Philip from Overlord is one of the best examples I have ever seen in anime of the Dunning Kruger Effect ,"an effect that occurs when a persons lack of knowledge and skills in a certain area that causes them to overestimate their own competence".
It's interesting because the closest character to Phillip is Ainz. The only thing that really differentiates them is that Ainz is aware of his own incompetence.

Ainz is a man who overthinks everything to the point where him attempting a single small victory ends up with a massive success. Phillip is a man who underthinks everything to the point where him attempting a single small victory ends up with genocide.
@@TheHICking I think they meant underthinking by not looking at the big picture. That the relationship between the two kingdoms was unstable at best, that the sorcerer kingdom was not one to overlook even the slightest of slights against them, and that his singular small victory would be the tiny spark needed to ignite the powder keg.
Yeh but I find it funny how in anime series there is never any nuance. Characters are always overly genius and come up with stuff no other person has came up with (even if it is obvious) or they are retards. Like Philip for example, it is easy to twist it in bad light. But in many other animes his character would be a genius (probably even in overlord of they wanted it). Like the whole revising the economy of his region or growing different crops is classical in anime for genius world builders. And here it is portrayed as if Philip is power hungry and his quest to making his region important instead of coming to terms with his place in society is ridiculed. Yet the same stuff done by Ainz is seen as genius.
It's a whatchamacallit..."Achievement in Ignorance". When someone succeeds at something everyone assumes is impossible simply because they don't know that so they give it a try anyway and it happens to work out despite the odds.
@@LordEmperorBoss True, just as Demiurge more or less has said: "A little more intelligent person's actions are often easier to predict than that of a stupid person." Imagine a card game where your success depends purely on your tactic skills. Now take two people with the same cards on both sides - one intelligent and one even more intelligent. The more intelligent person looks at his cards and thinks "That strategy would be most effective so the other person is going to play it so I will play objectively worse move but effective against that best possible play." Then the second a little less but still intelligent person plays the best move and loses the game. Now we flip the scenario and the same very intelligent person plays against a dumb person. Intelligent person plays the same weaker move effective against the best one and the dumb person does some other out of the pocket move that I.P. was totally unprepared for and the intelligent person loses. It's because intelligent person will choose to do the best most logical thing that can be predicted with enough knowledge and intelligence, but a stupid person will do basically stupid stuff that you can't predict without knowing this person intricately. You could describe it as Intelligent person does things logically and stupid person does things however he feels like doing. I.P.: "Hm I don't have knowledge on this topic and even though that what you are saying is matching with my established opinion I firstly need to research the topic before I do anything or else I may make a mistake." @Crauce Very wrong. Momonga is actually very intelligent; what he lacks is a sense of grand strategy. He can read people exceptionally well, and his grasp of both battle strategy and overall tactics is peerless. @Crauce They might start in the "same" place, but Philip is convinced of his greatness and has all the narcissism of a gem mine billionaire rich kid. The main point is that all those are humans who just overheard it. Even if they believe the report world for world, hearing "This undead casted one spell and killed 180000 people" and seeing that happen are two very different things
On the contrary, momonga is so far outside of normal expectations that it's weirder to believe the rumors. The same thing happened after Hiroshima. No one could believe a single bomb destroyed a city, prompting the need for the second nuke.

Oh poor Philip. You are the only person in the whole overlord world to make the genius albedo use every bit of her intellect to use it to torture you. I guess you got what you wanted, albedo all to yourself With your father's blessing nonetheless
Philip is actually a very interesting foil to Ainz. He shows that Demiurge and Albedo have a consistent blindspot; and that blindspot is a true fool. It should call into question for Demiurge and Albedo that perhaps the reason they can't read Ainz despite being able to read any other being (even each other) isn't because he is so far beyond them but because they are so far beyond Ainz. The fact that they don't shows their absolute devotion and belief in Ainz.
Well, another difference is that Ainz is self-aware enough to realize that he isn’t the smartest person in the room. So, he takes extra precautions, assembles strategies, and actually practices his king craft to improve himself. Phillip is so dumb he thinks he’s already perfect and that nobody could possibly be smarter or more talented.
Yes but ainz recognizes his faults and works to improve himself while Phillip ignorantly believed he was some super genius that couldn’t possibly make a mistake, much like how ainz’s subordinates view ainz himself. While your point still stands, this trait is the key difference that sets them apart.
While your theory are cool i think it simply because ainz or any ainz guild member is on completely different realm. While albedo and demiurge is creation, ainz and his guildmate is the creator The creation will never understand what their creator thinks or do just like humans will never truly understood their god/creator intentions and only try to guess
Ainz in several occasions have told Albedo and Demigure that they are smarter than him but they still take it as him being too humble or a Test for them. lmao

