  • Typical story. This generator sat for years with gas in the tank and carburetor and now it will not start. Will clean it up and fire it up.

    Cranked my 17 yr old generator yesterday. I do it every few months.
    Next time we get a hurricane in S Fla, I’ll have 3 or 4 people calling me that afternoon wanting theirs fixed.
    Nope, I’m busy preparing. Get with me next week. Then I don’t hear from them until the next storm is coming. Same scenario again.
    Nice job.

    I use the same cotton swab on a drill trick to polish the needle barrel too. I dab a little brass polish onto it and clean the carb thoroughly with paint thinner. Makes the needle glide silky smooth. Best to you, mate!

Having never taken a carburetor apart before, I was able to fix mine with my modest collection of tools. Some knuckle head tried to drive the float pivot pin out with a hammer while the opposite end was on/against something like a steel vise and now both ends are mushroomed and will require some dremel grinding to remove the mushroomed ends to be able to remove the pin to access the needle and seat which seem to have excess restriction when open and trying your blow through it. It does however seat and seal off when positioned to do so.

    Few things...
    1) pick up a set of paint gun cleaning brushes from HF if you haven’t already. It’s an Assortment of sizes that work well for cleaning emulsion passage.
    2) mixture screw (black capped): snip off stops and remove and clean passages before the drills come out. Slow gen down to idle speed and adjust screw (do not have an electrical load on it during this) Usually 1/2-1 more turn out will correct the surging even at high rpm on these carbs.

    • @garny3766
      @garny3766 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Condon no need to remove plastic cap. Just snip off stop with small side cutters and screw out. Then you can remove cap if you want. But you’ll have to slot it for a screwdriver. The tougher mixture screws are on the hondas and clones. These are metal caps and yeah you have to be careful grinding/cutting the stop off. First step is just remove stop, then turn out screw and then try removing tamper proof cap.

    Hello James, what are you setting the idle mixture screw on these? I'm at 5,200 ft elevation. The Mikuni carb was really nasty from sitting so long. I've cleaned the pilot which wasn't bad but the main jet on the side was totally clogged. Had it running on carb cleaner and wanted to Idle on its own. Think it's the idle mixture screw. Was about 1 turn 1/4-1/2. Needs more with 10% ethanol fuel... I had fuel with about 1 ft of fuel hose with a funnel trying to test it since the tank is nasty.. Not sure if it's enough gravity (lb/pressure) for the carb. Same engine 297cc 9 HP Vanguard. Thank you.

    I just had the carb off of my really old Coleman Powermate 5000. The pilot jet was badly clogged or restricted. I do NOT have any wire gage drill bits. All I had were Wires pulled from a medium and quite small(toothbrush) sized HF wire brush. I could not get the smallest wire to pass lengthwise through the pilot jet. It was late at night and I couldn’t find anything wire size that was smaller. Also the needle seat while working appears quit restricted when trying to blow through it with the float hanging down or inverted and lifting up on the float to open the needle seat area. It does shut off. Also, someone before me had tried to remove the float pivot pin apparently with a small punch while the other side of the pin was resting against a metal surface probably their vise jaw. And, as any novice mechanic knows more force/ hitting the punch harder with the hammer is the first law f mechanicing. Now both ends of the pivot pin are mushroomed beyond the carb body hinge holes and I could not even rotate the pin with needle nose vice grips so the pin may be bent or slightly enlarged inside the carb body hinge hole for the float pivot pin. Probably going to try using a dremel to remove the mushroom area to see if it can be removed with punch or drift and hammer. If I have to buy a carb, are the aftermarket carbs on Amazon at $15-16 worth the attempted savings over a stated to be OEM Briggs & Stratton carb for $34-36? And, if there is a good aftermarket d you know which one is best? The engine is a B&S Vanguard 9 Hp model 185432 and while I didn’t include it here I do have a picture of the complete engine number.

    Hi again James,
    As I was burning through all your videos I thought I saw one of them with this particular model generator/engine combination. I just picked up a non-running example vintage 1999. Owner had it up for $50 but it sat there for several months before I asked and when I got there he said "it doesn't run just get it out of here". I said at least I can buy you lunch and gave him a $20. Nice guy.
    Problem is it rotates about 359 degrees, in both directions and stops. "Clunk". Piston is moving. Popped the cover and flywheel off thinking it was hitting the magneto. Nope. Valves move, intake less so. Could a valve be stuck open and clapping the piston? I'll pressurize the cylinder as I've seen you do so many times and see if i get flow at TDC. Head would be next I guess.

    • @jcondon1

    I’ve got one of these in my shop driving me crazy. It had old gas in it. The gas was just old and yellow. It hadn’t caramelized or anything that bad. I got the carb spotless. Drained and dried the tank and fuel lines. New fuel filter. New spark plug. It cranks right up and runs but it has a stutter or miss every few seconds. I replaced the carb, still the same thing. That tells me it’s probably a fire issue. Tomorrow I’m going to do a cylinder leak down test and a compression test just for the hell of it but then I’m going to start testing fire. I’ll unplug the kill wire and see if that does anything. If that doesn’t stop the miss it may be a coil problem. Do you have any advice on anything else it could be. Thanks

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a hard one to diagnose. Think you are going in the right direction. If you choke it a little does the miss go away? If not then maybe the coil, a valve adjustment or may a leaky valve. If it goes away, then running lean still.

    Most towns accept waste oil but how do people typically deal with disposal of old gas or with gas with water?

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My town collects bad gas twice a year. That said I only save the worst for recycling. I always run it through a coffee filter and run it in my lawn mower or car. If it has water, just pour the gas into a clear bottle. Let the water settle to the bottom. Pour the gas off the top into a gas can and the rest goes to recycling.

    That generator looks exactly like my Briggs & Stratton emergency generator 5250 Watt same setup same everything I'm having problems with it trying to start ,I pull on it ,I cleaned the carburetor it helped , but it takes me a lot of pulls to start and I still haven't adjusted the valves on it ,remember I'm the one that runs it all the time or should I say now semi full time, I'm running off grid pretty much, can you give me some suggestions about why it's not wanting to start you think it might be flooding ?and also a vowel adjustment? And also I guess I need to replace the spark plug I'm sure ,I cleaned it but it's got a lot of usage on it.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's almost never the spark plug, but a new one cannot hurt. Pull the engine over slowly. When you hit the compression stroke the engine should not advance without a lot more force. If you can pull through the compression easily, then might need to adjust the valves or lap them. Ideally you would to a compression test or better a leak down test to find out where things are at. How does it run once started? If good, can you load it up close to the max and does the engine stay above 58 hertz? If not, then might have a compression issue requiring a valve adjustment or the valves to be lapped.

    For setting the engine speed, why don't you instead set the engine to 60Hz while at 1/2 LOAD? It seems to me that setting the engine speed to 61Hz at NO LOAD (no useable power consumption anyway) you run a higher risk of yielding low frequency under max load conditions.

    It is surprising how people treat these fairly expensive end sensitive machines. They are not built like cars just because like cars they have a combustion engine. These machines have no protection of the mechanical parts and must be stored and used in a barn or shed of some kind. I think all sellers should inform the buyers of that.
