it hurts my heart when beginners say paper doesn't matter. The person who said this was using watercolor on PRINTER paper.

I had someone asking for advice in a FB group, he was told the problem was the printer paper he was using and got really upset saying that paper doesn’t matter, we were all wrong and we didn’t know anything about watercolour😂

The Arteza 100% cotton watercolor paper is really good. They also make sketchbooks with the same paper. (Found on Amazon)
I've tested some local brands in Europe, but the Arteza Expert 100% cotton paper is still always on stock. I'm glad you made that video. I didn't know there is foldable watercolor paper, too.

I found an Arteza 100% cotton PAD and plenty of arteza watercolour sketchbooks but no 100% cotton sketchbooks. Maybe OP was referring to the pad? I’d be very interested to find out if there is a sketchbook though

Oh my. I’m so glad to see an honest review of the sketchbook paper - I really hated working with it for watercolour, but found that it responded well when I used my inks or microns. I found when I erased my sketches from the sketchbook paper, but paper crumbled away a bit. I’ve got some beautiful ink drawings that I’m really proud of on that paper though, guess I got a bit creative with how I worked with it and the two I had served me well in the end. I do like the sound of their 100% cotton paper, I might consider trying it.

I have a watercolor pad that doesn't work well with watercolors (it acts like the layers are still wet even though they are dry and I can't really layer) but it is amazing with ink

    • @KimberleyB

I agree. It's terrible for watercolor, but if you work within the constraints of what DOES work well on it, you can use it successfully.

I love seeing other artists opinions on paper. I love the watercolor sketchbook papers but I think it's because I am working drier on the sketchbook and layering. It reminds me of the stillman & birn beta mixed media book. I dont carrefour their original premium paper because of the uniform texture but using the backside with watercolor markers and rubber stamping is great! I really like both of the expert papers. I love that there is something for everyone. I enjoyed this!

I sadly purchased the sketchbooks earlier this year. I was excited to work on them with watercolors at first, but then I noticed that the paper was behaving oddly. I have used the other arteza premium water color paper (the heavily textured one you used in the video, that they use in the spiral bound sketchbooks) and I thought they would behave comparably. I decided to test both papers and, while I could layer better in the first paper since the layers were not easily lifted, I noticed that the paint would sink into the paper and not move whatsoever, even ultramarine would stain the paper badly (it looked as if I had tried to lift a phthalo, that is how much this paper soaked in the paint). What is worse is that sometimes the paint spreads (a line of paint may become fuzzy around the edges and feather) after the paper completely dried. I decided to just use these sketchbooks for gouache, and if I plan on using them for watercolor then I will apply a layer of watercolor ground to help with the aforementioned issues. I am sad because the sketchbooks have a nice linen cover and come in larger sizes, but then again they were pretty inexpensive. You win some you lose some.

I bought the sketchbooks a couple of months ago. I'm a beginner but found them so hard to work with compared even to student-grade Strathmore that I gave them to my son to draw in. At least one of us is happy!

I've got the 3.5/5.5 arteza hardcover book and I actually really love it. I prefer the duller dried colors, and I've been more comfortable using and layering on this paper than I can ever remember being. I'm still a total newbie, and I can say I don't like my watercolor brush pens on it, but the gouache looks and dries so nicely for me. To each their own! I think that premium texture lines thing would drive me insane hahaha

I've used the folding paper one time, I had no idea it was not 100% cotton, although I was not extremely excited about the results of my painting, I just figured that was 100% me. Well, I'll be trying it again. It comes in two sizes by the way, and I found that it is sturdy when folded. I did not try to paint after folding it though, so I will be doing tat next.

