It's not giving something away, it's the realization that it's in our own best interest that people are safe, happy and healthy which includes giving them pancakes so you can party with them the rest of the day giving you that much joy in return. If people realized that helping others can be done from a purely selfish perspective it becomes so much easier to understand things like a public health care option, financial reform etc.
Gifting is great as long as the giftees realize they need to give just as much as they get. This only works for a while until all the gifts are handed out and nobody wants to give up what they have. Just as the guy said on the video, absolutely impractical, but fun for a week. Nice experiment in hunting/gathering.
