    I caught a catfish once. We went for a drink and she looked nothing like her pics without the filters on so chucked her back in the river.

    You guys know I love Catfish! So I greatly appreciate this video! I'd just like to add a couple of things, I have been in some Catfish groups on social media and picked up quite a few things.. 1. The rods are more through action as well as of a higher test curve as you said, anything over 50lb's then carp gear can be ruined. Suitable reels really need to have rating of 15kg's front drag, Surf reels are very popular amongst Cat anglers. 2. And most important, thinking about the welfare of the fish, you shouldn't risk going in under gunned as it could be fatal! Obviously getting snapped up but if you don't get snapped up and you play the fish for too long the lactic acid builds up which you can see by the Cat turning pink, sometimes the fish won't recover from that, worth baring in mind when targeting these beasts! Cracking video guys as usual :)

  • @rmf574
    @rmf574 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Im glad you mentioned strong tackle, see too many people use weak gear for cats when its not acceptable. It puts the fish in danger and is just irresponsible. Another thing for anyone getting into catfish: do not use spod rods. They have no fighting action and trust me, they aren't as strong as you think. If you go catfishing use gear that can handle the biggest fish in the lake, dont just assume you won't hook a big one.

    • @snizdoc2302
      @snizdoc2302 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've landed good size cats on carp tackle. 12lb mainline and size 6 hooks. Anglers and danglers

    • @rmf574
      @rmf574 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@snizdoc2302 no doubt. its quite common to land decent cats on carp gear, it happened to me and got me into catfishing. The problem is when people target catfish fully but dont bother to use different gear. If you are targeting big cats, use gear that can handle it. I dont care how good of an angler you are, an 80lb cat going for a snag doesn't care about your 3lb carp rod. Ask any cat angler that fishes a lake with carp in it and they will tell you that stupid irresponsible carp anglers often get rigs stuck in cats mouths then get snapped off. Its not uncommon for cats to be caught with another rig in their mouth from a carp angler. We're all out there fishing, be responsible and look after what we all love, dont risk it just to be able to say you caught a cat on carp gear.

    Please guys if you’re going to go for catfish, use the adequate equipment for cats, just like you would do for carp, even thought catfish are predators they aren’t meant to have prolonged fights as they build up lactic acid and go pink, lots of cats to belly up because people play them for half hour (not all cats go belly up and some swim off and then die a few days later) just like you would for carp we want to look after these creatures, big catfish mat, rods 4.5 lb tc or more, appropriate reels with MINIMUM 25lbs mono or 80lb braid. They can be caught on lighter gear especially toddlers up to 50lbs but once you hook a bigger one it’s different and it’s always good to look after the fish’s welfare. Land it quickly, chin it out get a few quick pics and then let it be on its way! They are an incredible species❤

    Is there any hard fast rules on location and bait presentation like in Carp fishing ie do you have to scan the water for showing fish or present your bait on a gravel bottom as opposed to silt?
    Is it better to fish the margins or open featurless water or do cats prefer snags and cover the same as carp do?
    Thanks in advance and all the best.

    • @fishingtutorials
      @fishingtutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yeah we tend to find catfish often holding in snaggy areas although it’s not worth hooking them in very cluttered areas as snags will reduce your chances of landing fish. We’ve caught a few catfish from the side of lilly pads before especially when there’s lots of small bait fish around them. If you can find the shoals of roach or other small fish then there’s likely to be catfish around!
      We haven’t found catfish to be too fussy about the lake bed, but areas clear of weed will be easier to present your rigs over!

    I want to try this but I only have one rod that could handle a big fish , it’s a bait casting setup , 7ft 3 heavy/extra heavy , shimano multiplayer, 50lb braid , I use it for pike fishing with big swim baits , would my big pike fishing setup be suitable?

    The catfish in my area in NJ on the Delaware river are not like those. Yours look like a cross between a catfish and a snakehead. Ours have a normal dorsal fins and normal tails. How many different types of catfish do you have near you?

      Hi Dave, I'm from the UK. These are Wels Catfish and grow in excess of 150kg in some places. They're absolute monsters. We only really have the one species and that's enough for us! We mostly like carp and pike (Northern Pike to you lot). All the best!

    Just saw this video here in the US. Does the UK have any public places where you can catch wild fish? Where I live, we have tons of catfish in our rivers. However, they don't get nearly as big as the wells. I usually catch them by catching some small bait fish, and cutting them up for bait. Is that legal in the UK?

      You can buy a variety of what we call "deadbaits" in the UK at most tackle stores. Mackerel, smelt, eel, herring etc. They're most for pike and zander. Catfish in the UK is mostly fished with boilies and pellets. I do sometimes see mackerel being used for them too though. Very much legal. The only issue is you have to pre-buy your fish, not catch and then use the stocked fish as bait.

    Wait there are actually places you can fish for catfish in uk? I've been fishing for catfish for most of my life as my hometown is a 10 min walk to the Danube so this is great news for me. Great video guys now its time to plan a fishing trip. Also if i may add the absolute best bait for catfish are mole crickets. Even in the worst fishing sessions I would always get a bite on them bad boys
