- This video will show you an easy inexpensive way to seal and varnish your acrylic paintings.
Tools needed:
Clean old t-shirt scrap piece
Baby wipes
Gloves
Liquitex High Gloss Varnish
Water
Clean your canvas with a baby wipe before applying varnish. I mixed 3 oz of Liquitex High Gloss Varnish with 3 oz of water. Dribble small amounts of varnish and water mixture on a clean canvas. Using your old t-shirt scrap, lightly wipe the varnish over your painted canvas. Do not leave puddles or streaks, do not continue to wipe or you varnish will gum up. Wait about 15 mins to apply your next coat. I usually apply 7 coat and dry over night.
Wear gloves and store your wet t-shirt scrap in a baggie between coats.

Will it work on Matte varnish as well?
I haven’t used the matte varnish but I would think so, maybe try it out on something you are not going to hang, sell or give away.
Why do you mix the varnish with water?
1:1 ratio. I used 3 oz varnish and 3 oz water.
The varnish dries really fast, mixing with water helps slow down the drying so you can apply several thin coats with no crush marks or streaks. It also makes your varnish last longer. Varnish isn’t cheap. Of course you don’t have to add water and can just apply it with a brush or sponge.
Do you apply an isolation coat? I have heard this is necessary and that it can compromise the varnish to water it down.
No isolation coat was used. I haven’t had any problems with the paintings I have varnished with this method.
Thank you!
