    Hey everyone just letting you know that I did in fact mean to say mass and not weight. This was a simulation to show how negative mass would react if it were real. I very much know the difference between mass and weight🙂 If you watched this video thinking I should be saying weight instead of mass then you need to watch it again until it sinks in.

      The Action Lab look seriously read the term I’m not watching anymore of your videos as it’s feeling more and more akin to flat earther science
      The definition states it clearly
      to have a negative mass is to have a negative quantity of matter hence it’s impossible in most situations if not all
      A negative mass is not something that can be simplified to moving the opposite direction it’d be the opposite of anything that has matter present it would have no density and less than no matter present so it wouldn’t even something effected anywhere similar to what we know
      For instance would we even be able to touch it or would it be a void that we pass through and inside seriously this is a fundamentals tricky subject
      mass, in physics, the quantity of matter in a body regardless of its volume or of any forces acting on it. The term should not be confused with weight, which is the measure of the force of gravity (see gravitation) acting on a body.

      The Action Lab, wouldn't an object with negative mass in motion continue to accelerate until it mass reaches zero or becomes positive since acceleration increases mass?

    • @DTG_LOCKETT
      @DTG_LOCKETT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Metal Gear it's probabilities are possible but his example is flawed by using a ping pong ball pulled by a string and a balloon on a string because a negative mass object would still remain stationary for an unmeasurable time period outside a vacuum when pulled due to atmospheric pressure and then once in motion began to accelerate faster than force that caused it to move. In the jar and car example the negative mass object acted upon by the increase of atmospheric pressure in one direction would shoot out like a rocket in the opposite direction.
      Good theory, poor examples of it's actions and reactions to force and atmospheric pressure.
      Could go deeper into it by talking about if it is moving towards a gravitational pull verses away but it's way past my bed time. A small hint; he talks about it briefly when he talks about dropping it.

    The negative mass-related stuff is so interesting! If it actually exists, we (in the far future) could even use it as sort of a mass driver to help us reach incomprehensible speeds!

    • @drewg2403
      @drewg2403 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Even better than that, look into the Alcubierre drive if you haven't heard of it. Theoretically the drive moves space around a mass beyond light speed without violating physics. The drive requires the existence of negative mass with specific properties, but is consistent with Einstein's field equations. However, jury is still out on it since we haven't yet figured out how to merge general relativity with quantum mechanics. What we think of as dark energy could in fact be negative mass, or it could be even more complicated such as dark energy and dark matter might be two properties of the same thing: negative mass. The latter is being researched currently and might even be testable within the next couple decades.

      I don't think it is possible. Mass, as I understand it, is not some property that can be whatever. Each element has an atomic mass, which describes how much of it there is in one unit. It doesn't make sense for there to be a negative amount of mass anywhere. There can be a deficit relative to something else, like a pressure differential, but it's never below 0. Think of it as an intricate 3D distribution of dots in the vacuum of 0. It's all additive, not subtractive.

      magnetically sensitive negative mass, apply electromagnet field to push with varying intensity based on desired speed, slow down with opposing electromagnet. The issue would be that (to my knowledge) we have yet to observe any scenario where you can apply force to a contained object and have it return enough force to propel the containment, all that is fixed to said containment and itself in any sort of way.

