      @@jcondon1 Great video. I have a slightly bigger model but the same workings. I use trufuel. Its been a year, drained it and no rust. Six months sounds better but no issues. Starts, runs, generates power. No frequency issues but not the cleanest waveform on a scope compared to others. Small battery scopes are $50. Ebay DSO150. No kilowatt meter problems. Thanks to your videos someday I will dive into the carburetor. On another one I have a minor drip on the nut at the fuel tank outlet. Did you use tape or anything around the thread?

    I have a dual fuel champion generator that iron exclusively on propane. It has a metal fuel tank and I was wondering if there’s anything I should put in that fuel tank to keep any rust from developing. Your shows are always so informative and I know you must take a lot of time and setting everything up. It’s like a college class every time. So, thank you very much for your extraordinarily instructive videos.

      Store it dry. I have had excellent success doing that. And I mean completely dry. I have a large white desiccant bag that I hang right in the tank. Rust can only form when there’s water/humidity so if it’s dry in the tank, it can’t rust.
      Also run it dry and remove carb bolt to drain fuel. Keep 5 gal of gas handy for short outages. Longer outage buy what you need beforehand. Cycle in through cars every 3-4 months. My Gen always starts on first pull even after 8 months

    Thanks for the video. I tried to use my generator that had been sitting since Ian hit. Now Milton will hit and it wouldn’t start yesterday. A little starting fluid and it ran for a second, so I figured the carb was gunked up. I ran it to dry after the last time I used it, but after I tore apart the carb, I saw that the jets were clogged. A little carb cleaner and it works great now. Bring it Milton! I’m ready.

    Nice work, I put my carb parts in a plastic zip lock bag with a solution of purple power and water, then into the ultra sonic cleaner if the carb is really dirty, Works great and saves cleaning the ultra sonic cleaner so often. Always a great learning experience with your videos. I’m shocked with the lack of owner care with this type of equipment. Run it once a month till dry, do the maintenance and you have a reliable back up for a power loss than can be expensive. Why invest if you have no interest in maintains.

    I have watched quite a few of Mr Condons videos, and must say, that I am surprised at the way people treat these fairly expensive machines. People seem to think that these generators are like cars just because there is a combustion engine. But the generators are not like cars which can be put outside in the yard. The generators are not like cars which are built to withstand rain and snow and a fair amount of neglect, and yet can be expected to work well.

    Just found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching your generator series.
    The only suggestion I would have is that generators are used infrequently. Mine sits for months at a time.
    I put stabil in the fuel and ALWAYS run the carb out of gas before storing the generator.
    Months later I turn on the fuel, fill the bowl, and it starts first or second pull.

  • @rgbcolor6450
    @rgbcolor6450 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    James, I love your videos and have learned much, so with that in mind, its time for some payback. To fix a rusty gas tank, you should use Phosphoric Acid. The phosphoric acid will exchange electrons with the Iron Oxide and convert the Iron Oxide (rust) into Iron Phosphate. It does turn light gray (or sometimes dark gray) when the conversion is complete, but that Iron Phosphate will form a crystaline protective coating on any rusted steel. This coating will prevent the tank from rusting again in that spot. Phosphoric acid is sold under various names like Naval Jelly and there's even an "Iron Out" product for water softeners that's pretty high concentration and very inexpensive. Simply apply the Phosphoric acid, let sit for 10 minutes, and rinse with water. It won't rust again. Your entire car is dipped in it when its manufactured so prevent rust.
    And for those with Iron in their well water, diluted Phosphoric Acid will almost instantly remove the orange rust stains in your showers.. Just spray it on, wait 5 minutes and rinse it off.. No stains left.
    And gardens love phosphorous. Neutralize with a bit of baking soda and water your plants to get huge tomatoes.

    The killawatt brand meter might have been reading goofy because the ac power the generator made was not a nice clean sine wave, might have a lot of harmonic distortion. A regular voltmeter with freq function probably wouldn't be affected. The distortion won't bother a resistive load like space heaters or light bulbs, but could play havoc with electronic devices.

    3600 rpm is the maximum speed on small engines. Setting it at 3150-3250 on used equipment is a good idea. In this case, you have to go higher to gain the hertz.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      60 hertz is 3600 rpm. Cannot go much lower then 3500 rpm before the hertz drop to a level that could cause issues with some electronic equipment. Always see conflicting info on the. The engine manuals always say max 3600 rpm, but most generator manuals say to run at 61.5 hertz to 62.5 hertz no load which is 3690 rpm to 3750 rpm.

