As well as it not being a profitable business so it’s hard to maintain well trained carers. Safeguarding is a huge issue today I dread to think how horrifically lacking it was in the 50s & 60s. I live in a medium-sized city, and there isn't even ONE psychiatrist here! Not only is the city big enough to need & support multiple psychiatrists, but we are surrounded by smaller cities that have to come here for medical reasons and even just to go to Walmart... I don't know why we don't have one. We have psych nurses, but all they do is give antidepressants or medical M cards, which you can get from almost ANY doctor or nurse. I was just trying to get help for panic disorder & it was seriously one of the Circles of Hell, just trying to get a psych nurse with an IQ over 60. I guess it's just going to get worse from here. Maybe I should get the Medical M card so I'll be too blitzed to care.
I'm so close to my psych NP degree but the cost of everything and the medical field not supporting those of us that want to further our education is a major problem. We're talking about the 90s to 2000s the only people who had smart phones were the super rich. So that's kinda hard to throw someone born in the 90s in front of a smart phone at birth.
