    Really enjoyed the flight my friend and I'm glad you like gliders as I love them very much, also IMHO gliding is the most enjoyable aspect of our hobby (suits my old age best!! 👀) although the umx type of planes also some of my favourites as well, looking forward to seeing the next episode of this cool looking sport glider, thanks for sharing and best wishes from Alan in the UK 🤗🤗👍👍👏👏.

      Thank you much Alan! I never really considered a sport glider before but this plane has definitely changed my mind. It has so much power, speed, and is very aerobatic. Just the kind of plane I love to fly. The Gliding is very nice as well and it can Glide forever ;-) I'm loving this plane. See you in the Air!

      Hey Robby! I was surprised at the amount of power and speed. With the 3S 2200mah 25C LIPO I use it weighs 1.06kg. It flies like it's much lighter ;-)

      This is definitely the highest performance PNF Plane I've flown.
      I absolutely love it!
      Amazing how much more stable and easier to fly the larger planes are. This is the largest Wingspan Plane I've flown and it feels like it has a stabilizer. I just have a standard 7CH Receiver in this.

    TH-cam Video Processing messed up a small portion of this Video and I did not have enough time to upload the Video again.
    They probably would have created the same error again anyway ;-)
    At Timecode 13:27 the Video appears to have stopped, the same Frame is repeated without audio until Timecode 14:18 and then the Video resumes correctly.
    I don't know how TH-cam continually manages to break things as the last Video I uploaded was created at 1080p/60fps and was processed to 1080p/50fps.
    The Video was created in NTSC format so I don't know why they processed it as PAL format.
    TH-cam Bugs continue to multiply and rarely get fixed.
    Hopefully, the next Video I upload will be processed correctly ;-)

    Oh wow.. I'm delighted to see you review this.. very nice! Its my kind of plane and very similar to the Conscendo Evo but... arguably better designed, built and specced in some ways.
    Did you get this instead of the CE? If not I can't wait to hear your thoughts on all the differences and which you prefer.

    • @GroundControlRC
      @GroundControlRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul! My 1st ever large Sport Glider ;-) I'm very impressed with it. I was sent this for review and I have the CE. I think some practice on this one before putting the CE in the air ;-) They both arrived on the same day! When it rains it pours ;) This one has no gyro so if I can fly this one competently I shouldn't have any problem with the CE. I can't wait to get it ready to go. I never thought I'd end up with (2) fantastic Sport Gliders ;-) Thank you again!

    • @paulhope3401
      @paulhope3401 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GroundControlRC Awesome.. this looks even more slippery and the energy retention even higher than the CE, you should probably try minimum throttle on the first third to half of your landing approaches as it should help slow it down a little.
      I've made an rather expensive investment in DJI's digital fpv system.. should arrive today. My plan is to make a pan and tilt casing for the module and cam that I can simply attach to my larger models and be able to look around during my flights thanks to my goggle mounted Quanum headtracker... Will take something to setup but should be pretty immense once dialled in.
      Did you know you can also turn this into a 2.1m glider with a wing extension piece for two different flavour planes in one?
      Looking forward to watching your next flight on the Lightning V2. 😀

    • @GroundControlRC
      @GroundControlRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulhope3401 Thank you much Paul! It is a very cool Sport Glider ;-) I absolutely love it! They do have carbon reinforcement in the areas you spoke of for the CE.
      The DJI System with Pan and Tilt would be some amazing video from one of these Sport Gliders. I'd love to see some footage.
      I did not know they had wing extensions to make it a 2.1m Wingspan. I'll have to check that out.
      I'll also try keeping the motor at minimum power to see if that will slow it down a bit on landing as it wants to glide forever ;-)
      See you in the Air!