About 8 months later, during the Christmas party, he got drunk and admitted that he was the one who had vandalized company property instead of his friend. Human stupidity knows no bounds lol.
I haven't read the Light Novels, but I do think this says a lot about Philip's father and his priorities. Now, at some point in the Cut Content series, they mention how Philip was the "spare of the spare" in his family, meaning that he was born purely as a backup if something happened to his older siblings. If both of his brothers hadn't died, then Philip would have just been a farmer for the rest of his life. This tells me that Philip's father didn't feel the need to teach Philip any real or practical life lessons or how to behave in nobel society or any leadership skills when he was a child. This lack of early teaching and, what I'm assuming is an inferiority complex brought on by the neglect lead to an uneducated fool trying to prove himself. Philip's father essentially didn't have the foresight to educate Philip early on, and it came to bite him in the a*s later. He tried nothing and then wished for pain on the son he failed from the start.

My favorite part is how the floor guardians reasoned how Ains understands the minds of geniuses and fools. Quickly switching when Ains suggested it that it was actually more likely and is in fact correct 🤣
There is some genuine merit to the idea though. These may come from seemingly completely disconnected sources, but I'm reminded of two different quotes about this kind of thing. The first comes from fighting games and is said as a kind of joke phrase to justify playing mindlessly and without a plan and goes something like "But you see, my opponent can't predict what I'm going to do next if even I don't know what I'm going to do next!" The second is...I think it's a quote by Mark Twain that goes like "Never argue with a fool. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." The point behind both is that the mind of an idiot is in some ways impervious to being understood by those with more logical or rational minds because an idiot doesn't have a functioning level of rationality to begin with. The more you try to use reason and logic to understand why an idiot does something the harder it becomes to actually understand the idiot's actions because their actions aren't fueled by "normal" reason or logic. Said more simply, the more you try to think about why they do what they do the less likely you are to actually be correct. And that's why they see Ainz's statement as some kind of galaxy-brain level of omnipotent wisdom - because Ainz is (in their eyes) seemingly capable of logically understanding something that, by it's nature, defies the concept of logic.
@@reperfan4 in terms of fighting games... morons usually push the same pattern of buttons over and over most of the time subconciously even if it's a little wild. wich makes it easy to exploit. it's really really rare to see someone so moronic that his brain completely forgoes any pattern and truelly do random attacks. and i agree that it would be a nightmare to fight not knowing he would do that
Funny thing while watching this vid, I actually got captivated by Vianney character than the explanation of Phillip's so called "geniunes". Why? Cause i want food and clout" Phillip should write Art of War 2
Reading this part of the novel was both wonderful and extremely painful. It's rare to read a "dumb character" by design, not by lack of writing skill, similar to Mercedes "lawful stupid" paladin but to the extreme. I understand that in a world lacking in communication and information preservation, hearing that a man was able to kill 100k soldiers with a single spell would be something that people wouldn't accept as truth unless they were witness themselves (I believe a seer of the theocracy went full Hikikomori after seeing that), but the fact that Phillip decided to touch the lion's tail after knowing that a HUGE part of their nobility and manpower was killed was amazing by itself. The man truly needs more representation in the world, the mand made such a big mistake that he deserves to be immortalized in that world history, call it "Phillip's Brainrot Folly" or something.
The detail that got me laughing so much on the floor, was that Phillip father before Albedo killed him and everyone else, he asked her to make Phillip suffer as much they did

