I used to watch the Last Night of the Proms every year; here aged twenty three. The celebrated doyen of BBC News, Richard Baker, hosting the occasion, narrated the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Peter and the Wolf. Like the mens' white dinner jackets - sartorial elegance of yesteryear!
I haven’t seen this recording for nearly 30 years and couldn’t understand why he wasn’t invited back but, listening to his speech, I now know why. It’s a good job the then management of the BBC aren’t around today because the criticism metered out today is far worse than he gave.

I thought this Proms was worth sharing. I usually switch of when speeches start. Obviously the BBC did no appreciate even a hint of criticism.
Barry Wordsworth is my favourite conductor although I suspect he wasn’t at ease doing the party bit of Last Night of the Proms?
And listen to God Save the Queen
What a rowdy bunch this audience is!
