I've heard speculation that the illuminate only attacked because they saw that John Helldiver was off the front lines. They did not suspect that his public appearance would rally a hundred thousand helldivers to thwart the invasion of Calypso, much to their detriment.
The fact that John Helldiver's actor Craig Lee Thomas bears a passing resemblance to one of the background characters in Helldivers 1 is just too good. The ability to co-opt Captain America/Winter Soldier's backstory and say that he's been on ice since the first war and was recently transferred to the propaganda corps is just too good for words.
@@Grizabeebles I like to think he started as an actor, became a helldiver for real as part of the gig, and just kept surviving impossible heroics like a reverse Audie Murphey. But now, after 100 years on ice, helldivers are the only family he has left... And he still does propaganda in his spare time, of course.
John dropped into my squad a while ago. It was in our most dire moment of need, the bugs were swarming like I've never seen before, we were mere moments from being overrun. He dropped in, cut through the swathes of bugs like a hot knife through Super Margarine, and dissapeared into the gloom. Truly, a staunch pillar of freedom. I owe him my life.
Ive heard that John Helldiver may actually be the most recent descendant of a man called "Chuck Norris". Allegedly, Norris was capable of similar feats of superhuman talent, such as turning down the sun when he feels its too bright outside, or having a third fist under his beard. If these claims are in fact true, that may explain John's exploits...
I have always believed that General Brasch is a titan of freedom able to suplex a tank, and John Helldiver is just the best helldiver to ever live. Those Videos you see of a single diver saving all the samples while jumping into a pelican mid takeoff, that is John.
I played with him this afternoon (got screenshots to prove it). He's super chill, dedicated, and an amazing Helldiver. When the squids arrived, he played 28 hours straight, liberating 0.75% solo-an incredible feat! He is currently diving with the 99th if anyone wants to say hello! Sadly he is not always available due to classified missions issued by high command.

My team was dealing with the Illuminate when they first showed up. Out of grenades and turrets that we could call, on our last magazines or only one left, Eagles rearming, and down to out last can of Democracy Drafts ration, five Harvesters showed up, bubble shields activating. John Helldiver comes driving in taking out the swarm while doing doughnuts, then jumps out, ripping the tripod's shields down with a P-19 Redeemer, then surgically takes out a leg with a SMG-32 Repremand, one after another. The swarm off of us, we found stashes of ammo and an EAT, and took out the fifth Harvester. Because even with a hero around to save the day is no reason to slack on fighting for Liberty and Managed Democracy! With no other reward to give him, I handed over out last beer. He laughed and said an earned free beer from a fellow Helldiver is the best beer, shotgunned it in a way so that we couldnt see his face, got back in the vehicle, and drove off screaming, "DEMOCRACY!" He may be all yhe things said about him, but it seems he considers himself "just another Helldiver" like the rest of us, and I know I want to fight harder than ever so he's not alone in these battles!
While joyriding in my newly acquired FRV (thanks super earth) I spotted what seemed to be John staring at an illuminate monolith, but rather than looking dazed or disoriented like the rest of us, he simply stared it down, and the surrounding illuminate started to falter to their knees in agony, the monolith turning into a piercing, democratic, yellow hue. The last thing I saw was the voteless around him, seemingly getting a brief moment of liberation from this new monolith, as they gazed upon John. What I saw next brought a tear to my eye. John saluted to the voteless, letting them know they served super earth well, before mercifully gunning them down with his HMG. All I could hear where his screams of laughter and enjoyment, obviously a celebratory battle cry for the those lost citizens being freed of course.
I could swear I fought alongside a man calling himself John Helldiver! Unfortunately I cant say where it was that I witnessed the legend as that would be highly undemocratic. He was very good at killing squids!

Well once i blacked out during a mission from an Automaton rocket to the head, then John showed up and carried me in one arm throughout the whole mission, he did every objective there was and to extract he jumped with me in his arm up to my ships landing bay into pelican one, took me to to get medical attention and saved my life in the 30 seconds before the start of the operation, then he went back to the planet side to bring his lucky Hellpod (It uses John to land) back and quickly liberate the whole sector before checking in on me and when i woke up he gave me a liber-tea and said "Hey kid, the name's Helldiver... John Helldiver." Then i never saw him since.
Interesting seeing Helldivers videos, I tried getting back into this game. But the mission time limits killed it for me, I was in one mission where I had to find 4 ships. Was in for like ten minutes, super destroyer left and I was forced into extracting before I could finish the mission. I don't like games with time limits, I gave the game a good shot. Like 14 hours, even when I started I hated the mission timers. I get why it's there, but it's something I don't like in games. I hate feeling rushed, especially when half of the objectives are on opposite sides of the map. I think the universe Is cool, and I like watching videos. But the game itself clearly is not for me, I like taking my time and this is a game where that is not an option. So I likely will not play the game again, but I'll keep up with it through videos

@@Auvas_Damask Yeah thats fine, its just whenever I replied with the patch note numbers it kept deleting itself.
Seems updating the comment worked though.
I heard he took out a illuminate ship using only throwing knives!
I LOVE JOHN
John is the helldivers 2 equivalent of karl from deep rock galactic
He should be called Johnny Rico!
John helldiver doesnt die he's just missing in action
