- Sacramento State is getting closer to announcing that it will be moving to the FBS.
President Luke Wood, who met with NCAA President Charlie Baker last week, has stated that an announcement should come in the next month or two. The Sac St ASI has commenced a discussion on approving a $2.5M loan in order to make the transfer form FCS to FBS a reality.
Also, future stadium plans are underway with the first phase set to begin later this year.

Looks like Sac St is committed to joining FBS. Independence would be a good 1st step, and when the PAC, Mtn West, or even the WAC is ready to move, the Hornets would be Ready. Thanks for the post.
The WAC dropped football again. The conference has been renamed the United Athletic Conference. The conference comprised football schools of the A-SUN & the WAC. There's no way the conference can move up to FBS in 10 years as promised.
@dalemcilwain We'll find out who survives when the Cannibalism buffet is over.
@angeloangelojoseph1494 As of right now, the A-Sun has football schools like Central Arkansas, Austin Peay, North Alabama, Eastern Kentucky & West Georgia (in transition) The WAC has Southern Utah, Tarleton State, Albline Christian, & Utah Tech. The WAC lost Stephin F. Austin & UTRVG to the Southland Conference. Previously, the WAC/UAC lost Sam Houston, Jacksonville State, and Kennesaw State to FBS C-USA. Don't be surprised when Tarleton State makes the leap.
@@dalemcilwainYou're right, it doesn't look stable for the UAC. I think that's why SUU and Ut Tech are looking for a Mountain out West to jump into.
Sacramento State slogan should be “Get on the bus, it’s FBS or Bust!
The MWC doesn’t want New Mexico St., since they already have UTEP in the El Paso media market. The El Paso is something like the 60th media market.
But two schools in the Sacramento media market, the 20th largest market in the US, makes sense .
Thanks guys, if they do move it will be interesting.
I believe the last time the NCAA granted a waiver so that his school could be FBS indy, was for Liberty. Obviously the ncaa has lost lawsuits after lawsuits. They don’t want to face another lawsuit. So, I’m sure if Sac St asks for a waiver, they will be granted a waiver. I don’t see any scheduling issues if they are a FBS indy. They will always play Davis, play 2-3 money games vs P5 schools, then schedule current MWC schools.
But, let’s look at the president’s track record. In November 2023 he said he would build a “new arena” for Sac St. that would be built in time for the 2024-25 season. The arena was really adding bleachers to a student rec center court. Something like UC Riverside has. Well, that new arena is still under construction and won’t be ready until next year. But, there were no updates when the volleyball team and the basketball team teams were still playing in their old gym.
Around 2004 Sac St students voted for rec center and arena. The rec center was built. But the president at the time not the current one, came up with a fairytale saying that a fieldhouse building needed to be demolished, and replaced before the arena could be built! Yet, the arena was going to be built in another part of the area. Nowhere near where that fieldhouse used to be. But the fieldhouse was built, and Sac St got to host high level track and field events! Then they said the arena can’t be built because there is no more money! So the students never got the arena that they paid for!
Now the president is asking for a loan for students and will also increase student fees to pay for all the football.
I don’t see SAC STATE in the Pac12. I see them in the MWC with UC Davis in the future. They are a logical travel partner for a conference. They are 20 miles apart.
Sac State could do what Davis is doing right now and go up with them. They need a rival anyways right.
@@wavebreak3679SAC st does not have the same financial backing as Davis. SAC is trying to leverage this possible move to FBS to draw the attention of big donors to commit monies not the other way around.
I suspect the meeting with Baker was to lobby for a waiver to let them go FBS Independent. Honestly, I think that it will be tough for them as an FBS Independent for more than 5 years, but that should give them an opportunity to prove themselves.
They will be in MWC within 3 years
Tell us more about those ACC teams leaving Steve. 😂
Everything states in that episode is still true today. And the ESPN extension occurred, as we said it would.
Anyone that writes this comment, didn’t understand what was being said.
We have a series coming out with @CFBAddiction this week. Give it a listen and maybe you will understand want we are saying a little better.
Other schools are watching to see if Sacramento state gets the go ahead to move up as an Independent. Stony Brook, North Carolina A&T, Eastern Kentucky, Youngstown State, Tarleton State, Chattanooga, Tennessee State, Central Arkansas, Austin Peay, etc would do the exact same thing.
Stony Brook, NC A&T, and TSU?? No offense but they dont deserve to move up at all lmao
@@Lep2005 Stony Brook is already spending close to $50 million on athletics. They already said they are interested in going FBS. TSU and North Carolina A&T would be hard to stop from moving up because they are HBCU, and blocking them from moving up would make the NCAA look like they are prejudice. Those are the only two schools that could have the state and community back them right now out of all the HBCUs out there. TSU is getting a new stadium in the future as well which would be FBS large stadium as well.
Why don't we do away with this silly, outdated pretense that geography has any meaning anymore? If Cal can be in the Atlantic Coast conf., then geographical names are a joke. Conferences should be named for their TV package dollars: The $13.2 million conference, the $17.8 million conf., $125 million over 5 years conf., The $300 million over 10 years conf., etc.
Makes sense.
Conferences still do have geographic tie ins to the major markets which make up the Conferences members though. Cal, for example, has large alumni contingencies in Boston, NY, D.C., and to a lesser extent Raleigh, Atlanta, and now Dallas.
