  • The Essence Of Winter
A real patchy winter although it started in November 23 there wasn't much to go at again until January 2024 and it only just finished at Easter, it was definitely a season of quality not quantity with some epic sunrises inversions & sunsets with new routes and skills learned, The more tests i give myself the more unfazed and at home I am in the mountains especially in winter, it just lights the passion to be in the elements more than ever, No stranger to winter camps, very experienced & well seasoned now I added the winter Bivvys to the armoury either side of the year something you will rarely see in the uk its unheard of. Taking it to the highest mountain in the uk Ben Nevis with the temps dropping to minus 10 its a totally different ball game to camps because there isn't the protection that a tent gives but i made sure i did my research and upgraded some kit and spent a very comfortable night in the snowgrave, I knew if i could do it on the Ben I could do it anywhere and its as much a mental challenge as physical these temperatures are just air and not windchill.... minus 10 with a 20mph wind gives a windchill of minus 35 so it gives you an indication of what i"m up against in the raw elements of nature.
But its the ultimate test and one that was repeated on Englands highest scafell pike and these were exactly the conditions I was chasing when I set out to experience a sunrise from a snowgrave, Absolutely mindblowing colour and intensity from that winter sunrise lighting up the snow 🥵 sights i will never forget and a real sense of achievement more so than the Ben.
The rest of Winter was spent chasing the snowline from some big hitters another double camp at Ben Nevis under the North Face and a beautiful bluebird day on ledge route, amazing route.
Another trip to the Ben guiding Patty Ryan & completing his 3 peaks challenge in some full on winter conditions and a real achievement, considering Patty said take it easy on him 12 months ago, We started on Scafell Pike unbeknown to Patty until the summit 👀 followed it up with Snowdon and a crossing of Crib Goch and finished in style with a crossing of the cmd arete to the summit a real technical 3 peaks for someone who had never been hiking before never mind graded ridges, but i knew he had it in him even though he probably questioned my sanity at times, I know he went away knowing he'd achieved something no beginners ever do. Locally I did the usual suspects Scafell via westwall and lords rake a crossing of Striding Edge standard winter fodder and the ever impressive Great Gable via Napes Needle, Sphinx Ridge and Westmoreland Crags not the best winters day but still the best route to any mountain in England
Unfortunately lost my footage of Custs Gully so wont feature and for the second winter running it just wasn't in condition and im taking it personal now it really is a unique place.
Easter saw pastures new a 7 hour drive to Dundonnell to camp the jewel of Scotland An Teallach and the most impressive view i've had the privilege to pitch a tent in front of just immense, and even more so being up there on that ridge for sunset.
The Final camp was Liathach another absolutely stunning place the scale off the charts bit patchy with snow but a double crossing on the ridge at sunset made up for that, The first camp ive ever bailed on to put it simply I couldn't be arsed listening to the tent getting battered all night 40mph winds were forecast for morning and it was already upto that at 9pm so with no back up I pitches I headed back to the van on the headlamp and I earned my bed that night😴
Winter 2023/24 comes to a close and it marks new beginnings
The wheels are in motion to learn some new skills with equipment I feel i'm going around in circles now on graded scrambles. Ive repeatedly re visited all the best edgy places on offer honing skills and confidence, right from the start i've been self taught with everything and now its time to progress and start doing some different routes that need protection, Theres a new job imminent which Im looking forward to and will also give me more freedom, and a 2 year plan to go higher than ever before on one of the most Iconic recognisable mountains in the World the training starts now lets go!
Press play for some classic winter scenes and some of the best mountains the Uk has to offer
    Winter Soldier over & out