We could keep create a simulation of negative mass (when we have the technology) and then keep a positive mass in front of it and move at the speed of light. I appreciate the ending differential analyses between mass, negative mass, and finally, antimatter. It's an easy, quick, and simple Illustration to outline. It's just that our literacy has some tendencies that give false illusions of relevancy to other concepts that perhaps were not most aptly named (a very common issue in science;the last disciplines and their intuitive skills do not juxtapose well with those of the creative / linguistical / artistic sides of our brains. It takes a plethora of unique talents to integrate all of these skills in such a way that is minimally complex, ergo maximally accessible to the fullest extent of interpretation, analysis, and application, but simultaneously is also maximally potent, complete, intricate, and microcosmically borne with cohesion in its independently natural aptitudes for interpolation, extrapolation, application, and visibly taut with these self-explanatory "instructions" (which, majestically in its own exudence of pulchritudinous grandeur, sports the power and pure force of rendering that naturally follows the mental faculties and imaginative processes that produce the raw potential of advancement, but then also necessitate the brutal components that move and arrange the decoding of the original message for what to do, now put to work by way of some actual labor and deciding amongst the illustrious surroundings that make pragmatism Be, and Become via force and intent put onto the resources found within one system, married with the next system, integrated with another, and so on.
    In other words, what is for this video a small, but relatively unintuitive, unnatural step of post-accomplishment selective key integration - specifically instead of merely ending the video, or naming some resources or concepts to look into afterwards, the author actually takes on the responsibility of tackling a naturally curious next step, albeit most professors I know, work with, and have worked with, would ignore the antimatter explanation altogether in favor of efficiency, and literally saying as much as that these type of questions, - additional but natural by circumstance, yet so unique and innovative and potentially deviation of direction from the core concepts, - that they can interact or interfere with the core interfacing with the most basic simple and commonly expected of the curriculum.
    Ignoring these subtle facets can halt innovation and uninspire theorists, curious minds, and as it turns out, those who desire an even easier, more sensibly rational and intelligent learning route, by presenting a far richer portion of the universe in such a concise, minute little departure, that the remembering of the integration of these similar but necessarily differential parts makes future analyses and applications of any portion of the subjects at hand with newer, different parts so much easier, because it teaches a student to observe and study these naturally occurring elements of Nature, or Program Design, or any other detail or category of information so much more accessible and righteously justified to the student, who by nature of our learning institutions and the necessary trust bound with subordinate psychology are already nervous and typically scared, unsure, or disinterested in asking questions that would otherwise independently lead to the same conclusions and smoothness of presentation... This habit is criminal, but resurgent with its convenience for Instructors. I wish that more presenting bodied would take on the responsibilities of content inclusion and audience involvement the way this one does. Having taught many disparate areas of study at The John's Hopkins University for years now has perhaps made me crazy about these potential details in presentation and the purity of the risks for abandonment that I see commonplace in a top 10 institution (depending on the year) certainly shows that the endowments and budgetary investments are (as only to be expected) NOT going towards hiring and sourcing and applying the Elite of pedagogical benefit and resources reflecting and corresponding with ideal outcomes.
    Needless to say today has been a stretch, much like my post, cooked over a fire of vocational aggravation embedded with pure mediocrity, with nobody in over an hour's drive having an IQ as high as two-sigma how my own... It can be a struggle to get access outlets for the anger and stress and physical agony for neurological reasons, but still, I always ensure my communication is... "Intelligible", in the Epitome of Hyperbole as it comes with applying the term.
    Anyway, I truly was just excited that the creator mentioned and investigated the Antimatter element, and without actually directly saying as much, encouraged us to think about what we say and how we say things, how we create and coin concepts such that their integration into your field of study may be aptly and appropriately received, engaged with and understood by your colleagues and cohorts. @@AkshatSinghania I wish I had that type of time...
      If I did I would have at the very least fixed some of my syntactical and punctuation-based errors.
      To take it one or two steps further, you seem implicitly insistent that there was far more at which I should be looking for revisionary planning and execution... Right? And if this assumption of yours was true, or even worthy of the absolute slightest, most wildly remote consideration, having been presented with or founded upon the flagrantly meager, fantastically infinitesimal excuse for any semblance of a singular piece of evidence at the foundational levels of your remotest, laziest, embarrassingly wholly absent corners of thought and argumentation framing the emptiest of claims to which you happen to be fully accustomed already - perhaps preceding your very faculties of awareness altogether.
      Otherwise... You would just be a redundantly whiny flare echoing the very same sentiments and humours I previously articulated in multiplicity - as when I found the silliness, the strangeness, and the heavy weight of the over articulated approach to writing I used in thematically shaping that comment (and to a lesser extent, this one, so that you have a second example of what I am talking about for reference).
      And how ridiculous it is, and how ridiculous must you feel, that I thought for sure nobody cared, myself included.
      And yet... Here you are. Proving every point against your very basic intellect, and utmost common sense, in favor of your insistence on the height of cringeworthy pitiable behavioral offenses and unjustifiably nonsensical lowbrow repetitive displaying of nonsensically flaming parading, intangibly soaked in backwards propositions and densely soaked oozing of smelly, infantile, disease-ridden social faux pas borne of the lowest class of toxic parasitical pangs of guilt and empty-headed insignificance hoping with all desperation for a context and a purpose of any feasibly recognizable nature.
      How's existential that identity crisis working out for you? Any luck feeding off of the existence of others in that sloppy minute carving of least eventful, purposelessly ineffectual, inconsiderately wasteful, hopelessly disregarded, all-around hideous and rank smelly caged cavernous perch from which you've grown accustomed to servicing, borrowing, burroughing, squatting, at best...?
      ...And, in tandem, as writers are to do on occasions involved in thematically and with motif's relation circumscription making calls back to a tagline or to tag a relational concept... I remark on how I hope nobody took the time to read this; for the same reasons implicit prior, including but not limited to the vast lengths of writing I went to, ironically for purposes absentia vis-à-vis les auditeurs instantia a vehementia qua having defeated all purposes of customary receptivity, convincingly conversationally exchanging ideas with merit and achieving progressions worthy of positive reflections...