Only the greatest mind in the kingdom could rationalize all these things into one cohesive grand plan. Also he has courage approaching a freaking demon and immediately courting her. Though stupidity is often mistaken for bravery.
Vianney may have lead to the demise of his Kingdom but much like Zannac he did what he did not for ego but to better his domain and his people while truly earning his place as a noble. It's too bad he and Philip had not considered the Sorcerer Kingdom was looking for an excuse to declare war on Re-Estize nor that their downfall was inevitable by the hands of their Princess.
Ah yes, the character that makes even a brick look like a brilliant strategist. It still amuses me how he caused so much damage and death by being himself. Even his father tried to call him out on his dumb idea's, but considering he was the best that they had at the moment in that family he would have to do unfortunately.
My favorite part of the entire deal is that his father's last request is simply to make use of him, because no one in the kingdom ever could and he wants him to be useful for SOMETHING before he dies. Also might be a slight bit of knowing that this monster in front of him can come up with all manner of suffering that far exceeds anything his can imagine, so a taste of that will be enough revenge for ending the kingdom. And a taste was all she planned, originally. But his dad did ask her to make use of him, so just dying is not useful enough. Also his breakdown at the end may have pissed her off even further, if that was possible.
Wait, so the people managing the food only lost because they were more intelligent that they just left and game Phillip the food. That makes it even more hilarious.
I must say, Christopher really was searching for every possible scenario that could be happening prior to take action. That is indeed a great factor to have as a leader, issue is that you do need to make other plans too. Then again due to what the case actually was and who was actually on each side (one side had an overwhelming power compared to other) it was clear he would win against this force. I've been thinking what they could've done about this problem, since they can't win on price or supply against Ainz, maybe they could've tried to spread rumors about Ainz food supply to create untrust on his products?
To be fair the game world clearly didn't have a good macro balance of power system(to make the nations act like real world nations), as declaring war over a single act of banditry wouldn't be seen as anything but a land grab, and lead to multiple nations joining to whack down the belligerent state that has been growing way too fast. Thus yes subtlety sponsoring banditry should have worked and after Phillip is handed over or imprisoned for banditry you hire better bandits.

It makes total sense that Phillip basically outsmarted Ainz. There's an old saying: "Never underestimate the stupidity of a true idiot." This is why the idea of something being "foolproof" is BS. They taught us this in my Engineering course. Because no matter what you do, you can't predict what an idiot will do.
I guess it really was a loss for the Sorcerer Kingdom, since no one really didn’t expect anyone to do something so stupid and had overthought about. Of course phillip did only hear of Ainz’s power through hearsay and not witnessing it from any resigned re-estize soldiers, which is another reason why he’s considered useless by not actually taking any of it seriously like his father did. Phillip destroyed an entire kingdom, and not only that but he also managed to defeated and entire mercenary group that was working for the enemy kingdom without lifting a finger and with just 50 village outcasts without any fighting experience whatsoever. 🙌🏾🙌🏾
The part of Philip's plan that threw me off was why rob the sorcerer kingdom when you could burn the buildings around their warehouse and set the whole stockpile on fire. It would look like an accident and keep them from attacking.
Robbing a carriage gives deniability, as if anyone asks they could claim it was an enemy faction or kingdom. Phillip being a dumb idiot and getting seen screwed that deniability .
Is there any more detail given about Philip's fate in the LN, cuz the show said he was going to be used like a test dummy for new torture techniques but I'm not sure if more detail exists?
on one hand Albedo took him being the reason she got scolded personally: "The villagers had all been impaled. Men, women, old, or young were all impaled on stakes. Not a single one of them was spared. All of them were impaled from the rectum to the mouth. All of them told of their sufferings through their expressions, no exceptions. Blood spilt out from every orifice and puddles of blood formed at the base of the stakes." on the other hand he got to hold hands with her: ""His vision was blurred by his tears, yet Philip still punched towards Albedo’s face. However, his fists were easily caught mid-air, and then- “Hiyaaaaah!!” A force strong enough to crush bones was applied to his fist, which began to make crunching sounds. “...If you just walk, I will not crush your hands, how about that?”" so, worth it. maybe. except for Albedo promising Phillips father that she would make sure he felt everybodys pain, that'd likely be unpleasant.
Honestly the entire conquest of the nearby countrys was just a series of misunderstandings, luck, idiots attacking Ainzs minions, and Ainz not fully understanding how absolutely terrifying he his to talk to. Every time he goes for a walk someone surrenders

Thats the thing though- Phillip isn't an idiot. His plan was elegantly simple and well executed. It took advantage of his own authority and connections and leveraged the tenuous position of his quarrel to sow doubt and force their surrender. The problem was that Phillip's intelligence, his knowledge of Ains's values and personality, was sorely lacking. Phillip should have done some reckon on the sorceror king to gauge what kind of reaction a petty defeat would ellicit from this fledgling tyrant.

Philip from Overlord is one of the best examples I have ever seen in anime of the Dunning Kruger Effect ,"an effect that occurs when a persons lack of knowledge and skills in a certain area that causes them to overestimate their own competence".

Ainz is a man who overthinks everything to the point where him attempting a single small victory ends up with a massive success.
Phillip is a man who underthinks everything to the point where him attempting a single small victory ends up with genocide.
Was the goal to commit genocide? How does Someone even do that by underthinking
@@TheHICking apperantly if you are Phillip anything is possible. Every negative outcome that is.
@@TheHICking I think they meant underthinking by not looking at the big picture.

It’s actually a proverb that a Genius’s greatest weakness is the idiot because a genius can never predict the actions of an idiot.

