@@jeannehannigan9719 how about banning the corrupt politicians too then spending $11B on a piece of junk rail nobody wants? This is disrespectful but in the grand scheme of things child's play compared to what is really wrecking Hawai'i.
These idiots made it hard for people that want to hike up there and respect the place…… Hopefully they get some jail time and local inmates know why they’re in jail…. lol……
It's not the hiking that anyone is worried about. It's all about if people get stuck and what it takes to rescue them. A simple sprained ankle now puts at least 6 people at risk because that person needs to be carried back down from wherever they are. Helicopter airlifts are also risky near mountains for a multitude of reasons. The stairs themselves are a horrible scar on the mountain's natural state.
@ I've personally hiked it dozens of times with friends and solo and with locals and Hawaiians and never once any issues. We always left it cleaner than we found it too malama aina always bringing rubbish down with us. These types of people have to ruin it for everyone good living aloha that's the reality.
Instead of saying could be charged the C&C HON needs to charge them and hand out a hefty fine for their action. These will send a clear message to others to think twice before making a decision about trespassing onto Stairway to Heaven.

Haiku stairs were basically destroyed by social media. If it weren't for social media the stairs would still be there and people would still enjoy them.
The City n State of Hawaii, needs to be like Arizona n have the individual pay for any rescue, property damages, any emergency responders bill if they get hurt in rescue attempt. Charge them the bill not the tax payers.
sadly, this kind of policy only increases the number of people who die, but not the people who will go anyway. Nobody every thinks they need to be rescued when they start out. "That warning isn't for me! I'm young and fit! I can handle myself!" Then slips on a step and gets a compound fractured tibia and simply being vertical is painful, and is losing blood at an alarming pace. That person might try to get down themselves and end up killing themselves.
It's disheartening to see such disregard for nature and public property. How Long Has The State Been Saying That They Gonna Shut It Down For Over Years Now! People Still No Learn I Hope Those People Never Come Back To Oahu Again.
Nah that’s not why it needed to be shut down.. literally could have charges everyone that went up a fee to maintain it and have everyone sign a waiver .. so no suing

NO, that is NOT a reason to shut them down. Someone needs to be removed from their position of authority for proposing simplistic solutions that punish a lot of people for what a tiny fraction do wrong.
People still go up that thing? That's the kind of "young and stupid" activity one does... right along with hiking to Sacred Falls when it's rainy and going to the Toilet Bowl. Guilty on all counts here haha.

So disrespectful.
Stupid is as stupid does. Posting videos have a 2 edge sword. This time you got busted. Good for the both of you.
Good! I enjoy hiking but it’s people like this that ruin it for everyone. Plus, how stupid to provide documentation of your own crime.
Jail time and fines is a start. Talk about no respect to the land.
They are outsiders with no respect. No probation, no suspended sentences. They should be jailed.
So, the insiders with no respect are OK?
AOC paid for their bail And is trying to get them off the island so they cannot be prosecuted. She said they were just hungry
The mayor said throwing it was unsafe, how bout saying its disrespectful and childish too?
