Why Venus and Mercury have no Moons?

  • Mercury and Venus have no moons because of their close proximity to the Sun. Any moon orbiting around them is likely be swallowed by the mammoth gravitational pull of the mighty Sun.
    All planets except for Mercury and Venus have moons. In fact, Earth is the only planet to have just one moon; remaining planets from Mars onward have multiple moons, with Saturn having as much as 82 moons! So when most of the planets are inundated moons, why do Venus and Mercury have no moons?
    The moonlessness of Venus and Mercury is mostly attributed to their proximity to the sun. Being so close to the sun means that they’re not only exposed to a lot of hostile solar radiation, but also experience the intense gravitational pull of the massive star nearby. For Mercury, the planet is simply too close to the Sun and also too small to have any sustainable gravitational influence to secure a moon in orbit. As for Venus, its slow retrograde rotation makes it challenging for any moon to stay in its orbit.

    Great video! One thing though, even if any object, say, our moon, is formed from accretion then why are there different sections like the core, mantle, crust of moon etc.??
    And, what determines the size of hill sphere? Thanks! And if the case of Mars' Moons is because they are asteroids, so, when meteors pass through the Earth, then why doesn't it make it a moon??

    • @sajinajay6617
      @sajinajay6617 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Core, mantle and crust of the moon are formed because of gravity just like every other planets.

    • @TheBlueCreeper-
      @TheBlueCreeper- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The crust, mantle, and core are formed naturally by the gravitational pull the object exerts on itself. If the object is big enough, it's internal pressure exerted by it's own gravity will cause its interior to be like this. Pressure eventually melts materials (mantle) and then superheat them and in some cases, even turning them into solids again (core). The Crust is product of the materials contact with the colder temperatures of outer space, and the atmosphere is the gases the object manages to attract (which if its too small, the gravity won't be enough to attract gas.)

    • @TheBlueCreeper-
      @TheBlueCreeper- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And the hillsphere is determined by the force of gravity of an object, plus it's distance from another gravitational force.

      But despite being smaller than mercury (and the moon) it is so far away from the Sun that it has better chances at getting moons which in its case theyre all captured Kuiper belt objects. (Fun fact: if you didn't know Pluto and Charon are actually a binary dwarf-planet system. Kinda like binary stars. Pluto and Charon orbit each other; and with their combined gravity, they exert a stronger gravitational pull on their moons. That's why they have four) (another fun fact: Neptune's moon Triton is a captured dwarf planet. In fact, Triton would be the largest dwarf planet if it wasn't for the fact that it orbits Neptune.)

    I agree that mercury is too close to the sun causing it to have no moon but the point that mercury is "too small" to have a moon dazzles me. Pluto for example is a drawf planet. it is far away from the sun without a doubt but it has a moon 1/4 its size. it also has a bigger hill sphere which does make sense but the size of an object does not affect if it has a moon or not.

    Venus can have a moon and keep it easily since the video already showed that its hill sphere was close to earth's in size the problem retrograde rotation or basicaly if the planet is rotating slower then the moon's orbital period it will stael that moon's kinetic energy and make the planet spin faster and venus is not just slow it rotates backwards so even if it had a moon its impossible for it to stay in orbit and no it wouldn't fly off into sun's orbit if it did we would find it anyway it would fall straight down into venus form a ring which will rain on the planet so its NOT the sun thats making venus moonless its its rotation but for mercury sun plays a bigger role in this and also rotation is very slow again so no moon

      Uranus’s tilt is about 98 degrees on its axis, if we could see Uranus orbit around the sun it would look like a ball rolling on its side
      Like the other gas giant planets Uranus had the gravitational force to grab up the remaining debris hence why they have so many moons compare to Earth and Mars
