- In this Govee bulb review I compare the LED bulbs vs the Philips Hue, the original rgb bulbs that got me excited about smart lighting. The difference in price alone makes the Govee worth considering, but are they actually any good?

I know, it's just nice to have right? I don't use the RGB all the time, but it's too cool when I do. It just sets the mood for movies or whatever we're doing.

I just installed two of these lights. I like them so far, but still working on confirming all of the features for comparison to my existing Hue bulbs/app. For instance, with Hue, I can set the lights so they randomly go on and off when I'm on vacation so it looks like I'm home. I can also sign in when I'm away from my wifi and out of Bluetooth range to turn them on and off. On the other hand, these bulbs were unbelievably easy to set up. I just screwed them in and found them on the app. Didn't have to go through a whole separate ordeal to get them connected to Alexa. Phillips/Alexa may have updated that by now, but it used to be such a pain. I have high hopes for these. Thanks for reviewing.
Glad you found the video! I still use them everyday. The ONLY negative I would say is that they don't go as dim as the Hue. But I don't really need them to go dim so I don't really care. And I can't talk about that feature you mentioned (scheduling) since I don't use it. But I know the Govee app is pretty comprehensive.

You totally earned my like, comment & sub! I just got my lights today. You are correct in all you say. It's a month after you posted this, do you have any more in depth reviews on the features & how to use them? Of all the videos I've searched nobody has talked about how you can scan an image to use it's pallet in the bulbs, for grouping, etc. I found a few things on my own but I know it's a lot more that can be done. Again great & straight forward review!!

To be honest, I wish I could say I've had the time to tinker and had advice for you. The software has a lot to chew on and I haven't really gotten in there. Heck I could probably do a video just on the Govee App and features alone like you mentioned.
I am still happy with the bulb and should probably take the time to truly customize using them. I also got the Triangle panels and light tubes which I have still yet to stick on the wall :S

I see so many other brands or amazon that are cheaper than Govee. Which do you recommend? Still Govee? Is it better in terms of colors? App? Brightness? Diffusion? Etv
I’ve used Govee lights for a long time and find them to be consistently good and at an acceptable price. I just wish they offered more bulb sizes.

Hi there... I have many different smart bulb, from Philips Hu, to Yeelight, to other less know brand... Everyone have it's pro and cons... Some don't give nice colors, some have low light exc...
One feature that is really important for me is the ability to give nice strong light when needed and be able to dimmer like to barely zero lumens when I have to sleep...
So, are this bulbs good at offering this range of brightness? I really hope to find a nice bulbs, affordable, to replace all my smart bulb (5 at the moment) with same brand ones...

That is a good question... unfortunately the Govee bulbs do not go as dim as the Philips Hue. Not really close to be honest. I had to go check just now, and the 1% dimness on the Govee was like 35% of the Philips Hue. Now with that test was with reading white. When I change the Govee bulbs to different color they got a lot more dim (purple... blue... etc).
I didn't try enough different brands to say which one is THE best value... I would have liked to try the Ikea ones as well (which are Zigbee and have a hub) as they are quite popular. Overall for how we use the Govee bulbs they are just incredible value and I still recommend them. But if dimness is your requirement that's not where they shine lol.
Price for 1 is crazy in America. $19.99. Here in the UK, at the time of writing this, 1 Govee bulb costs £7.99
Yeah something is going on with the Govee availability in the US, not sure what... but the prices are very affordable here in Canada. I'm still happy with them.

Can I make replace my living room lights on the ceiling with these bulbs and turn them off automatically when I set a command like "Movie Night" from google or alexa?
Heck yeah!! You can use voice commands to set particular brightness (I use this all the time) as well as change colors, or like you said, said certain scenes. You can't go wrong especially for the price. The only slight negative is that they don't lower the brightness as much as the Philips Hue... for example the lowest setting on the Govee is about 25% on the Hue. I would say if you set the mood with colors, especially blues / purples it is definitely dark enough. I use them for movie nights in the background lamps and they are great. Just thought I'd mention it that.

Absolutely! The app is pretty insane... it's very sophisticated and with time, you could do whatever you want with these lights. You just might need to spend a little time getting familiar with the app.
I know none of these youtube reviews cover this but what is it like to conenct and control colors without a wifi router? (bluetooth), can you adjust the colors? can you adjust multible bulbs?
That's a good question and I'm not sure. However, you COULD use your phone to create a wireless hot spot if you want to change the color. That should work.
@@TheSAHDLife if you were to do that you would need a second phone. your own phone to choose the wifi network for the bulb wouldnt show up because your own phone is the hotspot. Cant connect to your own phones hotspot (even though this would be a good usecase for being able to do so)
I have two questions. One, since it's on bluetooth, would I be able to connect it while my bluetooth headphones are on? Second, can I get the lightbulb to react to music through my headphones or would I have to play it out loud. Thanks!
I use the wi-fi settings so I'm not sure about the first question. They might be able to answer that in the Amazon FAQ or perhaps on their website. Also I think when you put it in the sound mode it might use the mic in your phone to make the lightbulbs dance. So no, it wouldn't work.

