First Snow - The Winter season is coming quick

  • We got a glimpse of the upcoming winter this week. While it was beautiful, I am glad it was only for a couple days. There are still a lot of tasks on our to-do list before the snow is here to stay.
As the next couple weeks may be, it is time to do all the various small projects needed to be done before winter. We filled our water tank, installed some loft lighting, and picked up a very necessary snow machine.

You two have come so far in just one summer! I am impressed. Cody, you are no dummy young man! You have learned so many skills. I am curious as to ask are you going to put a covering on the walls and roof on the inside? If you do, that will be an awesome winter project. I hope you both can get to a point soon that you can take a breather and enjoy some rest and relaxation, for a week or two and just sit and ponder and realize just how far you have both come. Cody i know you have been working none stop and probably think if this is how its going to be in Alaska forget it, but you will have time to enjoy the beauty! I can start to picture as you and Lori get the house in order, of being able to sit and watch the beaty of the snow falling while cozy warm in you cabin. Also i know you two are filled with energy and this spring will be out there cleaning up all around your property, and planting grass, and your place becomes all you have dreamed of, and your sitting looking at it all. This next summer you will get to enjoy the fishing, net fishing , hiking, ect. So dont get discourage now your dream is coming true! Great video. Lori maybe take some videos of the snow and then put it at the beginging and end of your videos. You two have the opportunity to become big on youtube, bringing in alot of funds to help you accomplish all you have and are dreaming of. Looking forward to your next video.

Been there, done that with the chainsaw getting stuck. I always had an extra blade and chain in the garage, so with the stuck saw I would just take off the blade, put the extra one on the saw and finish cutting down the tree. I lived in Alaska for 51 years, finally figured that was enough, and moved to Tennessee. No snow, no freezing pipes, no need for studded tires. And it is a whole lot cheaper to live. I will always miss Alaska, lots of good memories, but I will never miss the mosquitoes or 30 below zero. No more constantly scrounging up firewood. Alaska is still a young man's game, so keep the faith, enjoy every day.

Bigger drill bit for running those wires so you do not damage the wires

  • @aday1637
    @aday1637 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

On your loft floor joists, if you cut a piece with the angle between your rafters and joists and screw it in to the rafter at each joist on both sides it will increase the overall strength and allow you to 'load' the loft with greater safety. It's a small winter-time project that will make your build much better. Also, if you run a piece of framing say 8 or 10 inches from the peak, side to side you can then use that as a chase for wiring without drilling holes everywhere and weakening the rafters. You can bring circuit wires down just where needed inside the cavity between rafters. Plus, too, this will allow a neater way to finish the interior walls with sheathing, rather than just going to the very peak.

FYI - 3 way switches don't have a dedicated up/on-down/off because the other switch that it connects to can turn the lights off or on with the first switch staying in the same position. Another good thing to note when you connect the wires in the panel box permanently is to remove the outer insulation just after the cable enters the box, leaving 1/2 - 3/4" on the inside. -Dusty

I’ve got a saw stuck in a tree before, it sucks. It was in Willow years ago when they had a wood cutting area up long lake road. Now I have a rope come a long made by Maasdam. The rope doesn’t wind up on it so you can put as long of a rope as you want on it. Lowe’s sells a Unitech 120v pump that will pump a lot faster. When it’s get colder you will will be glad you did. I used to get water from a creek at our remote cabin in the winter. I had a small gas pump that filled the tank fast, but trying to pump to the 2nd story took forever. The 120v pump solved that. Now when you put a nozzle on the hose it has good pressure for washing mud off vehicles.

Just a suggestion, but you need to clear out anything you want to access in your greenhouse. I'd suggest organizing the stuff you need from it onto your porch or under the cabin. It's important to get the plastic off the greenhouse or it will collapse under the weight of snow. Talkeetna/Trapper creek area usually gets 4-5ft of snow every winter minimum. I've seen well over 10ft on bad years. I think that area suggests 70 lbs per sqft for engineered snow load. That greenhouse isn't designed for that load and the best way to make it last is to take the poly off the frame every fall and then re-poly every spring. Otherwise that greenhouse will be a twisted pile of poles sometime in December.
I know, you are probably thinking you will just brush it off and keep the snow off of it. That's great until you are sleeping one night and it dumps 3ft of wet snow overnight.

Hopefully you have time to get your gear and supplies under cover, it will be hard to find once it's snow covered.

Great that things are coming together. You are doing great! With the frist sown fall, you need to spend sometime outside to get things picked-up. If you don't you will not see until spring.

another great little episode . That side by side ( 6x6 ) is a real god sent . I would like to think that you will put a $1,000 or so into your GMC 4x4 before it breaks down and cost you an arm and a leg for repairs .. Look forward to your next episode .

I would install a frost free hose bib on the house to fill your tank with. You only have to have another female end on your hose to attach. That ball valve will crack if it has water inside it during the winter

Nice you guys got lights before the weather gets bad! You could use your waste slab cuts from the mill to put in that mud pit and make it easier to get through.

use your sawdust for traction, or next time in town buy a couple bags of sand or gravel for weight n back of pickup and/or use when you get stuck.

Always drain the gas from your chainsaw when done and run until totally dry of gas. This will save you a lot on maintenance and trouble with your chainsaws.

Why did you put the electrical box so tight to the wall. When you put your cover on, it is going to be very difficult to put the cover on, since you still havent even allowed for the sheetrock to go on.?

IMO, figure out how much firewood you need, and double it. It looks to me that you both are going to be running that wood stove pretty much continuously. Your situation is still primitive as far as basics, and keeping warm is going to become essential. I rarely see below zero (F) here in Montana, but when gets 30 below it can be a struggle that don't wish upon anybody.

@@irenekegel5988 So far they have had a means to adapt. Winter might and very possibly cut off those means. Throwing themselves upon the mercy of neighbors might seem an option, but to repeatedly do so will wear thin, very fast. Self reliance in Alaska is essential and wood, food, water, etc. is nothing to trivialize.
