!! Stadium in Japan at the end of 1989, which NA would see the next year as my personal favorite baseball game on NES growing up, Bad News Baseball.
There is definite high/low emphasis. Watch what happens on a low pitch when you hit A vs when you hit down+A. The swing looks and acts quite differently
Tecmo Bowl is a classic but as you say, it isn't even Tecmo's best in 1989 (Ninja Gaiden). I definitely think romhacks like Tecmo Bowl '22 are neat. And next time on NES Works: the Year of the RPG begins....from Pony Canyon?!
So... the team to play in Tecmo Bowl is LA, because Bo Jackson (34). Of course, I could be wrong, due to the overlap between Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl.
Never played the baseball game, partially because there were so many of them in the US between this, RBI, MLB, Bases Loaded, Baseball Simulator 1.000, etc. Tecmo Bowl, on the other hand? Classic at the time, as it got a lot of play at my house. It was the best football game on the market until Super Tecmo Bowl because Ten Yard Fight, John Elway, etc, didn’t cut it. I only say “classic at the time” because sports games don’t tend to age well given massive advances in game design and tech over time. The playbook boiling down to “Rock Paper Scissors Touchdown” was appropriate in its time but hasn’t held up between advances in playbooks, pre snap adjustments, roster management, etc. But Tecmo Super Bowl definitely fixed a lot of those issues while keeping the same basic gameplay as the original.
I genuinely feel sorry for everyone outside North America who didn't get into Tecmo Bowl because of cultural reasons. Way better than Speedball, for sure!
Tecmo bowl was great and the follow up TSB improved so much. Tecmo baseball was ok. If you watch, there are only a few ball trajectories when you hit the ball. Bad News Baseball was the better game. And i would take RBI over tecmo baseball
Thank goodness for this channel, it’s my only saving grace on this insufferable day.
Hearing Jeremy proudly talk about his game-winning goal-line stand made me smile. My disparate interests rarely align this well
Amazing to see ya won a game with the New York Jets, of all teams. The whipping boy of the NFL
Oh wait, it was the Giants, not the Jets. And knowing Carl Banks and Laurence Taylor were together as an OP duo alongside Joe Montana and Jerry Rice at the SF 49ers, it makes sense

Even though he wasn’t even mentioned, just seeing Tecmo Bowl being played made me smile with remembering how OP Bo is in it.
Two Hearts by Phil Collins at the start of the video? Yoo!
They're livin in just one mind, after all.
“Execute interceptions” is a very funny way of putting it. TSB taught me how the sport of football works in a very high level way, and I’ve been watching it ever since.

Of course you drop this while I have 3 work Meets in a row. Damn I can’t wait. Love your work and love Tecmo Bowl and old Tecmo games. 🍻
I played so much Tecmo Baseball, so this hits me right in the nostalgia. I usually played as N.Y. NM, their first pitcher was near unhittable.
The 1988 Mets won 100 games and the division behind the masterful pitching of Dwight 'Doc' Gooden, Ron Darling, and a young David Cone who went 20-3. They lost to the Dodgers in 7 games in the league championship series.
next week??? Grand finale??? i dont believe it :0
great episode as always, these are always fun and chill to watch :>
It's definitely a gag based upon the title of the game :P
@@JetstreamGW truly, the nes library has many games…
On top of what was mentioned it almost certainly a joke regarding the NES version of Ultima exodus since ultima is Latin for last
@@MrJWTH Yeah, that makes sense.
Can't believe they showed blood on that Famicom murder mystery baseball game
It was a Famicom game! Ironically, that market was like the wild west compared to the U.S.
Thanks for this! Spent countless hours with Tecmo Bowl and friends. Had no clue that fans were still modding it to this day.
I rented Tecmo Baseball one weekend when it was still fairly new, and I even back then I remember thinking it felt lazy that the exact same hit off the wall in centerfield happened multiple times a game. If they never made Tecmo Super Bowl, Tecmo Bowl would still be amazing, I remember playing my best friend and they were wars with him hahaha
It's weird watching these videos now that I've met Jeremy in person at RetroWorld Expo
Is it? I'm still the same person I was a week ago.
@@JeremyParish Fair enough.
How many TDs did I run home with Bo Jackson? So, so many. For a while all the kids in the neighborhood would play was Tecmo Bowl and Ninja Gaiden.
Lots of NES baseball games yet to come. Baseball Stars, Bad News Baseball, Roger Clemens' MVP Baseball, Base Wars...
I have lots of fond memories of those games.
Lots more?! I don't take kindly to threats, sir.
I'm looking forward to Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball. It's like the NES version of The Sandlot, and there's a surprise final "boss."
At least Base Wars stood out with a cool gimmick, with great graphics and music. Most of the rest were pretty forgettable tho.
The Baseball Stars games blew my mind the first time I saw them. RPG mechanics?? In my baseball game!?
@@Frigidevil A really fun baseball title was Baseball Simulator 1.000, which gave you normal baseball if you wanted it, but also a kind of super-power baseball in the Ultra league where players had special swings and pitches and each team had a number of "power points" to use during the game to activate the special powers. Sports titles are ignored and dismissed by the retro gaming community far too often.
Even when they do get attention, it's like, just NBA Jam and Tecmo Bowl.
Bless their hearts, hardcore gamers are nerds, and as Homer once said, there are two types of people in this world: jocks and nerds.
I love that people update the roster every year for Tecmo Bowl.
Great video! Hope you do one on Tecmo NBA Basketball as well! It wasn't quite as impactful as the Bowl series, but it was in my household.
I am no fan of football, but Tecmo Bowl absolutely delivered a game worth playing. The 2 player option was absolutely brilliant. The cheerleader images from Tecmo Bowl nearly made my Diet Coke come out through my nose 🤣
Who else remembers MST3K's Santa Claus Conquers the Martians where the Mads sacrificed all those copies of Tecmo Bowl to the Wish Squisher?
It's really weird to think of a time when Tecmo made some ace sports games
Thank you so much for bringing up the soundtrack for Tecmo baseball I don't really find the game that's fun to be honest when it comes to good baseball games but the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, Keiji Yamagishi killed it.
Tecmo Bowl is one of the few sports games for the NES that is fun to play, even for people like me who aren't interested in sports.

