    Thank you Kevin. I had not done more than the first third since March when the Taoist Tai Chi in Portland, Oregon close for the duration. When I “discovered” your video, it enabled me to remember nearly all of the set, especially listening to your gentle narration. You are truly serving the intent and memory of Mr. Moy.

    Hi Kevin, I started Taoist Tai Chi a month ago here in Richmond, BC. Though the instructor gently suggested that we can not learn from a video, I am finding your tutorials and these review videos are a huge help to me. I can see the moves from so many angles and your verbal cues are terrific as I practice along with you. I think these videos are a tremendous resource and I thank you and Shelley for all the time and effort you offer in order for us to learn this helpful art.

      Hi Erin,
      Congrats on starting your Tai Chi Journey!
      I would have to admit that back when I first started instructing, I would have said pretty much the same. Over the years however, after having so many people ask if there was some sort of resource or tools to help them practice, and seeing how many people are improving and learning from our videos, I would now have to say I was wrong.
      You can learn from a video but ideally, in addition to learning from an instructor and/or attending regular classes. I have found that not everybody has the opportunity of those added benefits and yet are still able to learn and further their Tai Chi because of our videos. We do these videos to help both students and instructors and this is my way of honouring Mr. Moy's request to help others and to make the learning of his Tai Chi available to everyone. Practice diligently!
      Cheers

    Thank you so much for your videos. I especially like the commentary on the "behind the scenes" video. You certainly help Mr Moy's wish to make tai chi available to all. Like some other beginners I have problems with sequence. This helps enormously and helps with transitioning from one move to the next. Again, Thank You!

      Hi Deb
      Very welcome and glad the video has helped! I sure hope classes start up again for people as there have been a lot of folks falling off the Tai Chi wagon so to speak. Either way we will still keep doing our Livestream and Zoom classes for anyone that just wants to progress and improve. Most students are planning to continue with the livestream even when they go back to regular classes as they have moved forward far better than they would have otherwise.

    Kevin, thanks for the video. You're doing a great public service by giving these tutorials for free. Although I knew the set after 15 years of practice here in Calgary, I had forgotten almost the entire set due to a 2-year pause caused by the covid restrictions, even having forgotten that we bow in the beginning. I started watching you doing the entire set almost daily and frequently did it with you. It's great to hear the cues that you give while I practice, and sometimes I turn off the sound to force me to do it by myself. I go to a community centre, where we also do foundation exercises and the Taoist Tai Chi set, and some members know of your video. By the way, we're all seniors and I plan to tell more members in our practice class of what you present on TH-cam. Please keep up your efforts to preserve the gifts of Taoist Tai Chi that Master Moy gave us.

    Thank you for the video! It helps me a great deal in my quest to practice again.
    Personally, I would find it easier to follow if you only call out the name of the move. Should you like to flesh out what the move is like, follow it after the calling out of the name.
    When I practice the set, I can not watch what you do! I have to stop the set to see what you do, if I am not sure. (I am sure there will be a lot more of that moments later, my mission at the moment is to remember 108 moves). The explanation you give making more difficult (to me) to find what the next move will be.

      Hi Joe
      Glad the videos are helping and thanks for the suggestion! Sometimes it’s hard to know what the best format for some of these videos would be given that everybody is a little different in how they learn, etc. We will see what we can come up with in the New Year. All the same, the best way I know to learn and remember the set is lots and lots of practice, but for sure the videos are helping people all over the world. Happy Holidays!

    Hi Kevin. Thank you very much for sharing these videos. The 108 moves video has really helped me learn the moves between my weekly classes in the last four months. Now I can (mostly) remember the moves, I will move onto the Classroom Classics to fine tune the individual moves.
    Currently I go to a beginner class at my gym (in West London, UK,) which is less than ideal, as the teacher just repeats the moves for the regular new joiners. Can you suggest resources to help me find a teacher that will progress my Tai Chi?

      Hi 1992,
      You are very welcome. I know it can be tough as a beginner and that's one of the reasons for doing our videos as a resource. I usually tell new beginners to give themselves at least a year before they start to critique themselves because it takes about that long ( on average) to get comfortable with the sequence and remembering the moves. The more you practice, the easier it gets!
      Cheers

    It might be two years since my last comment, but rest assure, I've been doing this with you here or on a tape recording that I have in my cell phone. Love it! I have serious nonoperable back issues and have to live with meds and pain. Master Moy via your video has been great for the right shoulder blade and lower back. Wish the session would eliminate the stiffness, but it ain't so. However it is great to enjoy a few hours with no pain/tightness. Appreciate Ya Shi Fu.

    Hi Kevin, I have been practicing Taoist Tai Chi for just over 2 years now and still need the guidance of the people around me. Therefore this video is very helpful in these unusual times.
    I practiced Tai Chi China in London many years ago under a Master and he had a disciple who would continue his teaching. Therefor I asked who was now the keeper of the form after the passing of Mr Moy. From what I have been told, Mr Moy didn’t train any particular individual to take the reigns. However, practice exercises and the form are continuously being changed. The instructor has no idea as to the purpose of the change - just follow the instructions.
    The form is intended as a moving meditation which requires muscle memory. The continuous changes make this impossible. So I have some questions you may be able to help me with.
    - who is making the changes?
    - what is the purpose of the changes?
    - is there an aim in mind. In other words, will the changes just continue?
    Once again, thank you for the video.