Those are just some cheap LED strips I found on Amazon. I don't remember the brand... I had bought 2 sets and one of them flickered... this one didn't. Honestly if I were to buy them again I would probably just get the Govee led light strips.
Where can I find that spherical table lamp that accepts these bulbs?
I'm not exactly sure which lamp you are talking about but they are a very standard build so most lamps should work. The ones I had were from Ikea!
How long do they last in comparison to regular or energy efficient bulbs? How bright do they get in comparison to 45w, 60w, 75w, 100w bulbs? These are the questions I would like to know if I'm going to spend $10 on one bulb. Right?!
These are great questions! My brain doesn't work that way... Maybe someone needs to create a video answering these types of technical questions!!? 😉

they last about 6 years according to Govee. 40W = 450 lumens. 60W = 800 lumens. 75W = 1100 lumens. Govee's older model bulbs are about 800 Lumens, and the newer ones are 1000 lumen. if that helps.
Why is the energy rating an F on these as thought LEDs where power efficient?
That is a good question and I really don't know. I wonder if needing a constant wifi connection requires it to use more power?
I have the h6006 on my garage sconces. They are really cool lights, but I wish they made candelabra bulbs so I can put them in my salt lamps.

Do you think one of these could light up a room?
Yeah I don't see why not! I mean, one small bulb might not be the best for lighting up a room on it's own but, it'd do the trick. Just don't expect it to be insanely bright or brighter than any other bulb. But at least you'll be able to RGB control it with the app which is always fun!
Do they make chandelabra bulbs?
Good question. I don't think so :( What do you use candelabra bulbs for... small lamps? I don't really have ANY in our house. Just curious :)

I had never heard of ZigBee until you just mentioned it and I can see the benefits for sure. Do you have a zigbee setup in your home? And have you found any bulbs for it?
@@TheSAHDLife I think the main other contender against Philips in the ZigBee space are the IKEA TRÅDFRI bulbs.
WiFi is fine for a handful of devices but once you fall down the smart home rabbit hole, having too many starts to have a negative impact on your WiFi network for other regular WiFi devices. Since WiFi also comparatively uses more power, it's not suitable for battery operated sensors so, for example, in my case it makes sense to create a ZigBee mesh around the house with ZigBee lights and wall switches and then have the low power motion, temperature, door sensors all hang off the closest routing device in the mesh. Allows me to have devices outside the house too where there is poor WiFi reception - they just hop along the ZigBee mesh.
So you are advising people about why they should buy Govee over Philips Hue when the core way Philips Hue functions is via Zigbee? And you heard of it just now when the commenter above you mentioned it?
You are recommending people on what IoT stuff they should and shouldn't buy w/o having heard of Zigbee?

@ativerc hehe. I understand what you are saying but no. Not paid to make this video. Not trying to dive deep into IoT things as I think it might overwhelm most people. I have Phillips Hue and am familiar with the ZigBee concept I just didn't know the name. Honestly I'm just trying to help average people have cool lighting. It doesn't go deeper than that. Whenever people visit they love the vibe at our house and with these lights I think the barrier for entry being the price is finally low enough non tech people might consider them. Our space is bigger than most people's homes and we have a lot of smart devices and everything works great. I haven't felt the need to have all my devices on a seperate network but I do understand the benefits like the other commenter pointed out.
Do you think people who know nothing about IoT should learn about and buy ZigBee lights over govee? And if so, which bulbs?
Thanks for the conversation. I learn a lot this way and have no problems admitting that I'm wrong if I am. It sounds like a ZigBee setup is ideal, especially in a large space with lots of devices but I still think these Govee bulbs are awesome for most people and creators (since they don't flicker like the Hue) unless you can explain to me why they aren't.

Like you mentioned this video speaks more to the people who might not have or want the time to figure out and set up an optimized setup like this and just want a handful of RGB bulbs that work easily right out of the gate.
My only main concern would be having too many wifi devices for health reasons but from my research it doesn't seem like it affects us in any negative way. Lol.
So to summarize what I've learned... IoT or to anyone reading this, a ZigBee mesh network keeps your wifi structure more organized, uses less energy, is more secure since maybe cheaper devices are more vulnerable, is more expensive to set up but offers a wider range. Is that correct?
Whereas wifi bulbs like Govee are easy to use, cheap, don't flicker (maybe the Ikea ones don't), have less range (although good enough for smaller spaces), and clutter up the wifi network which again is probably fine for most people without lots of smart devices?
The fact that the bulbs are not dimmable from the switch was a bit of a deal breaker for me (for now). I like when I say "Alexa, turn on/off downstairs lights" they all turn on smoothly together (dim up) and turn off (dim down) at the same time. So, I'm torn between that and the fun of color. I do achieve my color ambience with Govee lamps, TV lights, etc. 🙂
They do dim with voice commands... they just don't work with a dimmable switch. Perhaps that's what you meant I just want to be clear. If I say 'Google turn on Bedroom lights' then the Govee lights all fade in nicely to which ever color you want. It's great. They don't dim as low as the Hue bulbs but they are good enough for the price. Hope that helps.
@@TheSAHDLife right from the switch, I have smart switches. 👍. There are ways to make routines and work arounds to turn them all on but not uniformly. I like that currently, if I turn group lights they gradually dim up all at the same time. Just wish I had same thing only with color bulbs. I will continue the search.😂

They DO work on a dimmable switch... but let's say, if a normal bulb goes from dull to bright on a 1-10 scale the Govee covers about 4-10 on that level. They don't dim that well. @@alexsykes1337

No, they are not worth it. I bought two and regretted it, I cannot get it to connect to anything. I downloaded the alexa app on my phone which then wanted to charge me 7.99 a month to change colour, no way. Bluetooth, alexa just sits there going "what's this"? Waste of money.
Oh what a bummer! You couldn't get it working with the Govee app? They work fine for me there and in my Google Home app.

Never had any issue with any Govee product to connect as it’s usually seamless.
