Its more spacious on the inside than I thought, but I see what people are talking about when they say its off scale on the outside, and its still got awkward places for minifigs. If they made it a bit bigger those space saving features would have made this a great display piece AND playset.
I don't know what others think, but when I personally say Disney tax or Starwars tax (two different taxes, both applied) I don't mean the price bump LEGO adds to the product in order to cover the cost of the licensing, I mean the price bump they add because they know fans will pay. it's a tax for us, not LEGO. if they sell a 500 pieces spaceship with 3 figures for 60$, and they sell a 500 pieces X-wing with 3 figures for 70$, they added a 10$ tax for us to pay because they know we will pay it. They charge 250$ for a cool Marvel building because they know fans will pay.
true but 2.7k pcs to $250 is pretty good for a theme like this, star wars is often well above the 10 cents/part ideal. If you like this set you're not totally getting ripped off compared to other post price hike lego.
I know I outright _refuse_ to pay it. Even if I have to wait over a year to get my hands on a set, with the way they price them, if it isn't on discount, I don't want it. On the other hand getting an AT-ST Raider for $28 is awesome, waiting is worth it.
Wow, compared to the lighthouse this is actually looking cheap now. A few months back I felt like this was expensive. Really goes to show how much those price increases are affecting perception of sets
This set really didn’t need that back alley and could have used the full depth of the baseplate to make more space within the building. The alley gap looks so awkward when any other modular is connected to it. For the price ($310 here in Canada) I would have expected far more. I’ll be waiting on this as it’s not exciting enough to buy right away and there are other sets with more value I’d rather have that have been out for longer.
I know it would have dramatically increased the price even more, but the main building really should have used the extra 6 studs of space in the back. Every level would have looked more properly spacious with those 6 studs worth of extra space inside, especially the first floor with the staircase
I love all the minor details in this! For example the Shady Acres sign in the dumpster is a reference to the retirement home Odin was meant to living at in Thor: Ragnarok - in the film the building was being demolished in front of Thor and Loki.
Thanks, Jang. Good review and I enjoyed your reasoning at the end there. I think the days of the $200 modular are gone, which is why I broke down and bought The Bookshop earlier this year. Thought I'd snag one at a price I can feel comfortable with while I could. Glad I made that choice!
The modular prices are definitely kind of upsetting, even though they've gotten a bit bigger. $200 was bad enough when I was gifted the police station, then bought the Boutique Hotel, but then to have the hotel go up $30 because of inflation ... that really sucks for those who thought they'd wait on it a few months only for inflation to slap them in the face! I already cringe at next year's price for the new modular. I'm still getting over the shock of the Hogwarts and Diagon Alley sets, which I think is $70 and $50 respectively ... I really want those before they retire, but ugh ... that's NOT going to be easy!
Thanks a lot Jang for showing us how it ligns up with other Modular Buildings. My favorite one is with the Police station to the left of it so the walls of both touch completely. Indeed with boutique hotel it’s not really good, but boutique hotel has that with a lot of buildings.
I wasn't going to buy this, but I just might now. There is so much more going on here than I otherwise would have imagined, especially the ability to customise the exterior of it in terms of portal placement. GLADoS would be proud.
This was the first set that I could see myself making changes to (I tend to build as per the instructions). I removed the bottom step of the staircase and foraged for pieces to finish the floor. Even that one extra stud width made a difference to the doors opening onto the staircase. I'll raise up the handrails on the mezzanine, and maybe try and remove the door play feature and widen the first floor in front of the bookcases. The minifigs were disappointing - normal Strange and a better Wong were in the Gargantos Showdown set, Scarlet Witch from CMF was much better, and no America Chavez which was really odd given the movie being promoted.
