Both are due to Brexit; the money that should be available to fund the NHS isn't there because the UK is taking in less tax (in absolute terms, but greater in percentage terms because the UK economy is smaller thanks to Brexit). No we don't. The money comes out of our overseas aid budget. All the money goes to serco and g4s, companies that are subcontracted by the government and make HUGE profits. Small boats are a consequence of ridiculous Brexit policies. It is not possible to return asylum seeking people to a third safe country because no country will accept them. I also need to make clear that it is not illegal to claim asylum, it is not illegal to travel without documents when seeking safety, and it is not a requirement to settle in the first safe country you reach. The government's hyper focus on asylum issues is to detract from their poor policies, governance and cost of living crisis that is a result of Brexit. Other countries show upward projection and signs of recovery since Brexit - the UK is the only one that doesn't.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 14), which states that everyone has the right to seek and enjoy asylum from persecution in other countries. The 1951 UN Refugee Convention (and its 1967 Protocol), which protects refugees from being returned to countries where they risk being persecuted.
The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, also known as the 1951 Refugee Convention or the Geneva Convention of 28 July 1951 is a United Nations multilateral treaty that defines who a refugee is and sets out the rights of individuals who are granted asylum and the responsibilities of nations that grant asylum. The Convention also sets out which people do not qualify as refugees, such as war criminals. The Convention also provides for some visa-free travel for holders of refugee travel documents issued under the convention.
These International laws apply to all UN member states, regardless of whether they participate in the Human Rights Council.
We need to increase staff for processing applications, citizenship hearings, appeals trials, and to catch up and keep up with Visa applications globally.
The backlog of immigrants that built up until Covid limits were lifted then opened floodgates during Biden's administration & should be averaged over the Covid years for greater accuracy, annnd calculations should consider emigration (citizens leaving the U.S. during the same time frame).
Also, borders & entries other than the southern border need emphasizing, as well as States that are soliciting greater populations of legal residents to relocate to their states (Ex: Vermont & other NE States).
It would also help if media stopped claiming that the Bidden administration's policies are to have "open borders", which encourages increasing attempts by migrants to enter the U.S..
Retrograde (backlogged processing limiting entrants) of applicants following legal steps are essentially being "punished" by U.S. understaffing of legal immigration processing.
Given the shortage of Public Defenders (attorneys), Immigration Judges and staff across the board, qualified anti Cyber-attack & drone-attack defense personnel, Etc., I encourage increasing investments in specific areas of education that increase National Security!

This new bill is in direct contravention of the 1951 Convention on Refugee Status, a part of the Geneva Convention which states that if a person meets the requirements for refugee status then they cannot have punitive measures levelled against them for entering the country by irregular means. It will be challenged in international law and the Tories know this, but this is exactly what they want to happen so when the next election comes and the small boats problem is worse than ever they can claim that this would have solved the small boats crossings but that they are being blocked by “lefty lawyers”. When in reality, they caused the problem (small boat crossings were under 300 per year in 2018), did nothing to solve it because anti immigration sentiment is statistically good for them during elections. So they cooked up a law that sounds tough about it but is illegal under international law so they will never have to actually follow through and do anything sensible to solve the problems but can claim that it is someone else’s fault when it fails to have any actual effect.

Maybe but don’t you think we should stop the illegal immigration? It’s not right that people are putting their lives in danger by coming here illegally. Vast majority are clearly not fleeing danger as they’ve come from France and a lot are young men, who ironically could be making their home countries better.

    • @NIKOLAP7

Not really, the Convention requires the people who seek refugee status to present themselves to the authorities WITHOUT DELAY once they arrive.
      Otherwise, they are illegal aliens.
Persons who committed crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity can't be recognized as refugees i.e. the Convention is not applied to such persons.
For most of the refugees from the Middle East, Central Asia, North Africa where totalitarian regimes are flourishing we don't know who they are.

Not if you present yourself to the authorities and apply for asylum, they’ll process your claim and give you temporary accommodation while they do so, then they’ll either accept you as a refugee or deport you back to the UK. Just because you’ve never had cause to apply for asylum doesn’t mean you can’t, France is a signatory of the same convention we are.