      Fresh fuel will keep the tank from rusting. Otherwise if you drain the tank then put some two stroke oil in the tank of maybe spray WD-40

    Hello from Greece. I do like the way you work. Thank you.1 question what does the solenoid on the carb do?

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you turn the ignition off the solenoid goes up and block the fuel flow. It prevents backfiring and prevents the engine from flooding so it is easier to restart. Once the generator head powers spawn the solenoid retracts and it is ready to start again. They usually are not necessary.

    James - during the shutdown I have watched many of your vids and those of Mustie1. It seems to me these small engine carburetors are the weakest link...why do we not come up with fuel injection for these things?

    • @jcondon1

      Some do have that now. The Honda EU7000i has it and for a while Ryobi was making one. Think it just comes down to cost. People tend to buy what costs less. Being that most small engine have carburetors the manufactures should at least put bowl drains on them all. Some do, but a lot still omit that.

    Help please... I have just finished cleaning out an identical carburetor by following this ( well done) video. However, I find myself with an extra part. It's a tiny black rubber washer about 1/4 inch diameter. It can be seen for a brief moment at the 9:55 mark of the video, then not seen again. I can't remember/ figure out where it goes. I thought it seemed likely it would be part of the pilot jet configuration but the video doesn't seem to indicate that. Also , as instructed, I blew into the carburetor and listened for air. I heard air, so i'm thinking it is a missing seal? Thanks in advance for any help.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That o-ring goes on the fuel solenoid. You can see it at the 9:20 mark. If you hear air, then either the seat is dirty or you need a new needle. This one would most likely work amzn.to/2ZMxnyM

    every tank I see you working on, it seems the cap area is manufactured as indented downward for water to build up. These things sit in bad weather conditions when running, so WHY aren’t they redesigning the shapes of these tanks where the tops aren’t holding water?

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, some are designed properly but most are not. Have seen lots of bad design on these machines. The best I think was the Ryobi 5500 watt. Where you tip the generator almost 70 degrees to move it placing the carburetor sideways over the hot exhaust. Does not seem like a good idea, would think you would have a problem if any fuel dripped out of the carb.

    I have a Westinghouse WGen7500 I bought new in 2018. Yesterday after running for several hours over 2 days I needed to add gas. I only use Ethanol free gas in my equipment. I filled the tank and tried starting it . Cranked but no start. It was warm so shouldn't have needed to be choked. I manually held choke closed to try starting, cranked no start. It is dual fuel so I hooked up propane and it started. I switched back to gas and it runs. If I shut it off and try starting on gas it won't start. I though it might be problem with spark plug so replaced the LG F7TC plug with an Autolite 63. That did not fix the problem, still have to start on propane and switch to gas. I have another problem in that it running at 63Hz producing 116 volts. I've watched many of your videos, this one popped up after looking at many Westinghouse videos. Do you know how to adjust the unit to get it's Hz to 60 and increase it's voltage from 116 to 120?

There is something screwy with that output waveform with the two meters disagreeing on the frequency. After seeing this i have a storage question then. I live in florida so my parents and I both have portable generators for hurricanes. I run the both every 3 months, keep the tanks slap full with non ethanol fuel and keep stabil in them. Every other year i complete drain and refill them. So far so good. However, the owners manuals differ on the manufacturers suggestions. One is a Generac and the other is a Cat. Both have steel tanks. One manufacturer suggest completely draining the tank and carb for storage while the other says keep them full with stabil. Which is better to prevent issues?

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Brennan I also have a metal tank on my Honda EU6500. I keep the tank full with stabilized fuel. Unfortunately ethanol free is not readily available in my area so I change the fuel out twice a year. Draining the tank will also work, but you have to get it all out. Always shut the fuel valve off. I always drain the carburetor using the bowl drain. That will get all the gas out. If you do not have a drain turn the fuel off and run it until it stalls. I have a battery tender I keep on the battery at all times. I do not start it ever unless I need it. It is probably a good idea though to make sure it still works a few times a year. The other thing I do it pull the cord until I hit the compression stroke to close the valves. And most recommend adding a tablespoon of oil down the spark plug hole. I do not do that, but it is a good idea.

    • @videodistro
      @videodistro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely drain. It's easy to add gas when needed so need reason to leave full. Plus, you're more likely to have fresh gas in your gas can. Having fuel sit in the system is always risky, no matter what. Just a bit too much sta-bil and it will turn to gel.

      Would get some of the gunk out and experiment by putting a little junk in different cups with different chemicals and see if you can find in one that will break it up. Acetone, gas, alcohol, etc. once you find something that works, let it soak in the tank for a bit. Shake it and remove the fuel petcock and drain. Spray water from the hose to get it all and let it dry in the sun.