I bought this set for the build, most of the minifigures disappointed me. I only like dead and sinister strange, and Wanda’s hairpiece. The iron man is fine, and the Spider-Man is cool, but could have been the iron spider suit. The rest of the minifigures needed leg printing, or at least for the alive doctor strange dual molded legs to make him exclusive, the greatest doctor strange you can get in LEGO
I'm so happy they are branching out the modular buildings to other themes maybe we could get a DC one in the future or some kind of star wars building I'm not sure but this whole concept is really cool for building your modular building collection
Consumers: "Lego is really getting too expensive as of late!" Lego: "Here's a €500 Harry Potter train that won't run on regular tracks! And have you seen our €300 Lighthouse that has a super cramped interior? Our €400 rollercoaster runs for an astonishing 2,5 seconds! Give us ALL THE MONEY!!!" It's called corporate greed and that sweet little family business from Denmark is not even trying to hide it anymore.
What is disappointing is that this is one of those sets rumored to have originally been priced lower ($210 USD) but was subject to the recent price hike and was bumped up to $250. Honestly, even $210 feels too much for this set but makes it slightly more forgivable. I, for one, bought the set on day one ONLY because Target accidentally listed it for pre-order for $200. It’s just infuriating that the year following record sales and profits that Lego decides to increase prices all across the board while many of us are still recovering from the pandemic.
I really hate the price hikes ... I suppose maybe I could understand it, but it sucks they applied it to all their existing catalog rather than just new sets ... I got the Boutique Hotel for $200 in January, it's $230 now. I've been chomping at the bit to saveup for Hogwarts AND Diagon Alley, but their price hikes make me almost literally weep ... What a shame!
The one thing that makes me glad j bought the Lions KnightsCastle set instead of this is the sheer amount of stickers. Personally I hate them and to see this many stickers in a massive set just really disappoints me and kinda bums me out bc getting them as unique prints would be really cool
While I completely agree any “premium” set, whether that is defined by price or by target audience, should in principle have no stickers at all, for something like this that is based off of 3rd party entertainment IP and needing a *lot* of unavoidable source material references/details, I can’t be too upset about stickers in sets like this and the Bugle. But I hate stickers on stuff like the creator/icons cars, the BTTF time machine, Optimus Prime, or stuff like the space shuttle. Those generally could have all their detail printed for not too much extra cost.
After buying this at the reopened London store for £214.99, I found that other retailers are selling it for around £190. Not sure why, as the pricing is usually quite consistent on new sets. So I was quite frustrated by that. But don't regret the buy. Love the modulars! Great review as always.
Yeah I don't know if other retailers will raise the price. I work for argos and I got mine from argos with my staff discount just now because we get 15% this weekend (normally it's just 10%) got it for £161.50, the perks of retail
it doesn't look as good next to the Modulars as I thought. It's a different scale - It could look great next to the 3in1 creator townhouses! Maybe a updated comparison on your website/short vid?
I love the building and the set. However, I personally feel like they could have done better with the minifigures. I was disappointed when I checked what they have. Here is why : 1. I don't think the variants of Doctor Strange were as appealing than what I was expecting. They looked a bit dull and repetitive for me. 2. Bald Wong is fine. But I personally love when he has his buzz cut hairpiece. 3. They could have done better with the Scarlet Witch and Mordo. They look off without the leg printings, and I wish they added the red skirt for the Scarlet Witch. 4. They should've included an exclusive Ancient One minifigure because it would've made more sense including her than adding characters from Infinity War such Iron man, Spider man, and Ebony Maw. 5. I'm okay with the Iron man helmet. But I wish he had some arm printing.
It's expensive but it's clearly one that is worth that price, you get a full building and not just a facade. Now if LEGO would just do more prints and less stickers at this level of price. At least the removable walls are of a common grey color, wouldn't be hard to get the spare pieces to make another non-portal version to fill one in.
Love the build, but man these figures feel lacking. For 240 GBP I was hoping for so much more (minifigures wise), we could have gotten the villain from the first movie, the ancient one, Thor, Loki. But even if no extra figs were added, even if it was just a waist cape for Wanda, printed legs for Ebony Maw, the accurate skin colour and outfit colour for dead strange, leg printing for Mordo and printed rune spell dishes, it would have felt so much better. I adore the look of this build, but it could have been so much better unfortunately.
