That’s great, as you mount this you’ll see how thick this solid fiberglass hull is. Will you use backing plates our large washers as you mount it; my Monitor seems pretty heavy? You’ll be spending some time in the lazarette, seems like you’ll have to climb into access back of the bolts. This should be a good video, I’m looking forward to it.
Wow, you get a decent amount of boat for not too much money... probably good to buy a neat basic boat and add the additional things yourself. Great Boat
That is a great “go anywhere” boat. It’ll bring you home safe every time. I crewed with my friend on his 28’ Dory for ten years in some hairy conditions which scared the bejebus out of me, but the boat never faulted. The tradeoff for the stability and sea-worthiness is in the performance, particularly in light conditions. I could run circles around him in my Bristol 25, itself a heavy boat for its size. Good sailing in her, sir! And thank you for your entertaining videos. Don’t ever lose your optimistic outlook!
About 15 years ago my wife and I had a Cal 25’. Watching your videos in a small way let’s us relive our adventures on the Cal. And Sailboat adventures are pretty primal and unforgettable. It’s an indescribable feeling as you know. Thanks for posting.
nice choice sam. the anchor is perfect. you need a SECOND anchor, not a 'bigger' one...make sure to have at least 100 feet of 5/16 chain, and you will anchor safely in 20-25 feet of water by just clearing your chain below the waterline...in deeper water, your nylon 'rode' should not go to the bottom and chafe. i wouldn't move the swim step, especially if you are going to the caribbean...you will love it. a 'soft ladder' on the side is ok, but difficult for many people to board, and very difficult with dive gear or in seas. the swim step is one of the coolest things about that boat...along with the 'tiller pilot' set up...you just need sufficient power to run it. the bimini is KEY to tropical enjoyment, and YES you will want a dodger after beating in the carib for a season. what a move up from the ranger 23 huh? hahahhahaha. go get em sam...you got a good boat.
Always liked the look of those 28's. Nice size for the way you like to sail. I spent 9 years sailing my 34ft sloop from New Zealand to California. The anchor was no larger than your boat has now and only 10 meters of chain. I spent a lot of time swinging on the hook. Never had a problem. I did have a larger CQR below that never got used. If you're anchoring around coral, just shorten up enough to get the rope portion up above the coral. The anchor will hook up to the coral and hold the boat even with a short ratio. If you're in big winds and need a higher ratio rhode/depth, the wind will push the boat back enough to keep the chain up off the bottom. Less chain weight up in the bow with help with pitching motion. Especially in heavier seas. A dodger is always a good thing when you're off shore. Allows companionway hatch to be open in rain or spray.
You are living my dream.! Here I am at the ripe young age of 52 jammin' to some Jimmy Buffet and not quite understanding why I am not in your hush puppies! However, tomorrow is the Labor Day Weekend Show... Lol. seriously though, I retired early and entertain sailing abroad every day of the week that happens to end in "y." Diggin' Your videos! I certainly appreciate your fundamental educational videos. There's a "boatload" of us 50 somethings that retired a little early because we wish to live the "good life" before we hit our 60's. Enough said.
Congratulations Sam! you have bought a wonderful boat and I wish you many great sails and miles under the keel. I have owned CD28 #289 for 32 yrs. here on the Chesapeake. So many great memories! Yours has much of what I added over the years. The Freshwater cooled Yanmar is a big advantage over the original volvo md7a's. Have fun hanging inverted in the locker repacking the stuffing box...tie off the hatch, it can close and lock on you in an empty boatyard......looking forward toyour videos.
Happy for you Sam! She’s beautiful. I sail a 27’ Cascade up here in the Puget Sound and find that I love this size boat. Looking forward to the future adventures! Cheers from the Pacific Northwest! 🍻
As someone who only just got recommended your channel (random TH-cam algorithm shenanigans) it's really interesting going back and seeing things from when you first got Pickled Herring.
It's good to see that you're fine James doing great to he got a book done and he's doing great but it's good to see that you're fine and you found a new boat it looks great lot of Headroom anyway good luck and hope to see you again soon.
Congrats on the new purchase. Happiest days in a sailor's life is buying a boat and then getting rid of it. Looks like someone modified the head compartment and removed the lavatory sink in favor of those two lockers. On earlier CD28s, they had a slide out lavatory sink in a box that slid out over the head watercloset. On the stbd. side was a hanging locker. Later models moved the hanging locker over the WC on the port side, and put a nice lavatory sink and base cabinet on the stbd. side. Great boat and certainly capable of long travel.
I found your video when you were on your way to Hawaii, I was able to catch your live video when you were in Hawaii I enjoy your videos .congratulations on the new boat looking forward to new videos thanks again from Peoria Illinois.
Many, many years ago (early 90s), my first sailing experience was on a Cape Dory 28 in Long Island Sound. My old PhD thesis adviser had one for 20+ years and he took me and a friend out for a nice afternoon cruise. I remember asking him why he chose this boat and he responded that it was big enough for most water/weather, but not too big to single-hand... simple, sturdy and not so fancy that he'd have to spend all of his time keeping up with teak and varnish and not sailing. Seemed like a perfect little fun boat for day or weekend sailing and just being out on the water. I'm subscribing, just to enjoy that memory and catch future videos of the boat on the water. Thanks for sharing your adventure. :D
Congrats on the new boat! Nice choice! Had the same problem with the mainsail getting caught up on the lazy jacks. I found putting some slack into the lazy jacks fixed the problem. Fair winds SV Lola
Great choice of boat!! I have hull #2, which we're refitting for a trip to Bermuda and eventually across the Atlantic. Do take a good look at the chainplates, we're in the middle of a replacing ours and they were a serious mess-literally corroded to pieces. Enjoy getting to know the boat, we love ours!!
Second video watched and I'm excited to watch more. Your LA to Hawaii video hit my random feed - I sail up here in the Chesapeake - and I'm planning to watch all of your library.
absolutely fantastic boat. owned one for four years. sailed out of gig harbor. did inside passage 3 times. best spot to anchor Foggy Bay outside of Ketchikan Alaska.
Congratulations on your new boat. Glad to see you’re getting another boat. I really liked your videos on your trip to Hawaii. I’m looking forward to seeing your posts from the East Coast and the Atlantic. Take care Sam and good luck and good times in the Caribbean.
Nice boat, really good size & some great attributes for long distance sailing, she'll carry you wherever you want to go in relative comfort & what a world of difference the extra 5 feet makes. Fair winds & looking forward to following your further adventures. My Bowman 26 is similar in design, selection criteria same as yours really as I have ambitions for some longer distance sailing as well...
I didn't see this vid before (tour of your new boat) but it looks like a great sail boat, nice & spacious, and has alot of extra conveniences, like the roller jib, bimini, good air & hatches, sleeps four, and diesel power. Way to go!!
Congratulations. The Cape Dory 28 is a fine sailboat. If it is going to be your last boat, pull off EVERY fitting that penetrates the deck. The drill out (inspect), fill with glass and the red roll and re-bed. The inevitable leak will not damage the core.
genuinely more excited about you in this boat than whatever Disney has to offer
Me too but I gotta pay for that wind vane somehow.
Did you find a windvane yet?
@@richkallerud2781 I found a used windpilot. Will be installing it soon!

