This song was about their record label wanting them to do what the record label wanted them to do, but they stay true to themselves and their style.
They won’t read this
Can you imagine, 2 of the coolest song writers ever and some suit wants you do do it their way. I can’t go for that!!!!
The record company or Gino the manager?
You sure it wasn't about eating the back door? 🤣
yeah... so many of those artist got owned...
This song had a very, very rare accomplishment. It was a hit on the adult contemporary charts, the R&B charts, the rock charts, the dance charts, and, of course, the pop charts. A rare feat indeed! 😆
Memories of 1981 flooding back - As new mum of a 6-month-old baby in Nov 1981, I remember changing nappies, feeding and bathing my now 41-year-old daughter while hearing this on the radio or MTV - in 1981 MTV was my escape to the real world.
Sweet memories
They started that trend of saying...no can do
To or from?
Hall & Oates had a slew of hits from the 70's into the 80's. This a great one from 1981.
Per Songfacts, John Oates elaborated on the song's theme of individuality and personal choice in a Billboard interview: "The theme is sort of ongoing with us, that people should think for themselves, do what they believe. They shouldn't act or do things just because other people do, or because the government says to do it or because their fathers and mothers say this is the right thing. People have to be able to assess each situation, based on their own beliefs, and not just follow along."
like taking the varkseen
words to live by
Thanks for your reaction to this one! Darryl Hall has a great internet program called "Live From Darryl's House" where he invites some great bands to have dinner and hang out for a jam session. If you have never checked it out you may want to pack a suitcase before you go to his site as it is addicting--I was up all night the first time I checked it out!
I love the episode where he sings this song with Cee Lo Green!
Me too. Watch all the time. Phenomenal.
I was going to say the same thing! Live at Darryl's House is as B & L says "a vibe"
De La Soul sampled this song to perfection in their track, “Say No Go.”
Every DeLa song should have a reaction vid right after the sample.

THE king of blue eyed soul. The phenomenal mr. Hall.
Great song! Fun fact: Michael Jackson once told Hall & Oates that this inspired him to create "Billie Jean."
Now listen to "Private Eyes" or "Kiss On My List" next. Some classics there!
I love the Philly soul sound! Hall & Oates are so excellent!
Yup, they met at Temple University in Philly, circa 1970, and 16 years later they were the # 1 selling duo of all time!
Hall & Oates were the most successful duo of all time because they truly liked and respected each other. They realized they had different strengths and knew that together they were better off. Plus they were supportive of each others side projects cause they knew it would end up making them better artists in the long run.
And they had great musical backgrounds and influences.
That was definitely true. But 🚫NO🚫 longer... Court battles ensued recently, restraining orders including.
This song is super catchy. And the sax solo is next level.
It’s in the lyrics.. “use my body, now you want my soul” it’s about the recording industry trying to control them and their lives as artists…
I have always called this the best Casio keyboard song ever. I had the tape which this is from, Private Eyes. I wore it out. it is was so good. this song is deceptionly smooth. Just like Hall and Oates as a group. Such a great song and takes me back as a kid listening to this on my Walkman or tape player.
This is one of if not the most sampled song of all time.
“Sunrise” by Simply Red
Gotta love some Hall and Oats.
This song has such a cool groove and rhythm to it.
You guys should react to more Hall & Oates…
"Sara Smile", "Rich Girl", "Kiss On My List", "Private Eyes", "One on One", "Family Man", "Say It Isn't So", "Out of Touch", "Adult Education", "Did It In A Minute"
🎸🤘
Loooove Hall & Oates, always have! Try "Rich Girl" next you guys, if you haven't already!
These guys are beasts .. their music was extremely incredibly amazing.. such Fire 🔥 tracks
Still on my playlist. This song was thrown together, and it's always fantastic.
They used a preloaded keyboard drum, because they thought this would be a demo, but it turned out so good, they didn't change a thing.
Confusing? Yes. It doesn't really explain much. She doesn't get his soul. We get to hear it, though.
Hypocritical? Yes. He "can't go, for just repeating the same old lines", then he repeats the line from the previous verse. That's hilarious!!!
Still the ultimate jam?
Yes.
This song was a guilty pleasure for me...mainly because it was so good to roller skate to
In 2003, the band Simply Red incorporated parts of the Hall & Oates song and some of its lyrics into their song Sunrise.
This was Hall & Oates' first record (after a slew of hits) to also hit #1 on the R&B chart. They previously hit #1 R&B as writers of Tavares' "She's Gone" in 1974.
When that bass line hit, the entire club would get on the dance
floor.
His voice is amazing
Blue Eyed Soul at its best. #1 pop and #1 soul. One six number one pop hits from the greatest duo of all time!