Wasn’t keen for £215. But then I found a local deal in the UK: buy anything(!) in Sports Direct and you got 20% off the more standard UK retail price. So £190 on the sticker became £152. Much more palatable! Looking forward to building this with the nipper.
I really like the overall look of the set, but I’m not into the MCU at all, so for me it’d just be another modular. At which point the high cost for what you’re getting, not even thinking about the extra cost and effort required to remove the “play features”, is just too much. Maybe if I can get a good deal on it somewhere down the line, but definitely not for full price.
amazing how extra pieces of moulded plastic would add too much to the cost to make the interior make sense. even one stud would be better than hitting the door on the stairs.
The images of this set made it look like Spider-Man would use normal blue rather than the usual dark blue which got me very excited because it would have made a very accurate Homecoming suit, which is one I want very much. Sad to see he continues to be dark blue, but at least it's not one single figure I really want in such an expensive set.
It's a shame they didn't use the 6 studs of width in the alleyway to give more depth to the building. That would have given more room for the stairs and the walkway around the top. Otherwise it's a really cool set.
I went to my Lego Store to get this set and it said on the website that they had it but they didn’t, it sold out! I was really disappointed because I wanted this set all summer so instead I got the new AT-TE and the X1 Ninja Charger which are both really good. Instead I’m going to save up more money and just buy it at a different store because it was really disappointing so I’m happy I got the 2 sets I didn’t mean to get and I will still get the Sanctum once I save up enough money, I promise.
It is actually surprisingly disappointing in many ways. Firstly and most obviously, it doesn't complete the corner but creates an alleyway. The stairs on both the ground and first floor are just terrible. Both the two bottom floors have almost no space and the kitchen area doesn't connect to the house (ditto the other area behind). I really dislike the removable walls, and the fact that at least one portal has to be open. And the one play feature - the alternate dimensions door - doesn't even make the scene properly. Why a black street light? Lego, what were you thinking? My view is that it is a simple but attractive front of what could have been, but isn't, a great modular, at a very high price. My impression is that, at a minimum, the whole thing needs to be re-built to the back of the base plate, to give sufficient room to the two lower floors. Sad.
This is one of those gorgeous sets I would love if i could afford, and if I felt better about the price to value offering. But I always learn more from seeing your video than I can predict from pictures alone
How do the minifigures go to the top floor? There does not seem to be any stairs. I'm surprised you didn't discuss this. There is also no roof access, but that is less of an issue in my opinion.
I think the shoulda left out the back ally and increased the interior space. So the stair case didn’t slam right into the front door. Seems very easy to do wasted opportunity.
This is the first set I’ve bought over $100 on day one of release. Absolutely worth it as well. It was a fun build and beautiful display piece. Unfortunately, I don’t apply stickers, so some details are a bit plain.
This is a great build. However, I'm on the last bit, last sticker. It looks like I misused sticker 43, yet can't find where it goes. I have one sticker left, 22, but looked through the book and don't see where that's supposed to be. I'm pretty irritated but hoping it's just human error on my part
Completely agree with the 4 studs extra in the back. The cost was $200-$210 was before LEGO got greedy. The set looks great besides all the modulars besides the hotel which frankly still doesn't fit.
I think it would be nice if lego started adding the removable wall sections to the main modular theme too to make it easier to admire the internals of them
Not a Marvel fan at all but I love “spookier” sets like the haunted house so this definitely interests me. The price is so crazy though but since I’m not at all a marvel fan, I was thinking on selling the figs to get some of that money back
I say it depends. What are you a bigger fan of? Doctor Strange? The Sanctum is a great building that has great moments from MCU Doctor Strange. Spider-Man? The Daily Bugle is an amazing build, quite large (especially when put next to the Sanctum Sanctorum) that shows off great moments from Spider-Man history. Ninjago? City Gardens is one of the best (in my opinion) builds from Ninjago history. And given its a lego property, you get more stuff for a cheaper price!
That really depends. What are you looking for particularly? Cause they’re all good at different things. The Sanctum is a modular, the Bugle comes with tons of amazing minifigures, and the Gardens is just massive with lots of awesome details.