    Wouldnt negative mass be the best way to power spaceships? You could make the negative mass somehow float in a vakuum inside a globe and if this globe is on the backside of a spaceship you could take a piece of mass and push it against the globe so that they begin to chase until speed of light. And if you would take the mass away it would stop. Best engine concept ever thought of in history, thank me me later humanity. :D

    Question at 3:01 why then when you went forwards holding the base of the balloon did it still go backwards and not forwards when you moksed your hand and arm forwards? Just more force then it can Handle for the Negitave mass?

    • @agentx7138
      @agentx7138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      If you watched from outside the care the balloon would still move forward the air in the car is also being pushed foward creating the small pressure difference within the car.

    • @SivaKanthSharma
      @SivaKanthSharma 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      When the whole car was accelerating, both the balloon and the air inside were accelerating. When he did it with his hand, only the balloon was accelerating.
      This was just an approximation to show how negative mass would behave. Obviously we can't replicate all of its properties in one demonstration, so trying to make other inferences and deductions would simply break down.

      I think he explained it at 4:40. He said that negative masses would act like positive masses as long as there are no impacts on it. If an impact does occur, it'll shoot right through the impacting agent.
      It's difficult to explain it in easy terms.
      Let's take the negative ping-pong ball again!😂 A normal, positive ping-pong ball will bounce upwards after hitting the ground, but a negative one - oh no! It'll be thinking, "Who dareth attack me?👺" and will keep on pushing harder and harder into the soil until it goes through the core of Earth and out the land in the opposite side of the planet! The equilibrium of our planets forces will be majorly disturbed and life may no longer exist as we know it today.
      Man, that ping-pong ball is not only negative, but also toxic as hell now that I think harder on it! I'll assume it's a blessing that negative masses aren't found... Yet!😶

    • @noahdilworth8847
      @noahdilworth8847 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the negative mass would act like how we expect a positive mass to, in that it would accelerate in a direction opposite to the movement of the container/car. The force acting on the object in the container is due to a pressure differential across the object, pressure greater towards the back(b/c of the inertia of the fluid). This net force due to pressure acts in the direction of motion and the mass, negative or not, has no bearing on the pressure force because that depends only on the magnitude of the pressure differential and the area upon which the pressure is acting. You can think of this pressure force as just being a whole buncha physical impacts, just on the molecular scale, between the object and the gas molecules. Then, with the pressure force pushing from the back, or frequency of collisions greater on the back, the negative mass will accelerate in the opposite direction of that forwards push, which is backwards, in the direction opposite to the container motion.

    • @jeffthecoder
      @jeffthecoder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Farhan_049 That's sorta wrong though. If an object with lesser mass and another object of greater mass propel toward each other and collide, the lesser mass (according to the math) bounces back away from the greater mass, and the greater mass slows down. The amount of bounce back/slow down depends on the difference in masses and the speed of propulsion. If the lesser mass object has a NEGATIVE mass, it will still bounce away, but the greater mass won't slow down, it'll speed up, again, the amount depending on the difference in masses and speed of propulsion.
      If the 2 objects have the same amount of mass but inverted (i.e one is 10 kg the other is -10 kg) and propel toward each other at the exact same speed, the mathematical result ends up in a divide by zero error, which means the two objects would annihilate each other and convert to pure energy
      Since the earth itself has a relative propulsion speed of zero, a negative mass pingpong ball would just bounce back up..BUT the weird part is if it bounced off the ground a few times it would bounce higher a few times and then awkwardly find equilibrium by suddenly appearing to "stick" to the ground after a few bounces

      @@jeffthecoder Maybe that is the point. Positive masses react like that, and negative masses murder the impact source. At least that's what I absorbed from the video!
      Positive masses, of different magnitudes, would make the smaller mass bounce away due to inertia. However, if one of the masses are negative, it'll have something totally opposite of inertia, probably. That's how I conclude that it'd push through the positive mass.
      I know it does sound wrong, but I can think of no other explanation! 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@jeffthecoder that’s actually wrong itself. Yes, what you’re describing is what we typically see in physics, as all masses are positive, disregarding inelastic collisions. However, what you’re suggesting is a negative mass of lesser magnitude, (size), than the positive mass. The perfect example of which, he described in the video: “a positive mass Earth impacting a negative mass ping pong ball.” As described in the video, the positive, greater mass would be pushed backwards until either it accelerates faster than the negative mass, or the normal force exceeds its limit and is blown through. The negative mass, however, just keeps accelerating towards the positive mass.
