I just completed reading 'The Malamute Man' covering this team. Very impressive team of adventurers indeed. I was amazed at the level of extreme fitness this team of one human and his dogs displays.

Thanks for the pup query, they thrive in the Arctic not that a little extra care doesn't go amiss - they spend their nights with mum in a sheltered snow hole and during the day they travel on the sleds wrapped and insulated in caribou fur. If you'd like to read more you can visit Joe Henderson's website at alaskanarcticexpeditions and download a pdf "Born Tough: A Story of Survival", it's all about little Pete and Lupine and for cute pup photos visit my site at arctic-stories. Enjoy!

I have a husky/Mal mix and he is the laziest dog you will ever meet haha! He does like the cold and walking, but will not run except for small spurts. The vet said he is perfectly healthy

Hi Liam, sounds utterly normal for a mal, they like doing things at their own pace. Joe Henderson's working mals do exactly what you described, short surges of speed followed by slowing right down to a walking pace. They might not win any races but they've got oodles of staying power.

ArcticStories Yep. Just as draft ("budweiser") horses all but vanished in the twentieth-century, so did the utilitarian ("freighting") sled dog as the snowmachine took over the North. The dainty, high-strung, high-maintenance, racing Iditadoggies have taken over and few these days now what a real sled dog looks and acts like.

Lol you will not believe the ignorance most people have against leaving this breed outside like this in winter.
People be calling police or animal control on you for not bringing them inside. Even the dogs refuse to want to come indoors and spend their time running away from people trying to coax them inside lol.
I got alaskan malamutes myself and they absolutely love the cold as much as I do. My favorite season is the winter time. Alaskan malamutes are an amazingly sweet breed, I just love them!

I have a 16 year old husky, possibly mix with a bit of Malamute. I've pampered him so much it's pathetic. During winter when it got into the negatives and snow/ice. He was sleeping sprawled out. The colder it got, the harder it got to get him in. It felt like abusing the guy but it's what he likes. During the intense heat, he would run out, hit the can and zip back in. Now 16, he doesn't care. He hates inside. These are the best dogs / companions on earth.

@pinz2022 That's right, except there are 18 dogs out front and 4 dogs along side - it takes a big, powerful team to pull 3 sleds! They are intelligent too and can navigate their own way in a white out. Once a course is set they keep the line by sensing the wind and reading the direction and angle of the drifted snow, the sastrugi. If you are interested, Joe Henderson has written a great series of articles about the team, look up his site alaskanarcticexpeditions & go to articles/Malamute_Leaders

these are my favorite dogs. Sled dogs are the best. I have an akita with a thick fur for the cold and boy does he love the cold.--Sincerely Whispering Cloud.

Yes, they are very incredibly inspiring animals and as proud as I am of them I should point out that they are Joe Henderson's dogs - I just get to share them every once in a while - how good is that! Joe has his own TH-cam channel, ArcticExpeditions, with some more footage of the dogs.

@ArcticStories - Lol...that video you saw of the Sibe's was just in my favourites list...I haven't uploaded any videos but I'm a Mally lover with 2 of my own. (I added a picture of them to my profile). I also assist with Mal rescue in Australia, where snow is rarely ever seen unless going to the mountains in the eastern states during winter. It's lovely to see a video of them in their true environment.

Now let me get this straight... you have three sleds chained together. Eight to ten dogs pulling from the front and a dog on either side of each sled?
I thought that in those blazing whiteout conditions the lead dogs need someone out in front acting as forerunner that they can orient on.

Idiots, malamutes too slow to sled, they wont run. You supposed to have a team of huskies, & a malamute that on the sled. The guy is walking along side the malamutes haha

So caring for an animal makes one a snowflake? Well count me in. You on the other hand...... a cream puff perhaps.