These are so much fun.
I forgot how hilarious the team logos on the helmets were
I just realized it IS Tecmo Super Bowl. I don't know who started it off or why but we all called it Super Tecmo Bowl at my school back in the day!
Please keep it up Jeremy. Your videos are excellent.

Loved these as a kid. Tecmo baseball - Detroit
Absolutely solid gold content
Tecmo sure had a wild company history over the years. And definitely looking forward to NInja Gaiden soon.
Did...did Jeremy just tease Ultima III?!
I've been waiting for this for as long as I was lost in Ambrosia as a kid. 😹
Most likely since I looked at a list of NES games and Ultima is the only one released in the relevant timeframe where the grand finale joke would make sense.

When i was a little kid in the 80s, tecmo bowl was everywhere. Most people and thier kids had it.
Tecmo baseball not so much 🙂
I never played Tecmo Bowl, but I do remember it being the top football game for the NES.
I played the second most popular... NES Play Action Football.
Not played these but great video as always 👍
Tecmo Bowl is the best football video game that ever been made of all time. 😀👍🏈🎮
TIL there were actually Tecmo Bowl games after the 16-bit era, one for the DS and one for XBLA/PSN/IOS!
I'm almost completely sure that in Tecmo Baseball, you had to hit up or down when swinging the bat if the ball was high or low.
Yes, you are correct
LT... unstoppable!

IMO the top tier is LA, SF, NY, and Chicago.
"Tecmo Bowl's CPU doesn't exactly play fair" - Epitaph for the game that (thanks to ROM hacks) still makes my blood boil,
I sure do love to root for the Washington Doubleyous or the Los Angeles Ellays 🎉 Go sports go

ANY TECMO BOWL FANS COME FIND US!
DRAFT LEAGUE, THEMED TOURNAMENTS ONLINE & IN PERSON.
PLAY AGAINST TOP PLAYERS IN THE WORLD!
Tecmo Bowl had the "Washington Football Team" before it was cool
Same great taste, zero racism
"meat-based competitors" 😆
I want to play Rygar for some reason.😉
my childhood
This reminds me, we should definitely have these Tecmo Bowl games re-released through a Compilation on modern systems! Who's with me!?
Tsuppari Ozumo & the SNES sequel are the tecmo bowl of sumo wrestling video games
they're really the only fun ones other than Sumo 64
Next episode is the finale based on the title? Could it be...Final Fantasy? 😜
In 1989?!
Ultima III makes more sense since it the NES version was released the same month these two were and Ultima means last in Latin.
Right genre, wrong game. Next episode is actually a game that was one of Final Fantasy's influences.
I genuinely feel sorry for everyone outside North America who didn't get into Tecmo Bowl because of cultural reasons. Way better than Speedball, for sure!
Maybe Tecmo is ready, but I gotta ask are you ready for some football ?
my older brother beat me every time using LA? i forget now too many years have passed but there was no beating bo jackson

There’s a baseball game with a murder mystery?
Commented.
Maybe it was Techmo Baseball
2 that had some of the most mind numbing music ever. Horrible like 12 second track.
The plural form of stadium is stadia
Shh, Google is still sensitive about that.
