Illgraben 28 07 2020 - Lave torrentielle, Murgang, Debris flow

  • High intensity of rain, but only 8 mm water, not enough to push the debris flow until the Rhône. It is going slowly, by step, til it dissipate. Une lave torrentielle qui s'évanouit.. Eine Mure die sich ermüdet....Pont Bouthanais,
    Bhutanbrücke.

    It never ceases to amaze me that I’ll keep watching these, because even though they’re largely the same thing happening in different videos, enough stuff is different, and I’m still impressed that each storm can knock enough dirt and rock loose and carry it down the mountain. It always looks like wet cement to me, as well

      @nonaurbizniz7440 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The flow mechanics fascinate me. This stuff has far less water content than cement yet flows like watery mud but its mostly soil and rocks with a very low water content.

    When I was a young lad we used to hike every week in dried up river beds with huge boulders like these in the video. Every year the path will be different because everything moves, even huge boulders. I never witnessed any flash floods or mud slides, only the aftermath, and always wondered how can water move a bus-sized huge rock like this - now I know. Thanks.

    Now this was quite fascinating - I’ve never seen one with a slow flow that kept stopping entirely! Thank you so much - your videos are always amazing!

      There is a lot of rock debris here relative to the amount of water so it's behaving something like waterlogged sand. Fascinating to see these things on Earth's scale.

      Whats up with that big hole in the creek bed that it drops down into? That is odd....why does it not fill up? Why is it there?

  • @garybryan6419

    So good! This helps me appreciate the character of mudflows. What really fascinates me with this one is the 'potential' which becomes suspended, and only needs another feeder-surge to cause it to move again. This looks to be a set-up for when enough rain or maybe slightest slide, would have no problem 're-activating' the mud which has been deposited on the sides. Watching for the next one perhaps to be 'formidable.' Thanks again.

    I’d love to know more about how those concrete retaining walls are engineered. I am amazed they don’t get torn apart by the flows.

    • @Johnboy33545
      @Johnboy33545 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They're well engineered and built deep into the bedrock. They do an impressive job. Concrete is incredible stuff. Structures built by the Roman's are still standing. The walls aren't very difficult but timing and access would be critical.
      Perhaps Monseur Zuffery could do a video on the history of them.

    There must be a doctoral thesis in there somewhere, measuring precipitation amounts, precipitation rates, speed of the flow, translational surging, maximum size of “particles” moved, frequency, duration and volume of individual surges, too much calculus for me. Should be some relational equations that come out of that that could be applied to planning for flood channel design that could be applied around the globe. Such a great laboratory tool to have a “tame” debris flow that you can drive up to and do regular measurements for research.

    I cannot understand how floods like this can occur in waves, or pulses. The original rainfall that's causing this has to have been steady, and could not have varied as much as the flood seems to indicate.

    • @pierre-emmanuelzufferey1470
      @pierre-emmanuelzufferey1470  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No it always clean itself, til now..if we would make the channel larger, it would slow down and the danger of deposit would be bigger... I heard that years ago the channel was so ful that some walls were covered. At the arrival, the Rhône clean the deposit...see my other videos, some view down the Rhône.
