    In terms of desserts, there is a saying in the Philippines, "Rice is Life" mainly because we eat everything with rice, also the reason why most of the food is flavorful. We love rice so much, it is reflected even in our desserts. A lot of true Filipino desserts are made from glutinous rice. Keep an eye for Sapin-Sapin, Ginataang Bilo Bilo, Biko, Carioca, Puto, Kutsinta, Suman, Pichi-Pichi, Puto Bumbong, Bibingka, and many more. And those are just the desserts made from rice. There are a lot more non-rice desserts to explore.

    The tofu drink you were tryna find is called “Taho”. When u find it on the streets, it’s typically the original warm variant. But at times, you’ll find “Chilled Taho” in malls or in restos probably cos they have longer shelf life than those on the streets. For halo halo, u can go to Max’s, Kuya J, Razon’s or even Mang Inasal. Or just go on a buffet like the spiral buffet at sofitel to have a wide variety of selections for food as well.

    • @FloraandNote

    The best china town food tour this year, very well presented.. Also always remember guys when in the Philippines the best condiments is soy sauce and calamansi, that's why there's a chili oil on your table its the final touch for making spicy toyomansi.. Just ask the server for calamansi.. Also appreciate Note being honest about his perception towards Filipino foods, Filipinos love their adobos, lechon and sisig so much that they forgot their other dishes 😂. Glad you like the avocado shake, actually there's another simple way to prepare the avocado dessert it actually trended on tiktok recently 🤭🤭🤭
    PS My first time to see a Filipino Chinese to be that so friendly.. Wow 🤭

    Lol the crossing the street part was funny. This is a good tour. I wished you had gone to more restaurants but I guess you ran out of time. There's a cafe there called Grand 1919 where you could have had dessert but it's a bit outside the Chinatown arc that's why you didn't see it. But then you'd have to do the death walk trap again haha.

    • @FloraandNote
      @FloraandNote  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much! Aww we were disappointed we couldn't find a dessert place. We did ask around and two locals told us to go to Starbucks for cake... 🙄 not exactly what we were looking for haha. But I did enjoy the Portuguese egg tart 😜

    Filipinos also love our dipping sauces, we either use a spiced vinegar or a mixture of soy sauce, crushed chilies and calamansi extract which is a small citrus fruit. If you don’t know how to make the dipping sauces, just ask the servers how to make it.
    If you ever try Kare-Kare don't forget to use the shrimp paste/bagoong that comes with it, they usually serve it on a soy dish... it's quite salty so be careful with the amount.

  • @polgonzales
    @polgonzales ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You need to ask the restaurant to show you the proper dipping sauce concoctions. Usually involves calamansi (citrus agent), soy sauce (toyo) or fish sauce (patis), and spicy agent.
    Makes a huge difference. Kare-kare goes with a shrimp paste if you encounter it in your adventures. 😊 enjoy

    It seems that you are enjoying the Philippines, and that discovering the food culture! It is not as well known compared to our Asian neighbours, but I’m really happy that you even said that you didn’t know what to expect.
    A few pointers:
    1. Street food in the Philippines is not like Thailand where it’s pretty much all good; it’s hit or miss! I would also try some mid-level or upscale restaurants!
    2. If you want to get a real taste of what we eat, home cooking is the best - if you make some local friends, sometimes they’ll invite you to a home dinner!
    3. Lots of fried chicken, eh? When we eat out, we eat “fiesta” food, which is meat heavy. Try to order some of these vegetable dishes:
    - Ginataang Sitaw at Kalabasa
    - Adobong Langka
    - Adobong Kangkong
    - Lumpiang Sariwa
    - Lumpiang Hubad
    - Pinakbet
    - Laing
    - Ensaladang Talong
    Also, lots of times, vegetables figure prominently in soups like sinigang, bulalo, and tinola.
    I hope this helps!! Happy eating!

    Pansit should have a Calamansi or Filipino lime or lemon squeeze to balance the saltiness. Eng Bee Ten is the famous snack or dessert from Chinatown. It's hopia and they have flavored ones too.
