It likely was what you insinuated in your video of ice on the switch. I've seen several videos where the switches were on fire 🔥 in excessive cold. Nice narration and video. Good work.
I had a loaded scrap gondola derail at a switch several years ago. It turned out it was overloaded and the truck wouldn't move properly on the kingpin. It was in effect ridgid and the truck climbed up on the switch frog.
I went to West Chicago last night seeing the CN GTW SD70M2 unit and a 100 CN unit and saw a few parts from the derailment too I was lucky enough to get pics of the parts I was able to
Lucky!!!!! who cares about the piece of metal....how about the residents of westchicago....we fought this EJ&E/CN merger....we have atleast 2 grandmall derailments a year here alone on this sub.
I went this afternoon to check it out and they were still cleaning it up. I made it after the metra tracks were clear and saw the remaining freight cars and locomotives, including 3023.
WHOA!!!! I had no idea that #3023 even existed......i CLEARLY need to build that and add that to my HO scale EJ&E roster!!!!! I need more info on THAT loco....Good Video Sam!
Saw that Heritage unit on a southbound train passing through Stevens Point about a week ago. It was going over the wisconsin river bridge (mile marker 249.75). I was cross country skiing on the frozen part of the river and saw it crossing. Should have taken a picture. Have seen it and other heritage units up here several times. I live near the depot (mile 249.0) and see and hear lots of trains.
Hey Sam, Kudos!!! Great video. Could we get some more info on the accompanying incidents? I would rather watch your videos than the evening news. Thank you!!!!!!!!
Thanks! I don’t have much information about the Cicero accident, but here’s some more information about the Normal derailment. trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2021/02/13-digest-cp-train-derails-on-crowsnest-pass-sending-some-cars-into-lake
Wouldn't you know it? LMAO! I live in Cicero and THAT ONE was the one I was most interested in. I still would rather watch your coverage than any network talking-head!! Keep up the great work, Sam!!
Great video Sam! I like the drone footage. So this is the reason why I heard the reports on WGN Radio this morning about problems with the Metra West Line commuter service. I heard the reports of having to use shuttle buses between Geneva and West Chicago, Illinois. I though that maybe the Union Pacific had put some cars on the ground between those to towns that caused the Metra West Line commuter service interruption. I do not remember hearing anything about the Canadian National being the cause of the problem. Did Canadian National end up bringing some engines up the line from Joliet to pull their train south of the Union Pacific mainline so that traffic on the Union Pacific could flow while Canadian National cleaned up the derailment? Thank you for running out to West Chicago from the northern Chicago suburbs to film this video and for sharing it with us!
Just West of where the Big Boy was displayed. The video calls it the Leithton Sub. First I heard this. Leithton is in Mundelein. Guess we know why CN bought the J!
Not even around half a year and already CN has one in an accident. Luckily 3023 probably sustains minor knuckle or drawbar damage for the coupler. That's gonna be some high dollar stuff tho from the cars that derailed badly.
Wow thats one of my favorite spot where I go with my son to railfan..sad to see that happen but luckily no one was hurt.. I guess that propane tank was empty.
There must be a derailment every single day somewhere. Given the shocking state of some of the cars you see, those gondolas in particular, I can't say I'm altogether surprised.
Fun Fact: I was the first one to call it was 3023. Had a friend trace it to Eola at 7:39 AM. At 8:02 AM, I was informed by this friend of the derailment, and immediately realized, based completely off of timing, that this was the train 3023 was on. Anyways, great video Sam. If I may ask, how do you get out so often to catch the rarest stuff?
I hope the Chicago news media takes notice of your professionalism and calls upon you to be a consultant whenever they have a train question. I hate when they get it wrong!
@Railfanning Points Wouldn't know, I'm not the CN crew working out there. Did anyone who actually knows anything say what happened or are we all just guessing?
Now they just need the giant hand to rerail the cars and presto trains are back running and get rid of that pesky switch and get Tony Koester in to handlay a #8 that will fix it!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
The official cause still hasn’t been released yet, but I will leave a comment here when I find out more information.
I bet Its Union Pacific Again
It likely was what you insinuated in your video of ice on the switch. I've seen several videos where the switches were on fire 🔥 in excessive cold.
Nice narration and video. Good work.
Hey Sam, nice video! Great to see you getting into narrating. Keep up the solid work! -Drayton
Thank you!
One Train lover to another Train Lover Great Content
Happy to hear nobody was injured, and to be honest very relieved 3023 was fine as well 🤣 Nice coverage Sam!

