In April 2024, the NBA caught one of its own players gambling on himself - and few analysts were surprised. Sports gambling is booming and gambling companies are enjoying unprecedented cooperation with the sports leagues. But one of their most profitable types of bets has introduced an existential risk to sports; the player prop-bet. This video explains how these prop-bets make cheating so easy for players and how the Jontay Porter scandal could be the tip of the iceberg.

I think this is gonna be bad for the sports leagues in the long term. Before gambling was allowed fans already had suspicions of refs being crooked and certain teams being favored, allowing gambling will give us even more ammunition to throw these accusations whether it's real or not. The more people doubt the game's integrity, the lower the interest will be. Let's hope the sports leagues realize that before it's too late.

Dude was the captain of the South African cricket team in the late 90s/early noughties, was in with the bookies, got expensive leather jackets as gifts from them, fixed matches and once infamously convinced his opponents to basically forfeit half of the game and disguised it as "thinking out of the box".

You guys should also make a video about how sports betting is taking over the same space as people investing in the stock market. When you get data from how much people were spending on the stock market during the pandemic and how much people are spending on sports betting you'll see an overlap.
In Brazil they found out a surprising amount of people who were spending their government help money on sports betting instead of food and other necessities. It's becoming a serious problem not only for sports.

Here in Brazil people have spent billions this year of government aid money in these apps, a tragedy. The lower classes gets these promises of easy money (obviously a lie), while the bet companies profit astronomically and some football (maybe soccer for you) ruin the games by gambles of getting a red or yellow card, own goal... In Brazil casinos are forbidden, the bets also were, until a previous government changed and they area dominating sponsors in games. Now the government is looking for regulatory measures, since all these bets are foreign (they cannot be from here, for is forbidden), that is, money leaving the country in a billion scale.

Human brains aren't built to intuitively understand extreme odds, so if a gamble is a .000001% chance we have a hard time emotionally differentiating that from a 1% or more reasonable odds, even when we logically know we'll never win.
Most gambling is set up so you win some and lose more, so people get hooked on the feeling of the wins more than the losses. Sure they know most people will lose much more in the long term, but stories of people who win or justifications like pretending you'll stop when you're ahead, or that 'someone has to win, why not me' let people keep going.
And desperation is a huge driver; cost of living and assets have significantly outdated wage growth, so many people get desperate and feel that if they're going to be broke anyway it's worth taking a chance to become rich. If you feel like a gamble is the only way to pay off debt, or get medical care, or ever afford a home then it might seem worth it. (Tbc they're wrong, I'm not tryna defend it, just that's what people think/ feel. Addiction isn't driven by logical calculations but by our monkey brains not being designed for complex society and desperation)

This has been made blatantly obvious in recent years NFL games. Mahomes just did it a week ago, with the bet being 50yds rushing. He was at 64yds heading into the last drive and he intentionally ran backwards to kneel the ball 3 separate times, leaving him with 48yds. They were ahead by a bunch, with the other team out of timeouts, so there was no reason to run backwards instead of just kneeling when the ball was hiked.

And unlike the U.K. you guys will refuse to legislate to protect consumers due to lobbyist powers buying out your politicians.
