Mel Tucker, Michigan St. Saga Should Be a Cautionary Tale | Deion Wins Again, Changes Tune | Ep 519

  • “There are no good guys or girls in the Mel Tucker saga. None.” Following Michigan State’s rout on Saturday, the university announced it was suspending head coach Mel Tucker without pay pending an investigation of allegedly inappropriate sexual behavior with a rape survivor and sexual and domestic violence counselor once employed by the football team. Brenda Tracy charges Tucker initiated non-consensual phone sex, while Tucker alleges Tracy sought a “sugar daddy” relationship with him. Jason says in the aftermath of the Dr. Larry Nassar molestation tragedy, the atmosphere in East Lansing was charged to create the firestorm that will ultimately lead to Tucker’s dismissal. “The rise and fall of the Michigan State football coach is a story about the complicated and disingenuous relationships between brand-builders, influencers, billionaires, and institutions.” T.J. Moe and Steve Kim join “Fearless” to add their perspective on the matter. Plus, Steve and Jason hit the headlines from across college football’s second weekend, including Deion Sanders and Colorado remaining undefeated. Is Jason a believer in Coach Prime now? The jury is still out, but Whitlock says if Deion does sustain this success, there’s one person who deserves some credit.

TRT may not be a good thing. As you get older, and lose T, you get wiser and far less impulsive. To supplement T at that age and keep thinking like a 25 yo is all bad. The difference between Tuck and a 25 yo is the 25yo has time to recover in life.

The Nebraska score was misleading! The Nebraska defense kept the Colorado offense going three-and-out by playing excellent defense. Then came the missed field goal which would have given Nebraska a 3-0 lead. Then Sims kept dropping snaps to his hands, or having a snap hit the man in motion, throwing a stupid interception. 4 turnovers with three of them deep in Nebraska territory leading to Colorado scores. Eventually, the Nebraska defense was gassed and demoralized by a Nebraska offense that was moving the ball on Colorado and then turning it over left and right. Nebraska handed Colorado that game on silver platter!! If Nebraska doesn't shoot themselves on the foot, it could've easily been a 10-0 Nebraska lead, making it a much different game. Because, before the stupid turnovers began, the Colorado offense couldn't move the ball on the Nebraska defense at all!!! Once the defense got gassed due to the Nebraska offense handing the ball to Colorado repeatedly, the game completely changed!!

You're conflating individual accountability with family shame. Yes, Mel is responsible for his actions, and his wife and sons are not. That is true. However, the shame Mel has brought upon his wife and sons is the real tragedy. The shame that Mel was so attracted to another woman that he would commit an act that is lewd and lessens his wife's status as his object of desire. Perhaps you are capable of divorcing yourself from your husband's misdeeds. But most people, men or women, cannot. You're right again, Mel does have to answer to Jesus for his sins. also has to account for his wife and sons Christian led environment because Mel is the head of the family. Mel is responsible and will have to give an account for his own sin. If anyone asks her, “don’t you feel ashamed for what Mel did?” I would hope she would say, “no.” She can forgive him and stay in the marriage or she can forgive him and not stay in the marriage. I think this is a fairly decent take on the Tucker situation (especially by TJ Moe), with one big exception and a few smaller ones:
The assumption that there was overwhelming dissatisfaction with Tucker at MSU is not entirely correct.
Season 1- saying it’s “the Covid year”, should be enough, but he was a late hire, unable to bring in a recruiting class, and Dantonio had left the cupboard quite bare. He lost the first game of the season against Rutgers, which he should not have lost, but that was his first game of the first season with a new team, and he didn’t even get a spring practice season. All of the other weaker opponents canceled that year. He still had to play Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and Northwestern (who was the Big Ten west champion and ranked that year). He won two of those games. He lost to Indiana, but everyone forgets that Indiana actually finished ranked in the top 10 that year.
Year two-11-2 with a New Years 6 bowl win. Yes, he got lucky with Kenneth Walker in the portal, but there’s 30 other guys which get meaningful playing time on a football team. One guy doesn’t win 11 games. He was 11-2. At this point he was 2-0 against Michigan. LSU was looking for a new football coach (does anyone remember the last time LSU took an MSU head coach by offering more money? (Some guy named Saban).
So BIG money was necessary to retain him. Was it too much? Maybe.
Year 3-he goes 5-7, losing to Michigan, and several losses were simply embarrassing. But like I said above, Dantonio had left the cupboard quite bare, and Tucker had no chance to get a recruiting class for 2020 signing day. That combined with horrendous injuries (I think he had 25 different starters on defense due to injury, and only 7 O-linemen on the roster to start the season). There’s reasons for going 5-7 beyond his control, and that is well known internally. Through his recruiting and portal work, there is as much talent on this year’s MSU team as Dantonio has ever had. Plus, MSU is not Ohio State or SEC; there’s a tendency for a little more patience in East Lansing, where we haven’t had a national title in over 50 years, and haven’t really been all that close except maybe once.
So, I don’t think there was really a huge push to can Tucker prior to this bombshell.
The program is trending in the right direction, and looked set to be competitive in the Big Ten next season.
Was he paid too much? Most people would say yes, but I’m 100% certain this would have played out exactly the same way if he was making 4.5 million per year, a number which would be totally acceptable in the world of major college football.
Is the Larry Nassar situation in the back of everyone’s minds? Absolutely. That, and a few smaller sexual assault scandals at MSU in recent years. But that puts the university on high alert, so there’s no way they’re going to cover this up (BTN did a nice segment last night addressing they apparent delay in his suspension-fact is the administration didn’t know, and legally couldn’t know, the details until ESPN/USAToday broke the story).
Does race play into this? It always does, but MSU is about as Ibrim X Kendi “antiracist” as any university can possibly be. So if anything, Tucker has and will continue to receive preferential treatment because of his color, at least from the university side.
Finally, this will not end Tucker’s career. He will probably be fired from MSU, but I guarantee he will be on the sidelines as an assistant with an NFL team or an SEC team within two years, and making somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 to 2 million $ per year doing this.
So he can cry about the $9.5 million per year he’s losing, but he won’t be poor.