While albedo and demiurge is creation, ainz and his guildmate is the creator
The creation will never understand what their creator thinks or do just like humans will never truly understood their god/creator intentions and only try to guess
All I'm saying is that Ainz is not an idiot. He is actually very intelligent and very careful about everything he does.
Ainz in several occasions have told Albedo and Demigure that they are smarter than him but they still take it as him being too humble or a Test for them. lmao
I still love the fact Philip got that far because his sheer stupidity made him so unpredictable.
as they say: if you don't know what you're doing, your enemy will not either

“If we don’t know what we are doing, the enemy certainly can’t anticipate our future actions!”

About 8 months later, during the Christmas party, he got drunk and admitted that he was the one who had vandalized company property instead of his friend. Human stupidity knows no bounds lol.
I love the fact that Philips own father asked Albedo to make sure he suffered just as much as they did.
I find it sad

The first comes from fighting games and is said as a kind of joke phrase to justify playing mindlessly and without a plan and goes something like "But you see, my opponent can't predict what I'm going to do next if even I don't know what I'm going to do next!"
The second is...I think it's a quote by Mark Twain that goes like "Never argue with a fool. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."
The point behind both is that the mind of an idiot is in some ways impervious to being understood by those with more logical or rational minds because an idiot doesn't have a functioning level of rationality to begin with.