These guys were so big in the 80's. Their songs were all over the radio. I saw them live once and almost got high from all the people smoking. LOL
Love Hall & Oats. Many memories.
THE JAM. Roland CompuRhythm, funky Korg bass, wood block, crystalline synth lick, and syncopated guitar. Michael Jackson swiped it for “Billy Jean.” I think it's about their record company.
Please keep reacting to them every so often. They were amazing in the 80's and Daryl Hall even went solo during that time. They have many great hits. Try "Adult Education" sometime.
The Harmonies on that song are sooooo Good 😂
H&O had many hits, one right after another, and I don't think anyone was played on the radio as much as they were during their peak years. From 1974 to 1991 they had 29 Top 40 songs, 16 of which were Top Ten and 6 of those were #1 on the Billboard charts (including this one). Everyone will have their favorites, but you chose a good one here.
This song has not only been sampled, but Simply Red used it as a backing track for their song Sunrise.
Their record label wanted them to cut a pop record and wanted them to sing and dance, basically sell out and they said no
Hall & Oates are very influential and sampled by alot Hip-Hop artists especially this Era in the '80s from acts like Del LA Soul to Wu-Tang Clan.
I put these guys greatest hits on, the other day at work and it lasted for hours. Which means a four hour concert by me singing playing air guitar playing percussion and dancing, while cooking.
Another popular song at the roller rinks - so fun to skate to!
Always takes me back to the Club days! Great song! 👍👍👍
They were my first ever concert. Still love their sound to this day. Great song!
Hey guys! The complete title of this song is "I Can´t Go For That (No Can Do)". Cheers!!!!
❤❤❤❤ Love these 2 always !!! You need to check out them doing, Me and Mrs Jones !!!! Also ""I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" was a phrase Daryl Hall used when he was pressured to go along with the crowd against his wishes. "
The way I hear it is maybe they were friends or were cool and dated a while or something, then it got serious in a way he wasn't ready for. You guys are awesome. Love this song and your reactions. Genuine.
one of the best songs of the early 80's hall and oates were cranking out hits like no ones business back then
I love this song so much - pop bliss!
There's a live version of this song with c-lo they did at hall's house that is awesome.
“Could be pegging. Who knows?”
😂
Superb choice, great song by them. Wish you would react to the group "Player" and their song "Baby Come Back".
Hall & Oates were an underrated group. If you guys liked this, they have more then a few more to check out.
I don’t think they were underrated, I think the most successful duo all time speaks for itself.
Best recording duo...sold a few records back in the day.
Has Brad heard "Maneater" yet?? 🤔
Everyone I have ever known got this much loved and covered hit. Though I've never know anyone with a tin ear AND no soul.
No.1 Pop song for a Long time months in 1981, the year I graduated HS, I heard it so many times then I got sick of it, listened again years later, Great Song, end of the Disco Days music.
For a while in the early 80s, every "adult contemporary" song had to have sax to get radio play.
As a old school punk, Hall an Oats ia guilty pleasure favorite of mine.
Haha! Brad says "I dont know but I'm glad to hear it". Freaking hysterical almost made me spit out my coffee. I saw some other peaple recommend Daryl's House I really think you two would luv it. Congrats on the baby.
Hi Brad & Lex, While your analysis was very interesting and showed that you both have quite the vivid imagination, this track was about the record label or their manager in the music industry wanting them to do some things that they absolutely were not willing to do; this is actually a protest song, as they stuck to their guns and they stayed true to their convictions as artists!!! And they did it with so much smoothness, soul & style!!! Mic Drop!!! 🎤
Daryl would go to war with any Music Agents that wanted to dilute their great style. He knew exactly where he wanted to go regarding style and lyrics. That is the theme of this song!
Hearing someone say, "Absolutely NOT", never sounded so nice. Such a nice way to tell someone to take a hike.
Now listen to the live version with Cee-lo Green at Daryl's house...THAT one is my favorite version!!!
Reminds me of Meat Loaf's "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." Clever word play.
My most favorite song is Out Of Touch!! Love all their songs
Michael Jackson was inspired by the opening - he used it for" Billie Jean"
Rabbit hole for sure
they still hold the title for the most top 10 hits of any duo in American history
thanks as always!
You definitely need to listen to their song "Out Of Touch"
Bob Fossil Dancing to this is the best thing ever
Yessss!
When Michael Jackson was working on His Monumental "Thriller" Album, With Super Genius Quincy Jones, Jones called up Eddy Van Halen , to put in a guitar Solo on 'Beat It", He did it with no charge, but He changed the tempo, of the song and layed on His Great solo. It was a Mego #1 Hit. Eddy said He was talking to Quincy about the Record, Quincy told Eddy that Michael Ripped off Hall and Oats, "Cant go for that" and used it on Billy Jean. Its un mistakeable Jackson did, its obvious.