This channel is going to blow up once you start posting regularly again. Looking forward to following your travels Sam!
You were right.
@@jonathanwilson4486 I concur

Flying Fish 😍
You should read his book. Good reads.
Seen it last night and this popped up.lol My uncle has a 36 Dory, wow just wow.
Really happy for both of us. For you cause you got your new bigger sail boat and for me cause I get to watch many more Captain Sam videos. Win...Win

Love those full keel Cape Dory’s. Sailed the Caribbean in my 22’ Dory. A super strong boat for open water sailing.
About 15 years ago my wife and I had a Cal 25’. Watching your videos in a small way let’s us relive our adventures on the Cal. And Sailboat adventures are pretty primal and unforgettable. It’s an indescribable feeling as you know. Thanks for posting.
I am very happy you got this boat!
It’s much much better boat.
A much better match for you!
Congratulations!
Congrats on the new boat! May she treat you well and keep you safe on the water.
Love that boat, great pick!
nice choice sam.

I had a Cape Dory 22 years ago.. Alberg boats are built like tanks! Enjoy the new boat
I think this is the perfect boat for you! The full keel should track really well on long passages. Enjoy & fair winds!
Full keel definitely the way to go! Ahoy! Cheers! :)
I bought a Cape Dory 28 six months ago, but I need to wait until the end of winter to work on it. Looking forward to following your videos.
I was thinking this looked pretty similar to the Swedish Fish, and then you went under. Holy cow! Looks great man, congrats!
Totally. A few extra feet adds adds a ton more interior volume.
Wow, as I was watching that ranger 23 and you otw to Hawaii, I thought..he needs a Dory. And bam.
yeah, I was thinking then google the 23, guess it was designed for that, well maybe not that much ocean but it made it :-)
Looks like you got a good deal on your new sailboat. I've been watching all of your sailboat videos and this is where I'm at the moment.
That's a beautiful boat, man. I could totally live on that. Good for you!
Oh, watched already this gentleman sailing from California to Hawaii.
So cool to have you back in a sailboat! The dingy building was very fun too!!! Thanks Sam!

9 years from new Zealand to cali??
Didnt you had any wind?
9 years is a long time for this route
That boat is a solid piece of work. I used to sell them. Very nice purchase.
Outstanding! Congratulations on your new ship!
Nice boat. I like how you're always smiling. But then again, you're always on a sailboat in these, so I get why. Fair winds.
That’s an awesome boat Sam! Congrats!
I’ve heard good things about the cape dory. The 28 is one of the models I’m looking into. Nice to see you doing your thing. Cheers.