Whoa! interesting, Those scrap gons get a lot of abuse.
@@8HumblePie wondering if that's what happened here.
Outstanding coverage 👍
Thanks!
Great video. I'm glad that no one was hurt. Great job narrating. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!

I see Trains magazine picked up some of your pictures. Congrats!
Yes! Thanks!
I live near Normal il and I enjoyed this video. It is short and to the point and provides information that I did not hvae. thank you
Great Job on the Video @SamLovesTrains. Rather than going to the News for Train Derailment News I will just subscribe to your Channel !
Well, after seeing this. That CN Heritage unit was LUCKY he didn't derail.
Lucky!!!!! who cares about the piece of metal....how about the residents of westchicago....we fought this EJ&E/CN merger....we have atleast 2 grandmall derailments a year here alone on this sub.
Wow and to think it just happened to have a Heritage on the train is very rare.
I went this afternoon to check it out and they were still cleaning it up. I made it after the metra tracks were clear and saw the remaining freight cars and locomotives, including 3023.
That gondola did an excellent job of going between those two utility poles!
Nice narration and content coverage. Keep up the good work.
The CN EJ&E heritage unit was travelling on original EJ&E tracks.
Illinois has had a few mishaps lately!!great video man!!! Way better than the news guys!!!
Thanks!
Nice choice of pleasant, background music for a CN, freight train, derailment in West Chicago, IL! Thanks for sharing!

I can not believe this happened I am nuts right now glad the EJE unit is ok Thanks for sharing Sam
Good coverage Sam, thanks for sharing
Nice footage young man
Thank you
Wow! Very impressive photography and drone footage. Bravo! - Boomer.
Thanks!
Excellent video. Just subscribed!
Excellent coverage. Used to work JSW3 and turned at West Chicago nightly except Saturday. Hopefully no orange paint was scuffed!
heard it was a bad wheel bearing that caused it
I agree with Todd! Better than the news media!
I live in Normal, IL, where the first derailment happened. It’s kinda scary to see that there’s a chain of railroad accidents in Illinois.
Agreed. There’s been 3 days in a row where there’s been a accident. Hopefully that won’t continue.
Could be weather related: broken rails, iced up switches, etc.
Elgin Joliet & Eastern Heritage Unit’s first derailment.
Great video and drone work. Subbed.
Thanks!

Love your videos Sam

I live not too far away from West Chicago, so it was a shock when i heard there was a derailment.
You blew this video out of the water sam! Yeah things have been crazy already D:
Derailment on Northfolk line on the southeast side a few days ago

Thank you! Soon after I left they brought an engine up and pulled the rest of the train across the diamond.
Thanks for the info !!! 👍
THank you for your drama free reporting!
I'm baffled by the wide cab unit in J colors
Great catch and great areal shot...
Definitely glad nobody was hurt. Also glad the EJE heritage unit survived.
Outstanding video
Thank you!
Thanks!

2:42 I've never seen wheel axle assemblies get destroyed like that
That's a nasty one. A Heritage Unit involved as well, that's a keeper.
Not even around half a year and already CN has one in an accident. Luckily 3023 probably sustains minor knuckle or drawbar damage for the coupler. That's gonna be some high dollar stuff tho from the cars that derailed badly.