I've had a little use of an Arteza linen-bound watercolour sketchbook with Arteza Real Brush Pens, Staedtler dual tip watercolour pens, and various watercolour pencils, and I'd come to the same conclusion: colours "set" very quickly on this paper and it began to pill quickly with water, compared with, even say Hobbycraft's entry level watercolour paper (£6.50 for 50 A4 sheets). I guess if one used them for quick, wet-on-dry plein air watercolour sketches that's not terrible, but I wouldn't want to try using it for anything more "worked". Great review!

i dont know if there is another premium paper in their line, but i hate their 32 sheet watercolor pad. It discouraged me from even wanting to pick up a brush. And not just because of the texture. After trying other brands, I now have that premium watercolor pad just for testing paper like swatches etc. Honestly I think it so much more worth buying single sheets from a nice brand and cut them to your own needs. But hey, that's just my opinion and we're here for yours!
Keep creating, stay safe and motivated. xoxo

I 100% believe the Sketchbook paper was created for field artists aka plein air and urban sketchers who want a paper that absorbs the paint quickly and dries exactly where you put it because they obviously aren't layering and are in an environment where you would have to work quickly. And also just sketches where you wouldn't necessarily do a finished piece, but add some colour here and there to enhance your sketch.

Thank you for this video. My current Arches hot press pad also gives those little bubbles and there is a texture in the paint as it dries. I’m very happy to have found a paper review that actually points that out. I guess we have to use that characteristic in the painting...if you have found a way to eliminate that, I’d like to try it! Thanks again.

I just purchased a two pack of Arteza 76 page Watercolor book with Premium paper and wanted to say that it DOES NOT have the lined surface texture like the example in this video. It seems to be more like the framing paper which you said was also classified as Premium. As a true beginner I cant make any judgements about the paper, I just didnt want anyone to turn away from that watercolor book for fear the paper would be too textured.
    Thank you, Arleesha. 💕

I have not tried any Arteza products. I wonder if they have blocks... My Hahnemuhle Cezanne block is glued AND gauzed on all 4 sides. It is a bit like pulling teeth to get a sheet separated from it....I did get the the thing for half price.

Hey, so I hope this isn't an annoying question, I just really need to know. Anyway, I looked at your shop and didn't see it, but I was curious if you still have that last painting. The last one, on the expert 100% cotton, painting?
If you do I would love love Love to buy it, original or print.
Again I hope this annoying or anything.
    Have a good day!

I purchased the watercolour sketchbook a while ago and was really disappointed.
As you have shown in the video the colour and the water are soaking into the paper immediately and cannot be lifted, which makes it difficult not only to lay down gradients and let colours move around but also to lay down an even layer of one colour.
I imagine a lot of other people like me, who want to improve on their watercolour skills, are drawn to this sketchbook since it is quite cheap and the format and the linen cover look really nice.
Though I have found that the paper works well for gouache if you use it in a very opaque way as well as for coloured pencils, ballpoint pens and some fineliners.

I wonder if Arteza comes in hot press? I've searched on internet and failed to get the information.

Wonderful review video! I do have a question about sides of the Arteza papers, I have had different experiences with both sides of their papers! Even pulling a sheet from the watercolor sketchbook I am very aware that I must use the “front” side of the sheet! Did you try both sides of the folding paper? I enjoyed watching your video and I commend your through process! Thank you.

I think any of these papers (except the sketchbook one) would be a great upgrade from the Canson XL watercolor paper without breaking the bank

I have tried the 100 cotton paper and had a VERY different experience with it. Almost the exact opposite of yours. I actually purchased it to try after watching some of your videos. I disliked the final product so much that I repainted it on different brand of paper and had much better results. Maybe I'll try it again with a different brand of paint.

I tested many of the Arteza paper (and their watercolors) and it felt really bad... I wanted to test the 100% cotton paper but it is as expensive as the Arches paper, here, in France, so I wonder if I’m not gonna just continue to work with Arches instead. Arteza makes cool products but they often come in bad or at best, average quality. Their watercolors may be the worst I’ve been using of all my watercolors tubes and pans, being chalky, opaque... Just my opinion here of course but if you want quality I’m not sure Arteza is the best option for you.

ive been so put of arteza watercolor paper since I tried their expert watercolor paper that isn't 100 percent cotton. Whenever I put down paint, even if I only left it for a second, the paint would leave a stain no matter what pigment or colors I used. Hopefully the rest of their papers don't have this issue.