Michael told daryl during the recording of we are the world that he was inspired by I can't go for that bassline to make Billie Jean to which daryl responded that it was OK because he was inspired by another song's bass line for I can't go for that anyway.
@@keithroberts4952 This was released in 81, slow down the opening synth sequence and you have the bass line for Billie Jean. Quincy produced the Donna Summer version the following year.

"good artists borrow, great artists steal"...
I think her had already given her his body, but was hesitant to give up control of his soul.
What an incredibly great vocal performance and their musicianship is top draw.
Eating the backdoor ? Wow I didn't see that one coming.
I love Hall and Oates! They can do no wrong! He said you got the body, now you want my soul. I believe he will not give her his soul meaning she’s trying to corrupt him in some way! ❤️❤️
Hey !! the beginning of this song sounds like Simply red - Sunrise. I guess Simply red sampled it from Hall and Oats.😏
Love this tune..... Works well on the dancefloor with It's different for girls from Joe Jackson , Lovers holiday from Change, Lido Suffle from Boz Scaggs and Bakers Street from Gerry
Guaranteed enjoyment I imagine 95% of people have to like it, its to smooth and soothing.
You should check out Daryll Hall's solo song Dreamtime. It is so underrated and unappreciated.
I remember when I first heard that song and had to play it over and over, lol.
The lyrics say “You got my body, now you want my soul.” That’s what they can’t go for.
lol - your interpretation of the lyrics meaning had me rolling!
"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)"
Easy, ready, willing, overtime
Where does it stop
Where do you dare me
To draw the line
You've got the body
Now you want my soul
Don't even think about it
Say, no go
I, I-I, I 'll do anything
That you want me to do
Yeah, I, I-I, I'll do almost anything
That you want me too, ooh
Yeah
But I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that
Can't go for that
Can't go for that
Can't go for that
I can go for being twice as nice
I can go for just repeating
The same old lines
Use the body
Now you want my soul
Ooh, forget about it
Now say, no go
I, I-I, I 'll do anything
That you want me to do
Yeah, I, I-I, I'll do almost anything
That you want me too, ooh
Yeah
But I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that
Can't go for that
Can't go for that
Can't go for that, yeah
[Instrumental Interlude]
Yeah, I, I-I, I 'll do anything
That you want me to do
Yeah, I, I-I, I'll do almost anything
That you want me too, ooh
Yeah
But I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that, nooo
(No)
No can do
I can't go for that
Can't go for that
Can't go for that
Can't go for that, yeah..
H
check out Cee Loo Green's cover of this when he was on Daryl's house.
Absolute classic piece of music here.
I know what I´m talking about.
Made in Sweden.
Philadelphia's finest 🎉
When Brad bob's his head a little more than his usual, you know he likes the music ;-)
My song! As others have said, it was about their record label.
De la soul used this in one of hits.😎😎😎
“Out of touch” is my fav ❤️ Also Daryl is taking about the music industry trying to exploit them as artists.
There's a "dance mix" version of that song that I think is pretty cool as well
@@stevemd6488 Cool, by who is it?
@@lpita2431 actually there's a bunch now, I didn't even realize that! Anyway the one that I had the original CD is th-cam.com/video/LkYVwwj5wyc/w-d-xo.html
@@stevemd6488 Thanks 🙏
Funny That You Should Mention Like A "Dream Song",, From His Solo Career,, Daryl Hall "Dreamtime"
"eating the backdoor or something".
That was funny.
I've watched a ton of your videos, and this might be the best one yet.
LMAO @ Brad talking about "eating the back door". 💀
You've got to react to the live version of this song with Cee Lo.
It’s so funky!
More Daryl's House
You got my body and now you want my soul. Can’t do that. No can do.
Yeah that simply red sunrise vid is very nice as well
"Haul en Oats" as I once though of them. Very Very Good !
The part where it’s saying “I’ll do anything you want me to” sounds like Al Green.
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
Brad &Lex, you'll love their "Sara Smile" and "Kiss On My List"!!!
🤖
Was never a big Halls and Oates Fan. But this was a pretty song!
They were major villains, according to the web video series Yacht Rock HD.
Brad with the self-respect.
Everytime i do this at karoake its a big hit, but and everyone loves the finger wave on the "no can do"
Can't go for selling his soul to her.
An often-forgotten song of theirs is "Do What You Want, Be Who You Are". I don't see anybody reacting to it, but I hope you guys can be the first. Love me some H&O!