Even vids with topics im not super interested in, I know I'll see a clear, thorough, and easy to follow video. Its kinda inspiring, thanks for the content over the years.
Thank you so much for this overlord vidoes I genuinely love how much in detail you go into and learning even more about the anime makes me love it even more
Phillip has a power similar to King’s from One Punch Man. They power to to be so stupid that everyone thinks he’s playing 4-D chess with them
Yep, the only difference being that King is fully aware the the absurdists scenarios he finds himself in, whereas Phillip is beyond immersed in his delusions
@@masternoob9673 KING even told everyone that he was powerless and actually tried to learn martial arts, but they all thought that he was too humble and that it was useless for HIM to learn any martial art as he was already extremely strong
So essentially Phillip was just an idiot, who got Lucky Mutiple Times, & only lived as long as he did because people overestimated him....
He was also drunk when he made this plan, which didn't help.
FINALLY!!!! I was waiting for another video on literally ANYTHING from you 💛
Video Idea: Why Overlord is the Perfect Anime for a Game
If done right of course
As a low level serf of Ainz who has a hidden ability to "read minds" and thereby hear the Ainz internal monologues.
@@allmight9840 probably not gonna work as undead are immune to mental effect (not WI effect though)
There is a game. It's called Mass for the Dead.
@@Miranox2 but it shut down and isn’t playable
As an anime only person, from the moment he touched Albedos arm I knew there would be a whole aninews on this man’s suffering 😂😂😂😂
His own FATHER suggest Phillip be torture-killed?! I definitely got the sense that their relationship was strained based on his anime appearance but damn. But in a way, I think it helps make his ultimate fate all the more delicious like I knew That Phillips is doomed from the start after seeing how angry Albedo was for Phillips touching her and as gruesome and nightmarish must have that scene Philip witnessed outside his house, i cant help but feel satisfied for him to realize how F***d he was thinking so little of Nazarick. He even outplayed the smartest beings of Nazarick by being stupid lmao.
0:30 “new form of exciting gameplay” I can concur I’ve seen the gameplay and it was quite “exciting”.
Yes, definitely something to brag about...
He was a representation of the failures of the Kingdom's nobility.
12:03 I imagine the next few frames look like the interior of a blender.
Albedo : Your Father give me a Blessing
Philip : Such a Permission wasn't-
Albedo : *To Torture You That is*
With one side playing chess, and the other checkers. Philip decided he was just going to eat one of the enemy's pieces.
The only thing that is more unfathomable than nazarick's combined power is this man's mental capacity.
Imagine how excited he would be upon hearing how "impactful" he was. He would probably get so excited he would click away from the video and delve into a tirade of self gratification.
It makes total sense that Phillip basically outsmarted Ainz. There's an old saying: "Never underestimate the stupidity of a true idiot."
This is why the idea of something being "foolproof" is BS.
He may have won a small victory, but that victory came with immense consequences that phillip didn’t take into account.
Phillip, the only new worlder to ever pull an Ainz
And Enri is the first new worlder to know know the struggle of acting like a ruler
"Everyone must bow down to the incredible intellect of Phillip-sama". Truly worthy of a Royalty.!
9:32 That actually a crescent formation this was famously used by Hannibal against the Romans at the battle of Cannae!
Mans so incredibly unpredictable, so much of a wild card
That even the minds of Nazaricks finest, Demiurge and Albedo couldn't tell what he will do next!!
It's a damn shame we never got to see the mythical crane wing formation animated in all its true glory.
Day 65 of asking for a grand assassin Hassan servant review
You want to see another horrendous CG because that's how you get another horrendous CG
The anime didn't elaborate details and cut contents pretty sporadically that reading the novel really blew my mind
Yes we've been waiting for this I was thinking you forgot about it 😂😂
You have to be a Rick and Morty fan to understand Phillip's genius
I felt like i missed a good 1-2 eps listening to this, because you show a lot of mixed anime scenes to conjure what feels like what happened during the convoy raid, complete with battle formations, thought processing, who were guarding the convoy, etc., when all I actually saw in the anime was the idiot saying at the tavern "I've got an idea--3 birds with one stone" then the next scene was albedo being handed a report about a convoy raid
Phillip destroyed an entire kingdom, and not only that but he also managed to defeated and entire mercenary group that was working for the enemy kingdom without lifting a finger and with just 50 village outcasts without any fighting experience whatsoever. 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Truly a man worthy of competing against Ainz Sama's intelligence
Philip was the only character close to matching Ainz's big brain tactics.
What's disappointing is Overlord season 4 could've done a few episodes fleshing out Phillip's Storyline.
Wait, THAT'S what happened?! That's legendary!
The part of Philip's plan that threw me off was why rob the sorcerer kingdom when you could burn the buildings around their warehouse and set the whole stockpile on fire.
It would look like an accident and keep them from attacking.
Depending on where their warehouse is that could be a very easy way to set a town on fire. Fire likes to burn things.
@@bemusedbandersnatch2069 plausible deniability.
Robbing a carriage gives deniability, as if anyone asks they could claim it was an enemy faction or kingdom. Phillip being a dumb idiot and getting seen screwed that deniability .
Is there any more detail given about Philip's fate in the LN, cuz the show said he was going to be used like a test dummy for new torture techniques but I'm not sure if more detail exists?
on one hand Albedo took him being the reason she got scolded personally:
"The villagers had all been impaled. Men, women, old, or young were all impaled on stakes. Not a single one of them was spared. All of them were impaled from the rectum to the mouth. All of them told of their sufferings through their expressions, no exceptions. Blood spilt out from every orifice and puddles of blood formed at the base of the stakes."
on the other hand he got to hold hands with her:
""His vision was blurred by his tears, yet Philip still punched towards Albedo’s face. However, his fists were easily caught mid-air, and then- “Hiyaaaaah!!” A force strong enough to crush bones was applied to his fist, which began to make crunching sounds. “...If you just walk, I will not crush your hands, how about that?”"
so, worth it. maybe.
except for Albedo promising Phillips father that she would make sure he felt everybodys pain, that'd likely be unpleasant.
Anos Voldigoad:
I'm Pretty Sad For this Guy for His Sheer Insanity
nice video i love overlord
Honestly the entire conquest of the nearby countrys was just a series of misunderstandings, luck, idiots attacking Ainzs minions, and Ainz not fully understanding how absolutely terrifying he his to talk to. Every time he goes for a walk someone surrenders
So basically Philip is like Ainz, he just doesn't have a loyal unbeatable genius level crew who believed in his apparent cunning
Visual ASSets ASSencuated. NICE
Despite Phillip being him I can’t help but feel sorry (somewhat) for the fate he meets with albedo
The moment after Philip attacked the convey he was walking around dead and didn’t know it until that fateful night.
Summing up how everyone saw Philip in this entire operation: "I don't know if he's a genius or a moron"
i like how he uses clips from other animes too, it's kinda nice
wuuu lets go baby a Phillip center episode 200 IQ 10 thousand year plan of being the undefeated so-called "dumbass" that was able to score a W on the sorcerer kingdom surely his balad will be sung for the millennias to come
Personally I think the best missed content and I'm assuming it wasnt put in the anime because of how Demiurge brutally kills the holy queen is the destruction of the northern part of the holy kingdom and the death of the holy queen 😳 well he did say he was looking for a weapon and found said weapon.
Probably he's the one who most offended the name of Ainz Ooal Gown
But it's not like he will ever realize it
Thankyou I have been waiting for this
Wait, so first he guns for Albedo and then Princess Renner, this guy really has doesnt have a clue...
0:45 Complemented nicely by visual ASSets!...
They cut the scene where Philip was punching Albedo’s face while being dragged to his demise to give Renner a Disney song.
