For someone who is born in a jail and never had a taste of 'care' and love from other people, I can't blame him if he resorts to dedicating himself to his job as an inspector. It's his way of making up for the things he never had and and I think that bending , even for just a little bit, would break him. It takes intelligence to be that linear and be succesful at it. if you lived by the conventions in a modern society a small bend from what you believe would destroy you. I think javert is ,most often than not, exempts from rules.

This lyric change pairswith the new valjean song for the movie. They really wanted to add another layer of the story with the movie. Which I just adour. I love both versions but I connect more often to the stage version
