This year marks 10 years (a whole decade) of being a professional graphic designer for me. I have never been able to draw/sketch much more than a stick figure, and it has never affected my job. All that to say, if you’re not a good artist with pen & paper, don’t let that deter you from becoming a digital designer.

really? Im a senior highschool student and is currently taking online classes on Graphic Design to see if it will interest me or not and it did. But then I suddenly realize that I wasn't good in drawing at all especially compared to my classmates who I would say were really really good. I'm still giving it a try and learning about it but the idea that I can't draw really makes me question if I should be doing this or not.

Alex Jolley can I ask? With all the technology and different methods, does one still actually need drawing skills (with pen and paper etc.) at all?

I am a graphic designer student right now and I am decent at drawing. Even though graphic design is not about drawing, I think that knowing how to draw will make you a better graphic designer. For instance, for my advertising design class I did a project where I designed my own characters for posters and that was my initial idea at first and I sticked to it. On the other hand, I would have not stick to it if I was not good at drawing. Therefore, I believe that in some works/projects you will be required to draw good, especially when you are a student because when you are out in the real world, you can simple hire other creatives and do that specific task that you want to include in the design.

Being good a drawing does not make you a better Graphic Designer. Your ability to create and develop visual solutions to briefs makes you a good designer.
This is done through research, understanding, creative and conceptual thinking, and the design process.
Drawing to design is just a means to organically play with your ideas on paper to collaborate and see if they work as a possible solution and worth developing further on the computer.
If you are talented in drawing and can indeed render your own artwork assets to include in your finished visual solution that it great, but its not necessary. As you said, in the industry if a designer believes an illustrative elements is required to produce the final visual solution then indeed it would be tasked to an illustrator who specializes in drawing to render art.

    • @camilochaj2823
      @camilochaj2823 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Perhaps I did not explained myself well. I know that graphic design is about solving a problem visually, using many theories and rules and that there is a lot of research involved in the process and not just draw "pretty" things. What I meant is that being able to solve the clients solution visually and incorporating your artistic abilities on projects at hand will help you a lot, therefore, make you a better graphic designer. I never said being able to draw good and being a mediocre in providing solutions to the clients makes you a better graphic designer.

For me, being good at drawing or at least knowing the fundamentals of drawing such as perspectives is great. Because it means that you tend to view things better too and can see something in different perspectives. In fact, drawing itself requires some knowledge and logic and not just pure creativity.

I totally agree with you, and after some experience I came to the same conclusion, but If manipulation is part of Graphic design as I always thought... Then it will benefit heavily from drawing skills, Like perspective, light and shadows, rendering forms... etcetera. and by the way your videos are informative, cut right to the point and your presentation is awesome. Your channel is one of the best, so keep it up.

I guess I'd say, as long as your pre-design sketches are decent enough to show a client the general idea at hand, you're golden. They'll only see the sketches you want to show them, so... It's kind of a "yesno"

Great drawing, mate. I use pencils, markers and fine-liners on paper when I draw to design. As for drawing to render art, I use pencils, pens and markers, or Illustrator and Photoshop, depending what I am designing. I also use a graphics tablet do do both drawing to design and render art. Do you use a graphics tablet as well?

Hey Gareth, sketching has long been my weakest skill and no matter what I do it remains awful. Any suggestions for courses to help me achieve this? I began illustration but it's just not the same - I remain inept and can only get my ideas down using illustrator and of course that takes way too long. Its really stopping me applying for a better job because I know that's what an agency will want.

Fact: you can learn how to draw :) if you have a creative mindset then drawing is just a technique you can build up to express your creativity. i've seen people who were considered not to be talented, becoming great and skilled artists, thanks to passion and dedication :)

TheMexart that’s unheard of, but a legitimate reason. Thank you!!!

Hi Gareth, your video is very helpful. Thank you. I wanna learn graphic design and become a real graphic designer but dunno from where I should start it. Some people say it is possible to learn it own self, but I think it's better to join an official course. Please gimme a piece of advice for a person who wanna start to become a graphic designer. I really need real guidance for a beginning. Thank you!

Firstly thanks a lot for the videos. Actually I have not drawn almost anything. I want to follow my passion for graphic design. I am 28 and I want to speed up the process to change my career. Can I learn sketching by my self or I should take courses?

I love designing too much ..and i want to be a designer But I suffer from my responsibilities as a mother .. Is loving design enough to keep going on and learn more ? Will it be many years before I mastered anything? Thanks

I'm 16 and an art and design student in senior high school. And i want to be a graphic designer or a film and video editor, my problem is i can't draw but can do a basic calligraphy. Looking at my classmates was making me a bit unconfident. Now, i want to learn how to draw and to be creative enough even tho i think it's a bit too late to start. Where do i start first? What books should i read first? Thanks for those who will answer :)

hi! im also 16 and apparently planning on becoming a graphic designer too. I hope I'm not too late to answer this question. all I can say is, look up for classes or books online (Skillshare, linkedin, or whatever) you can get your hands on and study the fundamentals first if you haven't. you don't know how much it'll help you (cuz it did help me a lot on making things cleaner, and get right on track) and don't forget to practice over and over again! cheers :)

or, even more effectively, contribute to your school's event or even participate in competitions. it helps you gain more experience, and also the ability of working under pressure (lol) good luck!

I’m 17 and I’m about to take on a foundation in design next year and yes I’d like to continue my path as a graphic designer. Here I have the same problem: everybody said I’m a creative/artistic person but I’m just not that good at drawing, will that be an obstacle ?

@@paper3993 I'm 17 as well and I must say even though you suck at drawing (cause i know i do) It can improve by practicing.

Hey thank-you so much. I too feel having knowledge of how to sketch and communicate is essential. But I don't know from where I learn and practice sketching, I want to be good at it. But I don't know how to sketch properly
