This is a situation where we can imagine James and Lars saying to Jason:
"Dude, we're tired of mixing this song, could you wrap it up, please? All yours. Feel free to adjust volumes, EQ, compress it any way you like it."
Metallica singer James Hetfield had a difficult upbringing in small-town California. His truck driver father walked out on the family whilst his Christian Scientist mother's beliefs led to her dying young from cancer after refusing treatment. In this song, Hetfield's anger at his family comes out. He told Rolling Stone magazine that there is "a lot of blame in that song." He added that he blamed his family for "Insulating and alienating, which happened a lot with our religion [Christian Science]. That song was about being in a cocoon, and now that I'm out on my own, oh, my God, the world is shocking me. I don't know how to deal with this stuff. I don't know how to deal with grief, poverty, confrontation. How to live on my own, after father leaving, mother dying."

Yeah, awesome the way it cuts into the guitar register and just doubles the guitar or the bass drum, so that you cant hear the guitar. That shit worked in Flotsam and Jetsam, because the guitars were in a high register and there was clear separation. The person at fault for Jason's bass parts being mixed down, is Jason for sucking at his job.
@@springbloom5940 Lars was the one who wanted it turned down to "Barely audible" levels after the mixer had mixed it, so they turned the bass down because lars wanted his drums to a have that specific sound.

Yes... because Newsted's crap bass tracks were interfering with everything else. They suck. You can hear it in the 'rough mixes' before they mixed it out. You can hear it on the remastered album, where even at their downmixed level, its still just WUBWUBWUBWUB. Newsted sucks, hes not a good bass player and hes every bit the little bitch that Ulrich is.
This version is incredible! Damn Lars and James for turning down the bass on the original track. This is the only version I'm playing, no turning back. Too bad this is censored.
This is not Jason playing, the bass was played and added to the mix. Now the guitars are barely audible on this track.

Lamont Arnold if Cliff was still alive and for some reason had to leave Metallica and saw Jason come into the band he would have the biggest smile on his face seeing how Jason’s energy was the same as his. No doubt cliff would be proud. Jason was a hell of a bassist and had great vocals to go along with it.
@NuBz Well said, man. If James and Lars really disliked Jason that much, then they would have fired him at any time they'd like. The fact at how devastated they were when Jason left in 2001 says a lot about this too.
And like djreyesd said above you said, Cliff was a very respectful guy. He showed so much respect for his predecessor Ron McGovney after he left Metallica in 1982, so who's to say Cliff wouldn't show the same for his successor? Cliff's parents even came down and gave Jason their blessing, which should mean a lot to them.
Jason also shows a lot of respect towards Cliff, as well as his successor Rob Trujillo and vice versa. Every bassist Metallica has had have been well levelheaded.
Am I the only be thinking what would this be like with dual bass Jason and Cliff? And Lars not turning down the bass?
@@Kruegernator123 they didnt dislike jason, it was said by them many times, thye just hated that he was a fan instead of member and I get it. Imagine being a guy thats obssesed with a band and he got in. He behaved like a woman that did everything to not lose her man with tons of money (not saying it was about money), its about he was too affraid to say his words because he was affraid to be replaced by someone else, so he stood quiet and they fucking hated that he didnt have his own opinion and he agreed to everything, thats why. They reduced the bass sound for fun to see his reaction and trigger him and he didnt react, like he was that affraid that he didnt even say a shit his thing was muted, so they muted it even more, and then it stood that way.
I've never paid attention, but apparently Jason deserves more credit than he has received.

Another great re-mix, Alex. I think this version of "Dyer's Eve" sounds much heavier than the original mix. Jason Newsted is a fantastic musician and his work deserves to be audible. Keep up the good work!

Robert can't play that song. He's a great bass player, but at this speed he cannot put an aggressive vibe in it, because he has to focus at playing all the notes. And his bass doesn't sound that well for that song. I always preferred Jason's bass guitars.

The bass is absurdly forward, but it actually sounds kinda cool that way.

JASON NEWSTED got a raw deal He truly is a great bassist. He was a big deal in Flotsam and Jestson....he wrote a lot of their music. Lars and James really cornholed him. This is an Awesome Version of the song. keep up the good work

I never understood why the hell the bass was totally absent on this album. Fu**, it would have been such a great album. Oh sure, it wasn't Cliff but hey, Jason wasn't bad. So, my last word here would be " And Justice for all, except Jason "

Jason is such an amazing bassist and it’s such a shame he was rendered inaudible in the original released audio for the album.
Such an underrated bass player Jason Newstead is and so important to Metallica just a pity it took him to leave the band for them to realise this.

The verses where the guitars just play sustained power chords sound so much better with that driving bassline underneath; it really adds another dimension to the song. There are other parts of the song where the bass should be audible but blend with the rhythm guitar a bit more on a more truly balanced mix; but even on such a mix, the bass should be cranked during that section. Great to get to clearly every note played and know what's going on.

It's from a video game and it was censored there.
Like the guy below me said, it's an isolated track from Guitar Hero: Metallica. They censored many swear words in order to comply with the ESRB ratings.

I think this is the only song on Justice that I like as the original. Maybe this versions bass is just a tad too high
well bass is louder than everything which isnt howd youd mix a track normally, the mix of master of puppets would be better although be different as Newsteads bass sound is more agressive than Burtons.
I have a lower bass version I know I’m late but my files are open source so you can edit them with audacious and change the DB of the basstrack
this mix is very close to the sound of Garage Days Re-revisited. I wish that AJFA was mixed the same way. Great mix!

you know what, this is great and all. of course the intention was to let us hear what the bass parts were really like and what the music could have sounded if the bass was given justice. and this absolutely succeeds in that end! so thank you for giving us all this. we finally get to see for ourselves how great the bass work was in some of metallica's songs that happened to have the bass mixed too low for its own good. however, having said all that, i think, absurd as this may sound, i think that i can see why they turned the bass all the way down. it is to highlight the guitars and to achieve that very, very distinctive drum sound. i think, of all their albums, justice had the best, most brutal guitar and drum sound. of course the black album had a better sound production overall, but just for the sheer brutality and starkness of the sound, nothing tops justice. then again, having said all that, they could have AT LEAST made the bass still sound audible. the bass being TOTALLY absent was just utter injustice, and we know this much too well now that we've heard how great the bass work was after all...

I actually don't like the busy bass line being played.. and I don't know if it is because I don't like it or think it is not appropriate for what the guitars are doing musically... or if I'm just not used to it... Also... I think in this mix, I think the bass is too loud, and all for the same reasons... lol! Not trying to pull a Lars!

The way they turned down the bass was like they were trying to sound less heavy. Everything they’ve done since this album is terrible. The way James attempts to sing and all YEAHs and OOHs just make me cringe.

Jason ha fatto un lavoro impressionante su questo album. Tenere anche solo i riff con gli accenti perfetti deve essere stata una fatica incredidibile. Mi sarebbe piaciuto molto sentire come Cliff avrebbe interpretato queste canzoni, non seguendo le chitarre sicuramente.