It’s simple Lego price sets individually based on popularity, the sanctum is the best marvel set ever made, for that reason it’s $250 plus it came out with the Dr Strange 2 movie hype
If I remember correctly, Bruce currently operates out of a brownstone in the comics because a large part of his wealth was lost and he lost the mansion. So they could do that? Or maybe a Wayne Tower or Hall of Justice set?
Amazon in UK has this for 50 quid cheeper, they never usually have them cheeper Makin it £165 which is a lot easier to swaps and on par with other modulars. Zavvi has it reduced too. Haven't seen a new big Lego set come out and be reduced so quick and by so much, almost a quarter of its price.
Looks good, but why did they design two bookcases with identical coloured "book" layouts? I guess you can swap tiles around, but it feels like an oversight to me.
Kind of odd how LEGO includes an historically accurate Viking helmet in this set, yet still uses the historically inaccurate helmet in the actual Viking Ship set from the Creator 3-in-1 line.
I believe because this is supposed to be a specific helmet (a Black Knight easter egg from the first DS film) whereas the 3-in-1 is a fantasy-themed set (seeing as how all 3 builds include mythical creatures) and not focused on accuracy
You can't compare the staircase/entrance way in the sanctum to that of the boutique hotel from earlier this year. To say it's a night and day difference is the biggest understatement going lol.
I don’t understand why Ebony Maw and Ironman are included? I understand the idea of having characters from earlier movies to make it easy to stage it in an earlier time period, but there’s just so little connection between either of those characters and the Sanctum. I’m trying to remember if Ironman/Tony even has any scenes inside the Sanctum? Thor and Loki at least have a significant scene or two in the Sanctum. And of course there’s the Ancient One. Or we could’ve gotten America to round out the characters from the latest movie.
Thanks Jang. Great review. I do like it but I have the first. I don’t think I’ll be lego shopping for a little while because my UCS AT-AT arrived yesterday.🤠
I think Lego did about as good as they could and still put out a decent yet affordable set. Yes they could have made it in scale, but would we have spent $500+ on a modular set that most of us are probably going to set in a city build and not really play with. Of course the great thing about Lego is that we can build our own Sanctum with a couple Bricklink orders and the pieces from this set. My only real complaint is the stickers. For the price, Lego, imo, should have given us printed pieces.
I am disappointed there isn’t room for mini-figs to be posed inside near the furniture. I play the waiting game on prices I feel inflated a bit. I am buying kits I like post-release like one to two years out. I am wanting a table set up for a couple storylines that do not have dependance on the Marvel Universe. Thanks for a thorough review.
Edit, did they feel they needed to get that alley that wide to give room for the monsters tentacles to stay inside the baseplate? I just saw that when you put it next to the modular. I feel so sad they didn´t use a bit more of sidewalk and back alley, to get a hugely better building. The amount of design time it must have cost to fit everything so cramped together going back and forth between variants before making a decision on the final design, would have payed hansomly for the maybe 100 pieces they´s need to fill the gaps through all the floors. Especially when the second floor would not need that much extra when the staircase would come 2 studs free from the doors. I also miss a door from the front to the backrooms in the bottom floor. I am not a marvel fan, but as a lego fan i would have loved this building if it was just that much better and cheaper.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your reviews.
After watching your review, I have learned to shift the stickers a little bit for the doorway trick. Thanks Jang!
Its more spacious on the inside than I thought, but I see what people are talking about when they say its off scale on the outside, and its still got awkward places for minifigs. If they made it a bit bigger those space saving features would have made this a great display piece AND playset.
The differences in sidewalk size doesn't bother me that much. Buildings in real life aren't all uniform in real cities.
This is why I stay away from licensed sets and only really get them when I have a good reason to
Agreed. If this were from a less known theme or a Lego original theme, it would likely cost $200
true but 2.7k pcs to $250 is pretty good for a theme like this, star wars is often well above the 10 cents/part ideal. If you like this set you're not totally getting ripped off compared to other post price hike lego.