    GC:
    Wonderful review! Questions:
    1) What did you use for the belly plate you added?
    2) Looks to me like those little variable dihedral wing tips helps for side to side stability and helps to avoid tip stalls on slow turns. You agree?
    3) Did I see a belly wheel?
    4) I'm thinking this plane should be awsome for thermal and slope flying. Do you have a site where you can test this?
    5) Please give us some assessment whether some form of stability control is desireable or if it is so well designed that it doesn't need it. This plane reminds me a bit of the Parkzone Radian Pro, but with just touch of dihedral for stability.
    6) Do you have any plans for FPV on this plane? How would you mount it? Using a canopy platform? Tail mount?
    7) I'm very curious how you find your performance when you begin using the rudder.
    8) Do you think flaps are desirable?
    9) Please give us your run time with your choice of battery, after you get some familiarity with flight characteristics. What is the long range potential of the Lightning?
    10) Have you considered some sort of Li Ion battery pack arrangement? If you try this, please give us your specifics.
    11) Have you experimented with the Express LRS protocol Tx/Rx from Happymodel yet? Seems like the light weight Rx, long range & low latency of this system would be an excellent choice for this great plane. Your thoughts?
    Keep your stuff coming. I'm loving it! - Jim

    • @GroundControlRC
      @GroundControlRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you much James!
      It came with a Plastic Belly Plate.
      Yes, I think the Wing Tips are definitely designed to prevent Tip Stalls.
      No Wheel, I added a Front Skid, it was made from dense foam, a couple of sections of Bamboo Skewer to use as Pins, and a section of heavy duty Zip Tie. I'm surprised it worked ;-) It really needs a Wheel though. I'll fabricate a Wheel Plate on down the road from some aluminum perhaps.
      This is the 1st time I've flown this type of Plane and I just have Intermediate Level Skill. This Plane is very stable. I just used a standard 7CH Receiver, No Flight Controller, No Gyro, No Stabilization, and it seemed Rock Solid to me. I don't feel It needs it.
      No plans for FPV. I may mount a recording camera sometime. I would mount an FPV or Recording Camera on top of the Wing at the CG.
      Yes, I want to test out stall turns with the Rudder ;-)
      I was thinking of programming Flaperons but I don't think it needs it. As long as you bleed off enough speed before landing you can land fairly slowly.
      Flight Time: I used a 3S 2200mah 25C LIPO, I had it in the air for 7min 3sec. I had 3.8v per cell when I landed. Continuing to fly the way I was flying, heavy in the throttle and then glide, I should get 12min flights leaving 3.5v per cell.
      I haven't considered Li-Ion packs.
      I haven't experimented with any Long Range equipment or Protocols. I like to fly Fast, Aerobatic, close Proximity with my Aircraft as that's what I have fun doing but these Sport Gliders would certainly make good Long Range Aircraft as well.
      Thank you for the kind words Jim as it is much appreciated ;-)
      See you in the Air!

      James C Eastep - In reply to your No 11 question, ELRS is a superb value Open source Long Range protocol that appears to even improve on Crossfire for both Range and latency. I had plans to mod my R9 system to ELRS with a flight controller and INAV until I learned it is only 4 channel and the 4th channel has reduced resolution which makes it useless for a lot of fixed wing setups other than simple Elevons. No capability for pan and tilt headtracking makes it a non starter for me unfortunately. Such a shame, hopefully they will bring out a version with more channels.

      They actually did reply to my email in less then 24hrs. Unfortunately, I think things get lost in translation as they thought I was referring to the Control Linkage not the Control Surface Deflection so the information wasn't useful. Luckily, I did get the Control Surface movement nearly spot on for the Maiden Flight ;-) I'm very impressed that they actually responded and responded so quickly as I've contacted a lot of vendors and manufacturers that have never responded. That seems to be the rule rather than the exception. So, I'm not only very impressed with their plane but also their support ;-) They seem to be a very good company.

      I emailed toprc for deflection numbers. They knew what I was asking and said they would ask their 'engineer' multiple times and then never responded back..lame. I ended up using eflites Crescendo numbers. Honestly, this plane kinda sucks to fly, a fiberglass/carbon quality molded sailplane is easier, more precise and locked in than this flimsy foam thing.

      @@unknowninvictus2520 yea, i dont really like mine, only used it as a trainer and prototype landing pad testing in preparation for my fiberglass/carbon hotliners.
      Couldnt wait to move on and after the first flight with my molded hotliner, I never touched the foam junk thing again after that. It seems like its a good price for what you get, but now after owning one, its actually overpriced imo.
      After only 10 flights before I moved on, my lightning has dents and dings all over and looks terrible whereas my fiberglass planes have hundreds of flights and still look really good.
      Funny thing is, finding a suitable flying site with nice flat ground proved to be the hardest thing about these planes, lol.