    • @TheAwarenessWebsite
      @TheAwarenessWebsite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith,
      You are very welcome and glad you enjoy the video.
      Some difficult questions to answer. Whomever is making the decisions within the Society today do not seem to want to tell the membership about the reasons for the changes as many instructors ask about it and no one seems to have an answer. Personally i never saw Mr. Moy or any of his closest students do any of the things that have been changed and Mr. Moy said himself that he was not appointing any one individual to be the new "master". Changes and variations are good for specific reasons as in the case of an individual's requirements and understanding those requirements and being able to perceive and understand an individual's need are very important especially for an instructor. Mr. Moy would have his translators and certain people explain things from time to time to help people understand what they are doing as well as direct intervention on occasion. Blind repetition without understanding only goes so far in terms of one's development.
      Keep practicing and keep exploring. Mr. Moy's original teachings were very effective at helping people improve their health and wellbeing so don't get discouraged. Keep asking questions.
      Cheers

    Hi Kevin, Thank you very much for sharing this video. I think your video is the best one in all of teaching Taichi videos. Everything is perfect except for one thing I noticed was, it’s not easy to figure out which leg you are moving. Left or right? I know we can listen to your direction but while practicing it's easier for us to copy with our eyes as well, along with our ears. So I wish you could make a new video which has a white color on your left or right leg. So when you perform we can follow and learn your wonderful technique perfectly. Thanks again and hoping we could practice with your new video soon. Merry Christmas and stay safe. Sincerely

    Thank you so much for this video. It is the most helpful taoist taichi series of 108 movements I have found. I used to practice taoist tai-chi 3 years ago. With the coronovirus crisis, we are now locked-up in Spain. I thought it´d be great to go back to this practice while at home. All the best.

    Thank you so much for this. I have only been going to classes for a little over a month and while I can follow my instructor, the moves are being taught in sets. Putting the sets together in the right order is still challenging. You are so easy to follow that I am learning the transitions easily. I am doing the ones I know plus the next one, rewinding and doing it again until I have memorized it, and then go to the next move, rewind and so on. It has made a major difference for me. Thank you again.

    Thank you Kevin for taking the trouble to reply. I agree with you...none of the teachers in the classes I go to have any commemt or knowledge about better benefits, except to say that Tai Chi is an ever moving art, times change and the “world counsel” (?) get together every year to review and revise the set. I do it like they do now so that I can participate in the classes I go to and not stand out or be open to correction. All the best and I shall keep watching your very excellent video.

      Hi Linella,
      Sorry I missed this comment. All I can say is glad that you are going to class and practicing. Understanding the Tai Chi is a long process and learning isn't always easy. I would suggest trying to stay open to correction because someone might have an objective viewpoint that could help as long as they can explain what they are seeing and what you need to work on. Also if they can clearly demonstrate what they want you to do. Mr. Moy used to say that first you need to learn it, then you need to be able to demonstrate it. As an instructor you need to be able to help someone else do it but more importantly, communicate what they are doing to promote a better understanding of what the student is working on.

    Hello Si Fu, a couple of weeks ago, I received an email on Tai Chi Classes in Knoxville, TN. I was a member a few years and was trained in the Daoist method of Master Moy Lin Shin. I attended a Friday class and all went well. The instructor recommended I attend the Monday session where the society officers were the instructors. I attended and when they asked how I was doing (they remembered me), I told them that I was still practicing the 108 moves (I didn't mention that I was staying adept with your classes) and that I had learned the 24 form and was studying the Paul Lam 73 Form. When I said that, it got so quiet, that it sounded like I used the F word in a church. We did the set and afterwards one of the officers came up and recommended that I attend another Tai Chi class at another location other than their own. I felt that their attitude was unprofessional and I wonder what type of impact that their actions would have on any or all individuals who are seeking to learn Tai Chi within the Knoxville or its outlying area. I can handle an insult, but how about the next individual? It sets a bad example for the Society.

It's good to have a review to follow to correct any bad habits that have developed. I am very disappointed with the Daoist Tai Chi society as they have taken our subscriptions for the last 9 months and offered no support at all. I will now cancel my direct debit for the coming year. Sadly I would have expected better from a society which professes good moral ethics. Anyway, thank you so much.

    Please consider commenting on your body structure at 13:35, and throughout the form.
    Specifically, your back is angled and your arms(in this case) are extended at such a distance, I almost feel you have off centered.
    This is an observation, from which I would like to learn.
    I know that internal structure is an important, some would say most important, focus of the form.
    Am I too wordy? Angling the back reminds me of a stretched out shaolin form like Crane. After decades, I have a lot to learn. Still trying to figure out how to stay within my sacrum, with head up, chin slightly in, weight sinking.
    Thanks.