Oh boy a piece price kid lol
I know I outright _refuse_ to pay it. Even if I have to wait over a year to get my hands on a set, with the way they price them, if it isn't on discount, I don't want it. On the other hand getting an AT-ST Raider for $28 is awesome, waiting is worth it.
Wow, compared to the lighthouse this is actually looking cheap now. A few months back I felt like this was expensive. Really goes to show how much those price increases are affecting perception of sets
This set really didn’t need that back alley and could have used the full depth of the baseplate to make more space within the building. I’ll be waiting on this as it’s not exciting enough to buy right away and there are other sets with more value I’d rather have that have been out for longer.
So you wanted an even more expensive set instead of the alley
Problem is if they made the building better, maybe they can charge easily $275 us or even 300
That would have made for a set that's a good bit more expensive, which definitely would have made your price complaints even worse
Or the alley being three studs max.
I know it would have dramatically increased the price even more, but the main building really should have used the extra 6 studs of space in the back. Every level would have looked more properly spacious with those 6 studs worth of extra space inside, especially the first floor with the staircase
Picked this up for £135 only this week, in the UK. Was originally £215. So for the price I got it, can’t complain
I love that one of the cases just holds a fire extinguisher, having those pop up in almost every marvel set is one of my favorite details
The sanctum sanctorum would work really well next to the downtown diner with that alley
I appreciate the extended explanations of value, it really needs to be talked about
I'm not a modular buildings guy, but this one really offers so much more play value than I normally associate with those sets!!
I love all the minor details in this! For example the Shady Acres sign in the dumpster is a reference to the retirement home Odin was meant to living at in Thor: Ragnarok - in the film the building was being demolished in front of Thor and Loki.
Also - the poster in the back for the Schwarma joint - a reference to a post-credits scene where the avengers are sat eating schwarma
Love that Viking helmet. Wish they included it in the new Creator Viking set.

Yeah this is expensive but for once I don't mind because it looks this good from all angles, it's not a flat 2d face. It's big, and well detailed
I really appreciate your reviews! It always lets me know what I want to buy and what I don’t want to buy. I’ve been watching for a while. Thank you!
I wasn't going to buy this, but I just might now. There is so much more going on here than I otherwise would have imagined, especially the ability to customise the exterior of it in terms of portal placement. GLADoS would be proud.
yes! we finally got the open and close iron man helmet back.

My favorite reviewer on TH-cam for a reason. Definitely agree with price concerns
Once again, a professional and objective review👍
What is disappointing is that this is one of those sets rumored to have originally been priced lower ($210 USD) but was subject to the recent price hike and was bumped up to $250. Honestly, even $210 feels too much for this set but makes it slightly more forgivable.

I love this set but I don’t like the new head they use for spidey so I bricklinked the homecoming one
I just started building this one! Can't wait to see it next to the bugle 🤤

The Lion Knights castle imo is the best set of the past year(s). I build the diagon before and the amount of stickers was absolutely gutting.
I think that’s apples to oranges given that the castle is another $150
While I completely agree any “premium” set, whether that is defined by price or by target audience, should in principle have no stickers at all, for something like this that is based off of 3rd party entertainment IP and needing a *lot* of unavoidable source material references/details, I can’t be too upset about stickers in sets like this and the Bugle. @@snerpax9113 it’s not a different scale, it looks good next to other Modular’s
I putted mine next to PS - it looks great!!! They are in the same scale, don't know what you're talking about...
We need to see the Ghostbusters team up with Strange and Wong to save New York…
I love the building and the set. However, I personally feel like they could have done better with the minifigures. I was disappointed when I checked what they have.
Here is why :
1. I don't think the variants of Doctor Strange were as appealing than what I was expecting. They looked a bit dull and repetitive for me.

thank you for review, great set currently for £140 in UK so about $173

I was hoping for an exclusive Strange from Ragnarok that had the yellow gloves since that’s the only time he’s worn them in the MCU

I had no idea how small it was. Pretty neat how universal this is to be used in Lego and in any MCU movie
in Germany, the set could thankfully be pre-ordered from retailers for 186€, because they kept the original price and then gave a 15% discount on top.
amazing how extra pieces of moulded plastic would add too much to the cost to make the interior make sense. even one stud would be better than hitting the door on the stairs.