Thanks for footage I like that. If you had a drone, that footage would be nice to. THANKS for sharing this with me.✌️👍
thx Sam 👍
imagine if that 2nd motor went on the ground. Oh I can hear the foamers LMAO
Nice catch! I wish I could’ve seen the aftermath
Thanks! It was very cool to see!
There must be a derailment every single day somewhere. Given the shocking state of some of the cars you see, those gondolas in particular, I can't say I'm altogether surprised.
Phew that was a close one
Either ice in the switch or a broken frog
EJ andE I haven't heard the name in many years.
Fun Fact: I was the first one to call it was 3023. Had a friend trace it to Eola at 7:39 AM. At 8:02 AM, I was informed by this friend of the derailment, and immediately realized, based completely off of timing, that this was the train 3023 was on.

Interesting. Thanks! Very nice parents haha
Wow bro that is being at the right place at the right time.
Good reporting!
Thanks!
That's a bad wreck its blocking metra cn and up, cool video!
I hope the Chicago news media takes notice of your professionalism and calls upon you to be a consultant whenever they have a train question. I hate when they get it wrong!
I was looking at heritageunit.com and i realized the cars weren’t on the rails
I see EJ&E Heritage Unit.
I'm glad that cn 3023 is good!
Bad weather in February 🚂🚃🚃🚃☹
Isn’t that the CN Heritage unit in the thumbnail?
Yes
nice job, dude!
Thanks!
Good thing no one hurt.
the cars from the bridge scrape are laid up by my house. still full of merchandise
Not even what 3 months in and we all ready have a crash this is why we can’t have any thing nice
1:02 I saw Union Pacific.
I was there just 10 minutes 👀 before this derailment and saw what appeared 👁️ to be 3 male Sasquatches tinkering with the equipment.🥶
How in the world do they ever put cars back on the track after a derailment?
they don't , they just tell the crack heads and bam all scrapped out in no time , and the crack heads be all stoned lol
Crane
Hulcher Services Inc.
One word for y’all Cranemasters
News: focused on the train derailment
Me: focused on CN 3023
That's why they need switch heaters. Would have saved them from this happening.
There are switch heaters already in service.
@Railfanning Points Wouldn't know, I'm not the CN crew working out there. Did anyone who actually knows anything say what happened or are we all just guessing?
@@SantaFebuff
they’re all just foaming....
@@SantaFebuff Maybe some working heaters would be nice.
Oh wow I am so glad i forgot about it
Lucky the trains didn’t derailed expect the cars
Imagine the foamers who got mad because the train derailed and they were about to catch a heritage unit.
3065 and 3023 are lucky. Thank the lord everyone is okay.
4 of my packages never made it. Now I know what happened to them
Lol!
yeah somebody didnt get their porn mags either lol
I'm suspecting snow is to Blame.
Snow and the extreme temperatures we’ve been getting lately.
Only like 7.cars derailed not that bad that nobody got hurt either
Why the CN didn't pull the cars not affected so to clear the UP shortly after? No excuse except for general incompetency, and stupidity.
WTF CN!!! How dare CN almost derail one of there HU’s?! Yes I know its not CN’s fault.
This video was off the rails.
Wow if almost there was a invention to keep this from happening. Maybe something to keep the switch warm so ice doesn't build up 🤔
Hmm.. I couldn't imagine that being a thing, who would invent that am I right.
We should ban ice on the rails. Lol.
Now they just need the giant hand
to rerail the cars and presto trains
are back running and get rid of
that pesky switch and get Tony
Koester in to handlay a #8 that
will fix it!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
At Least Elgin Joliet And Eastern Heritage Unit Is Alright
Train crash again oh great it’s gonna take some time to get cleaned up
cool
I had a dream that there had been an accident there!
I definitely train derailment is bad but as long as nobody’s hurt Definitely.
Why wouldn’t you like this? Just skip it or turn it off, dummy!
Sssshit