    • @kevinwerre2700
      @kevinwerre2700 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Houseson,
      You are correct from a traditional viewpoint, but there are many ways to approach the form. Mr. Moy had a unique background which led him to develop a different perspective on how work with the foundations and form. His Taoist understanding of the physiology and energetic aspects of the body is indicated in how we work on opening up the joints and tendons which shows in the stretching and extending of the limbs much like a Dao Yin practice.

    If truth be spoken, Kevin is performing his tai chi at a decent pace. If no one has mentioned it, Tai Chi should be performed at a slower pace that enables both relaxed form, and that enables the performers to feel the chi, and move it through their bodies. Too fast and you merely have good exercise. The feeling of magnetism in your hands, and bodies is what you are after. Few people can feel those things while moving faster. If anyone says the group needs to move faster they are ignoring one of the main rules of tai chi. Besides not everyone in a group can get those benefits moving faster but most people will benefit much more with slower practice.

    • @TheAwarenessWebsite
      @TheAwarenessWebsite  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Len,
      I agree! The awareness of the movement through the body is key and moving slower helps facilitate that. Practicing at different tempos can be very beneficial to understanding and developing timing while fine tuning the ability to stay focused on the circulation regardless of what you are doing. This enables you to practice your Tai Chi while engaged in any activity.
      Cheers

    • @TheAwarenessWebsite
      @TheAwarenessWebsite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith,
      I recommend Mr. Moy's videos all the time. He did those videos for the same reason as this video, to simply show the sequence and provide a resource to help people see the basic form. There are so many subtleties in his movements that it's hard to see what is actually going on with his body without many years of experience. There is so much more than what even his videos show but it's definitely a good benchmark.

    I have a question. I am trying to do move 4 whips to 1 side. I have duck feet so it is impossible to do pigeon toe. What can I do?

    • @kevinwerre2700
      @kevinwerre2700 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terry,
      Not sure what you mean by "duck feet" but I assume that your feet are splayed out (perhaps due to tightness in the lower back and hip joints)and yes, a condition like that can make it difficult to pivot as far as you would normally like to. In a case like this you do the best you can and perhaps do the pivot in two stages. The point of the pigeon toed position is to get the right foot set up at the 45 degree angle to accommodate the TorYu in the second part of the Whip to One Side, so however you need to adjust and set that up should be fine. Of course taking your time and paying attention to balance and coordinating the timing of the body and extremities. Hope this helps!
      Cheers

      Hi Jocelyne,
      So glad to hear the videos are helping and congrats on starting your Tai Chi journey! It can be a challenge when you just get started but hang in there and don't judge or criticize yourself for at least the first year. Practice at home and as often as possible and you will be surprised how quickly and easily you can remember the moves. But remembering the moves is not so important as understanding how the foundation exercises work the body. All the movements are based on the foundations and remembering the sequence comes with time and practice.

I understand that the FLK has been making changes to a number of moves in the set but so far I have not been able to find out exactly what the purpose or benefit of these changes are. It seems anybody that I have talked to with the FLK or TTCS can't really explain the changes nor can they really demonstrate the moves/changes clearly.
      Personally, I never saw Mr. Moy nor any of his closest students do any of these moves in the manner now being presented ( and I have seen a lot of unique demonstrations and variations of moves) so again, not sure of the reasons. I am sharing what has been taught to me and what I have learned over the years and don't plan on changing anything unless it can be demonstrated that there is reasonable benefit to be gained. Mr. Moy laid it all out for us right from the beginning and stated that he taught different things to different people and that it was up to us to get together to share and learn from each other and to continue to make the Tai Chi available to everyone, so that's what I am doing. If there is something I am missing or something else Mr. Moy taught and someone is willing to share and explain the benefits, I am all ears.
      Practice lots and pay attention to the foundations as they are the key. The moves just give you something to apply the foundations to. Keep it simple.
      Cheers

    I live in New Zealand. I practiced Taoist tai chi in Ontario for 2 years. Since there is no Taoist in my part of NZ I use your videos and really appreciate them.

      Hi Lucida,
      Sorry for the delay in responding. Been pretty busy and got behind on emails. Very happy to hear the videos are helping. You are a wonderful example of why we do the videos and hope you can find someone in NZ to practice with at some point.
      Cheers

    Just relocated from Austin, TX to Tallahasse, FL. I was at the Austin/Cedar Park Center for over a year, and this video is a great refresher. Look forward to joining in at the Tallahassee Center

    Hi Kevin, Thank you very much for this video. I practice every day but at different times. Please let me know what time of the day is the best for this practice? Especially in the wintertime, with No sunshine in the early morning, cold weather, pandemic; we have to practice indoors. Thanks for your advice. Best wishes to you and your family. Cheers

      Hi Hanh,
      When I asked Mr. Moy that same question, he replied " Whenever you feel like it. But be diligent with the practice". If you make it a part of your everyday life activities, there will never be a moment that you are not practicing!
      Cheers
      Kevin

    Too much bending at the waist. Lack of squaring to the front and to the side.