But with that said, since the 90s realignment, regionally based rivalries have played a smaller role and conferences have continued to expand their footpeints that are more aligned to their brands, culture, and alumni base's distribution.
We can ignore it for the major conferences. But for the G6, Geography is still important. They don’t have the same money as the P4 to ignore geography.
Re: first FBS year. Anyone else think they’ll be an independent and fill their schedule with P12/MWC teams?
Re: stadium. I wonder if their stadium design is scalable. Their new stadium is for 25k. What happens in ten years and their brand is better recognized? Will they have to replace their stadium or will they be able to scale it up?
I would imagine most stadiums are built with future add ons taken into consideration.
Maybe not P12/MWC, but Sac State could play a full combined SEC schedule immediately. Nobody jumps at the chance to play smaller programs than the SEC.
@@benodell654 Quick question: does Sacramento have a tourist development tax? Like we have in Orlando? If they do, they should ask for some of the revenue to help out the college, like how Orange County gave us at UCF 90 million to add to the bounce house.
Current stadium seats over 21,000, over 23,000 attended the 2022 Causeway Classic victory over UC Davis.
@ I wish TH-cam had a haha option. Also, none of the other conferences play as many non conference games as the sec.
If this is imminent Sacramento State needs to sign some type of 2-year contract with C-USA because the current landscape out west is not suitable. For that an NAU or any other western FCS football program needs to join in addition.
Mountain West might not want sac state now, but if unlv decides to ignore their previous agreements and moves to another conference, I bet they look more attractive.
$2.5million is a drop in the stadium bucket.
Could PAC 12 or MWC have Sacramento St. play a full conference schedule to fill out their schedule without actually being in the conference.
It could be a stopgap measure for PAC 12 scheduling (after they get their 8th full member) to have a 9th or 10th team. It looks like PAC 12 needs more time (beyond 2026) to add 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th member.
It seems like a risky bet for Sacramento St. But maybe leads to MWC sometime after 2026.
Yes. We talked about this on a previous pod. Some sort of scheduling agreement.
JY has also posted about it on X.
@ can a team play most of it’s games against FBS opponents and still be in FCS?
Off topic. Seeing as you guys cover big10 news, any chance you guys covering the Michigan cheating scandal?
We talked about it at the beginning of our live show last week.
Steve gave some thoughts.
You can get that on our YT Page.
When the WAC added all those FCS football teams, their long term goal was to use their status as a former FBS conference and move all schools up to FBS. obviously that never happened for whatever reason.
Could they try that idea again? The wac needs to do something bold, or else they will no longer be a conference, various conferences will poach their remaining members.

No that ship sailed a long time ago. They had like a two year window after they stopped sponsoring FBS football to recruit members to remain an FBS conference. That didn't happen so they lost the ability to call themselves FBS. Just because they used to be FBS means nothing. See the Big East and Big West....
STEVE
Oh they’re asking students to pay for the fbs move? Oh this is not going to go well
Is the Big Sky gonna let them stay in for other sports? They've made it pretty clear in the past they want schools with football.
If FBS Independent for football comes about the Big West would be the logical host for the other sports. Currently sports are spread over 5 conferences. 15 sports are in the Big Sky Conference, Men's Soccer, Men's Golf and Beach Volleyball are in the Big West. Baseball all is in the WAC, Women's Gymnastics are in the Mountain West and Women's Rowing is in the West Coast Conference. It would be beneficial to have as many of our sports as possible in the same conference Dr. Wood has even mentioned that. In my opinion The Big West being a California based conference would create more fan interest than the Big Sky. Many more connections with the other California Universities in the Sacramento area than the remote Big Sky Conference schools.
Doubt it.
@@GreenLaser916-r6eexcept for a couple things. The Big West doesn't benefit at all by adding Sac State. Basketball is one of the worst programs nationally, poor facilities, the UCs might not want to let in another school with football - hence the chatter about Utah Valley or Cal Baptist.
Likewise, Sac State just gets lost in the sea of Cal State's if they tried to go to the Big West. They'd lose their identity and their motivation. It'd be a bad match.
Why sac state waste money new stadium odd make big conferences long shot look Sonoma state in Bay Area division 2 cut all 11 sports and school 24 million dollars cut staff & classes
Two different situations. Sonoma St. has a declining enrollment. Sacramento has no such issue.
SAC St all time record is still under .500. lol They trying to embarrass themselves like the Kings.
They've likely stretched their enrollment and endowment growth. This may likely be their only other option to build the school up and compete against the rest of the California-based schools and gain a more national presence/identity before the national enrollment decline takes full effect.
Better figure out what conference you are moving your non football programs to. Sac state basketball sucks, why would the big sky let them stay? Big west and WCC sure as hell doesn’t need them either. PAC is not taking them in a million years and neither is the MW. There’s nobody else left!
If the Big Sky doesn't let Sac State hoops stay, the league would be almost completely shut out of California, save for two football affiliates. Sac State is currently the only full member in-state in the league.
@ the value of sac state basketball without football is not even six figures who cares lmao
Just saw something yesterday mountain West pac-12 merger possible still
It's only possible with an unequal revenue sharing agreement.
they dont got the money
