    • @anti-ethniccleansing465
      @anti-ethniccleansing465 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Many years ago, I gave $20k to a bunch of strangers. Like these people, it was also because an addiction - this one though was called online poker.
Why did I do it? Like them, I was in a terrible spot in my life and not thinking clearly/rationally. I’d recently undergone a disastrous failed back surgery that permanently destroyed my life, carried out by a greedy, psychopathic, corrupt surgeon. I was an absolute mess physically and psychologically. I was trying everything under the sun to distract me from my reality at that time, unable to accept what had happened to me, or cope in the slightest.
Online poker was simply one of many things I tried until I got burned out by it, but at least that poker phase was the only one that drained money from me (luckily I at least stopped whilst I still had half of my savings remaining, so it could have been even worse... I ended up needing all that money to pay for medical costs).
I didn’t have much to live for, so I can get how lonely and desperate many of these people are in these videos (especially with their lives changing drastically too, usually including a ton of grief from a spouse dying or whatnot). I went from working in a career I loved, having a very fulfilling social life and future life goals I was excited about, to becoming disabled and mostly bedridden with 24/7 chronic pain, stuck in a hell I couldn’t escape and very isolated.
It’s still very rough and lonely (it’s been 18 years since the surgery now, and I was only 28 when it happened), but I’ve become mostly accustomed to it. I will be sure to stay on my guard to never get sucked into anything like this. The good thing about being poor now though is that scammers wouldn’t be able to squeeze a dime out of me lol. They very well could try to tempt me to becoming a mule for laundering money though - so I’m glad to have learned the different ways in which they use vulnerable people.

@@anti-ethniccleansing465 so sorry this happened to you and I hope you sued the hell out of that surgeon. Things happens about 20 years ago I got caught up in psychic hot lines. Part of it was loneliness and part of it thought I could see the future with their help. And really they were just stringing me along on the phone to stay on and get more money out of me per minute. One month I got a phone bill for over $1,000 it shocked the heck out of me. And woke me up that this was ridiculous. It took me a few months to pay it off. But it was a hard lesson learned. You just love yourself and you can work with a charity or do something within you ability to do good in the world if you can. Being "poor" is not the worst thing in the world. I work with some of the richest men and they are all miserable lol. I am not rich or chase money. I am just happy with what I have.

Look a lot of these people found themselves in this situation due to a couple of unfortunate circumstances:
      1. Almost without fail the victim has lost someone close to them very recently and is in a vulnerable situation.
      2. They’re not coping very well with their grief.
      3. They feel lonely. Deep down a couple of them know that this isn’t real, but the addiction is real.
      4. Not being very tech savvy. Some of these people aren’t the sharpest, but I do believe that a lot of the victims aren’t dumb. But it’s easy being tricked when you’re vulnerable.
      5. Many are religious. These scammers usually play out the god-card. And a lot of believers tend to be more easily persuaded if you push the right buttons. Which for them are the ones about faith, helping others, not being greedy.
      6. And then it’s usually sunk cost fallacy. I’ve already sent you 100k, so what’s the difference if I send you 5k more? Also people feel dumb knowing that they have been fooled, and that’s an uncomfortable feeling that a lot of try to avoid at all costs.
I never got this deep, but after my bf committed suicide I became super vulnerable. I didn’t lose any money, but I was used by people in my surroundings who identified me as an easy target. My classmates made me do so much work for them as well as arrange prom/graduation etc - under the guise that they really appreciated me and that I was a good friend. Did any of them care for me? No. I was constantly left out, being used and my efforts (I did my darnedest so that people would like me) were NEVER appropriated.
People have asked me how I could fall for something so obvious, but at that time my brain worked a little differently due to the huge traumatic life change.

Comments like these always get me. Wives work too! Wives have financial assets of their own that they bring into the marriage, or often have separate assets from their husbands. Also, money earned during a marriage is the money of both spouses. Even if she never worked outside the home, raising five kids for several decades is worth tens of thousands of dollars (depending on where you live, even hundreds of thousands of dollars) in childcare they did not have to pay for because of her. I get what where you’re coming from, but you never see these kinds of comments when it’s a widower on the show.

20yrs ago I was on the dating sites. I'd never heard of scammers at that time, but when one of them would say they loved me shortly after a few chats, I told them there was no way if they didn't even know me, a I'd block them. I was looking for husband material, not someone talking crazy to me. Of course now I believe they were most likely scammers.

My husband was an actual oil rig worker for ten years. Oil rig workers live a very luxurious life while on the rig. Yes, they work very hard, but they also have everything they need for relaxation, including internet access (including access via online to banking services), all the food they can eat, game rooms, exercise rooms, etc. Anybody who is underperforming or causing problems on the rig, regardless of status, is on the next helicopter out at company expense. Those workers are very knowledgeable and well trained. It's sad that so many Americans have little knowledge of world affairs or geography. Everyone might need some help once in a while, but a guy who is a real man, and he wants to impress you, just won't be asking you for money like this. Yes I don't understand that.
My dumb neighbor (and she IS dumb) would talk about her "3 boyfriend's".
For 2 years straight we'd tell her he was scamming her and I said, "go outside + meet a real man not somebody in Nigeria ".
And she'd say, "you all will see when he comes here for Thanksgiving".Of course nobody showed up yet she'd be saying the exact same thing at Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day it just went on + on.
She divorced her husband for this fake 23 year old soldier. She got evicted for non payment of rent + is now sleeping on her friend's sofa.
I don't mean to sound cruel but she shoulda asked herself: Why would a 23 year old want me?
I'm 67, 430 pounds, not a tooth in my head. What's the number of the nearest counseling center?

Just this morning I got a friend request from someone who left some really bad Google translate comments under some of my posts on FB, the same comment several times. They were really flattering and the typical "I saw your picture and you're so beautiful, I want to get to know you", and his profile claimed that he's a pediatric surgeon at the United Nations, lmao. I don't think that's even a thing. So, I reverse image searched his photo, and lo and behold, photo was stolen. Blocked and reported him. He had an obviously fake name too, like James Benjamin (always a first name for last name, that's a dead giveaway), and no friends in common. Blockety block block block!