I’m on the fence about this set. Few they should have done away with the alley and expanded the building all the way to edge of the plate.
The fact that you have to go straight up the stairs when entering is hilarious to me
I got this for 160€ so I'm quit happy :D
I really like the bugle because you can just pop the front off, this seems a lot less accessible
This is the first set I’ve bought over $100 on day one of release. Absolutely worth it as well. It was a fun build and beautiful display piece. Unfortunately, I don’t apply stickers, so some details are a bit plain.
Why don’t you apply stickers out of interest?
All it needed to be a perfect set is +4 studs of the building.
Cool set, but are you going to be reviewing the Lion knights castle? Would love a review on that one.
This is a great build. However, I'm on the last bit, last sticker. It looks like I misused sticker 43, yet can't find where it goes. I have one sticker left, 22, but looked through the book and don't see where that's supposed to be. I'm pretty irritated but hoping it's just human error on my part
28:23 It’s Squidward
Hi Jang, great review, great final words!
I feel it's too compressed, it needs an extra 16-studs
Completely agree with the 4 studs extra in the back. The cost was $200-$210 was before LEGO got greedy. The set looks great besides all the modulars besides the hotel which frankly still doesn't fit.
A common theme for large LEGO sets: I don't want it, but I'm glad it exists
14:40 is Wong’s handwriting the same as Winnie the Pooh’s hunny jars in his set? Is Wong Pooh? Multiverse tie up now Disney owns both?!?!
I think it would be nice if lego started adding the removable wall sections to the main modular theme too to make it easier to admire the internals of them
watching this review having finally got round to buying it. I wonder if the pricing compared to modulars was set high ready for discounting
Not a Marvel fan at all but I love “spookier” sets like the haunted house so this definitely interests me. The price is so crazy though but since I’m not at all a marvel fan, I was thinking on selling the figs to get some of that money back
I love Lego 100% already
I was hoping you would compare this to the hotel.
Wonder what I can do with the 2 of the older sets with this. Maybe something is out there
Great magic show, so many sets and so few $$$$.
I have a question: What is the best Lego set to buy; Sanctum Sanctorum, Daily Bugle or City Gardens?
I'd say Gardens > Bugle > Sanctorum, but I'm not a big Marvel guy lol. But that's my opinion on just the value/coolness of the sets
That bookshelf is sooo much better than the one from the bookshop modular.
It’s simple Lego price sets individually based on popularity, the sanctum is the best marvel set ever made, for that reason it’s $250 plus it came out with the Dr Strange 2 movie hype
About the tesseract/minecraft head in the booklet it says there's hidden infinity stones about
absolutely love the movie modulars trend! It would be cool to get a batman themed one, but im not really sure what building they'd do
If I remember correctly, Bruce currently operates out of a brownstone in the comics because a large part of his wealth was lost and he lost the mansion.
That's because this is 18+ and the other one is a set aimed at kids :).
our favorite minifig advocate! :)
Nice set def keen to get would be keen to add another storey or two
You can't compare the staircase/entrance way in the sanctum to that of the boutique hotel from earlier this year. To say it's a night and day difference is the biggest understatement going lol.
This modular will look good in any Lego city setup.
I really think for 250 is really good. Just considering the prices of modular buildings who are in general a lot smaller.
Could have added a meditation room and make it more roomier on the inside.
I would love to see a Rick and Morty lego set!!!! That would be epic!
they shoulda have taken out those extra rooms on the first floor to allow more space for the foyer
I do not understand Lego pricing as this was discounted to £190 on the day of release here in the UK. Great set though
I hope we get that Scarlet Which hair in a cheaper set at some point because it would make the CMF Scarlet Which even better than it already is.
Anyone remember that we were supposed to get a $500 DC set or did that turn into just a rumor.
Not a fan of this marvel set but managed to buy it for £148 in the UK.....Couldn't say no at that price..
